I think Sugar Bytes apps have the most innovative and interesting UIs. Love them or hate them, they’re not boring. My favourite is Egoist. The UI makes an already interesting and engaging app even more so.
isymphonic
voice synth
beatonal
Nave
Infinite Looper
... these are very good apps that suffer from poor design choices (imo, of course)
I know that audio.midi features are the most important but I found that I'm not buying apps with poor graphics - as someone said - workflow is a key to great results. Of course I have to look carefully because I could miss some great opportunities. In fact on the desktop I'm moving rather to colourful Reason than mathematical Ableton Live
yeah, I can put up with ugly design (and do) but confounding UI is where I delete. There are some great apps that just have poor UI. Synthmaster One, Volt, Phosphor 2 to name a few. mainly fidgety controls that are poorly placed and poorly labeled (or just damned tiny)
to each their own.. I'd much prefer they be boring than as garish as they are. egois is probably the least offensive but I still find it cringy. reminds me of distressed jeans from the mall. things like this rarely age well.
Does no one else find VirSyn apps really drab and depressing to look at? Their colour scheme brings up a rising gloop of apathy in me.
Don’t get me started on their XY pyramid things...
Yes hate them. Just like their synths themselves, the UIs seem to have an uncanny valley effect to them
☝🏼This! It’s the USER-ABILITY factor that matters most, which a poor ui can just kill.
Cubasis.
Any app from Jordan Rudess. His sense of visual style is total crap. We get it. You’re a wizard.
Jordan is not the "developer" - he is a keyboardist.
Cubasis?? Did you post this in the wrong thread - instead of the thread below?:
https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/29866/what-are-the-best-looking-and-visually-appealing-apps
Wisdom Music develops Jordan Rudess’ apps. Jordan owns Wizdom Music. Jordan Rudess develops shitty looking apps.
Both the layout and the colors of Cubasis are horrible.
I find Cubasis’ layout very intuitive. In fact, it’s a thousand times more intuitive than Auria Pro and BM3. As for the colours; grey and blue are my two favourites and each channel can be assigned one of sixteen colours.
I agree with the Wizdom/Jordan Rudess apps, though.
Yes, we all know that but Jordan is "not" the developer writing the code or designing the UI. It is his developer/s.
That is harsh - haven't you ever seen any of the polls of which is the best DAW app? Cubasis wins each and every poll as the top DAW! You probably haven't seen FLSM - maybe you would like it. Is this a troll comment?
I think there is no point in arguing with this poster bashing Cubasis. Not worth our time. How can dozens of polls and thousands of users be wrong and this user be right?? He is talking like a UI designer. What qualifies him to make those silly statements?
Wow. It’s his opinion. No need to be threatened by it. What relevance do polls have to someone who just doesn’t like something?
Maybe you should take a walk or something. (Sorry, beautiful day here. Ymmv.)

It's not an opinion when someone is bashing the top-rated app as the worst - it is a clear contradiction. People would get offended if someone is bashing BM3 or NS2 too.
No one is getting threatened here
OK I don’t want to get in an argument here. But that’s a silly statement. Of course it’s an opinion. Are those polls unanimous?? If not, then there are contrary opinions. And that’s fine (or should be at least).
Feel free to have the last word. I won’t respond, but it doesn’t mean I haven’t listened and considered your opinion. :peace 🙏
The dark ui with dark text theme in so many apps is just bad in general. Looks great in a dark room whilst coding but unusable with any amount of sunlight or screen reflection.
First, top rated in this forum. The best seller DAW app is still Auria Pro (according to App Annie and other marketing tools), which by the way could improve a lot in the U.I. realm, as many of its users already know.
Second, what makes it okay to “bash” (SIC) certain apps while others are above criticism? Is it okay to “bash” (SIC) BM3, but not Cubasis? Why? Isn’t this a criticsm thread? People throwing temper tantrums every time they read something they don’t agree is the main reason the Internet is becoming a boring place. This forum is one exception - let’s keep it that way.
Third - Nelson Rodrigues, a famous Brazilian playwright, has a famous quote, that I freely translate: “Any unanimity is stupid”. Cheers!
Mentioned above but Virsyn apps are not appealing visually. Drab, boring and I would agree, sort of depressing. I wonder if that’s why I don’t turn to them often.
I love their sound though.
It’s always nice to hear other people’s opinions and have a discussion about it, but this particular issue is so subjective it’s pointless arguing with people that have a different view. It would be like arguing over which colour paint would be best for my downstairs loo; it doesn’t matter what everyone else thinks.
Well yeh, but instead of arguing, it’s interesting to hear why people think things. For instance, I was curious about what you dislike Cubasis’ UI. However, like you, I do my best to stay out of topics like this one. Or any other topics asking “which is the best ...” and the like.
(Failed this time obviously.
)
I was the one who liked the Cubasis UI.
Oops. Sry.
I'm actually with you in not finding Cubasis visually appealing. To my taste, something looks off with the proportions between shapes and fonts. I don't find it so bad that I wouldn't use the app, and I'm guessing the layout allows for quite effective navigation based on the sheer amount of satisfied users. (So "horrible" is a little harsh.) But looking back it must have played a role in keeping me from pulling the trigger on buying the app, so I'm most of the way with you.
@MobileMusic I find your reaction to Sonicflux' comments offensive. The thread calls for personal opinions on the visual appeal of apps. Whenever people share their personal opinions on what is visually appealing there will be disagreements. It's a wonderful privilege to have the freedom of expression to express personal opinions. At least when discussing matters of taste, we can't enjoy that privilege without respecting each other's opinions.
I find your reaction offensive. This thread calls for personal opinions on the visual appeal of apps. That is obviously a matter of taste. There will always be disagreement when discussing matters of taste, including with the opinions of the majority. It's a wonderful privilege to have the freedom to discuss our opinions about matters of taste with each other. But there is no civilized way to do that without respecting each others' opinions, including when people disagree with the majority.
I like the look of Cubasis and its UI. Easy to see what's what. Big, bold, colorful and with good contrast. It appeals to me more than Auria Pro, and I tend to go to Cubasis if it can handle what I'm doing.
I'm being totally objective here, so please don't contradict me with your opinions.

I'm with you in finding Cubasis visually unappealing: there is something that looks off to me in the proportions between the different shapes and fonts. To me it's not so bad that I wouldn't use it. But looking back, I'm pretty sure the fact that I don't like how it looks is part of why I still haven't bought Cubasis.
That said, I suspect the layout makes for very effective navigation once people are used to it - on this point, I do think the popularity of the app is worth taking into account.
Yeah it doesn't hurt my eyes like some of the apps in this thread but I don't find Cubasis very nice to look at. It has a very dated and cluttered look, there are some nice colors but they look added in as an after thought with little relation to the overall design.
I suspect much that ugliness pays off in usability for people familiar with the app so they have more reason to accept it. For example the buttons are all over sized aesthetically which looks cheap but they are functional for easy pressing and clearly labeled in large type.
We've all seen the opposite problem with "cool" apps that are so cool you can barely read or interact with the tiny abstract interface.
I think with a well thought out overhaul they could streamline the interface considerably and maintain present functionality.
God forbid that anyone offend another's OPINION in an opinion thread.. sheesh.
If you're gonna be so thin skinned, maybe avoid such threads. but honestly these arguments are so absurd.
Am I not allowed to dislike clam chowder due to the fact that lots of people love it?
Arguments from "authority" (or even worse, from popularity (do you base your favorite music on the top 10 charts?)) on matters of taste.. truly a fool's errand.
