  • I've mentioned this before in another thread. My only problems with the app are its name and pricing.
It should have been called something like (Audio and Midi Controlled By Waves)
and if that's a mouthful (AMCW) and I agree with @FrankieJay said:

Me thinks £6.99 would have been its best price.

  • I find Different Drummer to be a useful app, you can use your own samples, use it to send midi to other apps or a midi file. It's a way of generating patterns that's different than other apps. Here's a video tutorial that shows how to use some of it's features. It also has a randomizer you can use to specify how random it should be and even have it return to a pattern.

It might be confusing for some people but if you're curious about it there are videos and other information about it on the web to give you ideas on what it's about.

  • It's actually loads better now, when I made the video it hadn't long been out, wow I remember that thread...when we all thought Flo was the dev in disguise, turned out Flo is a really cool guy who stuck around after the dust settled

  • And a couple of vids I did on it. Sorry for the echo on one.

  • Here's a manual for the next update 2.6 of the app if you really want to learn about using it.

  • What I would like to see is a Real Drums app, with good acoustic sounds, multiple velocity layers, control over direct and room mics, etc. Something like BFD or DFH. That simply does not exist on iOS. I would pay 50 or more for an app like that.

I'm very surprised that Toontrack doesn't have any iOS apps.

  • I'm really interested in this app for generating unique sound sequences but even at $20, it seems pricey. If it every drops to $10 or less, i'm all over it.

    .

  • Oh yeah, i'm aware of the original price. I had a hearty laugh at that one. I'm a bit spoiled by my apps i supposed but anything over $10 has to be INSANELY powerful and useful for me to pull the trigger. DD has me intrigued but can't justify $20 (let alone $320).

  • I doubt they sold many at that price...it was rather unrealistic I think, and apparently they've finally realized this themselves too now.

Prices should be compared to similar apps in scope and utility, and I guess they are still probing for their appropriate level.

  • Probably just had it that high so the price of $20 could seem like a 'bargain'

Lovely. Best thing I read on the Internet all day. Going to go do that now.

I would! But I wasn't. I got off the damn Internet after reading it and recorded a song.

Gotta give props where props is due. I own this app and while I dont use it all the time, it's very unique and the dev has been responsive compared to all the million other drum apps out there (all you really need is beatmaker imo) or maybe seekbeats for synthetic tweakable sounds. I've bought so many apps that promised this or that only to fin out it's buggy that when an app does deliver, I want to give them their respect. This app is one of them. There is no other app that can give you a tribal sound unless you just straight up sample a tribal drum sound from someone else? I've probably spent a few hundred bucks on apps I've just deleted. $20 is worth it if you want additional flavors for your beats. If you think it's too expensive, just get figure for free as that will give you all the generic 4 to the floor beats you need and stop complaining about the price. its a free market.

    Oh yeah merry xmas all

  • Total agreement gj.

I keep trying to create rhythms that aren't just generic 4/4, boom, boom, boom clones and have only succeeded with a lot of effort in iPolysix.

I've owned DD for less than a week and am totally amazed at the dynamic/subtle/musical variations I am making with very little effort. It is a superb instrument.

  • @Yan You're not the only one who is trying to avoid generic 4/4 beats. Some people may believe that all music is in 4/4, but they're wrong. iPolysix is not your only option. I knocked out this 11/8 groove in a couple of minutes on a well known drum app. It's just one pattern, I could have made variations and strung them together, as the app allows that.

  • That's certainly not generic! Fingers and feet tapping in different rhythms. The frontal lobe must participate, not just the reptilian brain.

    Which app, Paul?

  • DM1, just one of the stock kits with a couple of mix and pitch tweaks.

    Ta

  • Keep in mind with DD each voice is governed by 5 complex "waves" so you can have accents on 11 with a touch of 5, rests on 17, notes on 3 with a smidgeon of 747 and 44 (in v2.6), ties on 23 and panning on 8 and that's just for one voice! The traditional idea of "time signature" becomes moot in this system because the permutations are so vast that you would never be able to begin to hear them all by the time you pass away. How about π/4 time? Version 2.6 is coming next week and it's the best ever but something special is coming for version 3 this spring! The price is whatever your target market will pay. I target bold musicians and not frugal app shoppers (which I am too;-). On sale for 1 more day. BTW, DD does a lot more than drums since you can load up vocal samples, cellos whatever comes to mind and play them in over 70 musical scales. For regular drums you don't need much more than the Drummer in GarageBand but DM1 and DrumJam are excellent too. Cheers!

You also target anyone who simply enjoys complex, indefinable, rich, energy-filled rhythms, sequences and exciting sounds.

I will never use DD in any pro sense, but just being able to create a new world of sound makes this one of my top couple of apps - just for the fun of it.

I look forward to the updates and new version (any hints?)

  • "How about π/4 time? "

    FTW

  • Who says all drum "events" have to be triggered on exact integer beats? Accents can be placed on 3.1415 by setting the cycles per measure thusly but that doesn't mean it sounds good either...just saying when you have a pure mathematical system you're not stuck with the ordinary options so the possibilities are more vast. Yes, Yan...I target those that enjoy complex, indefinable, rich, energy-filled rhythms, sequences and exciting sounds for sure but I also target those that want killer funky grooves that you can dance to as well. I probably wouldn't do a major live show with DD (or even an iPad) but I think in the studio a pro could get a lot out of it. Cheers and thanks for your support!

  • Hey at least it created an interesting conversation about unique value vs market...I can say nobody bought it at its initial price which was my intention. I had to submit the app before I lost the name and only figured out later I could control the availability in a more intelligent way (live and learn, eh). My customers generally have never complained about the pricing, bless them!

  • C'mon Simon. It's great to be able to tell the wife that I saved her $300 by patiently waiting for the sales...

Thanks Tech for giving me all this kudos with her.
