Not a bad post. A little bit long and could possibly use an edit... but he's right. People get way too bent out of shape over stuff that in the big scheme of things, doesn't really matter much. I know I've been guilty of that too. So, well done. :)

Thanks for reading and totally agree with your critique that it could use an edit...or few.

  • Willie - you are near the top of my list of favorite posters. You’re a fantastic addition to this forum and this amazing post proves it.

Unfortunately a new religion is coming into fashion. It’s a cult where outrage is not only approved of, if you’re not outraged enough, the high priests of outrage will deem you a non-believer who must not care enough. It doesn’t matter what offends, only that it makes the sufferer feel outraged.

I’m older, and I’ve learned that being outraged can make me feel immediately good but it doesn’t really contribute to my situation in any way. It’s not the way to get things done, or to have a positive impact on the world. I’d much rather laugh, joke around even if it is at my expense.

Cheers - and please just keep being you!

Heh, yeah.. I'm not one to talk. Some of my earlier posts looks like mini-books. lol
Been trying to self-edit more and get to the point quicker.

Also, the fewer words I type, the less chance I might slip up and offend someone. ;)

  • WillieNegus please.

  • I thought your name was in Latin, so of course I was fucking pissed.

Yeah but it’s that last part that scares me man. We’re in this space where we want to say less scared to offend meaning we’re not really expressing ourselves fully. How fast did that happen?

Fast forward a few decades and maybe people don’t even speak or write anymore.😳

I thought you must have been distantly related to George - but I certainly didn't hold it against you.

Haha...I was wondering if you’d make your way here! You should just be proud I didn’t include any porn in that long ass soliloquy.😩

Yeah I miss me some porn Big Willie ;)

  • Just to add to your thoughts @WillieNegus

Although it may be correct that seemingly some are more easily offended these days, it’s also true that’s it’s become fashionable to belittle or enhance any offence someone may have as a ploy to silence any criticism of what a person says - almost as a way to silence ones freedom of speech while enhancing their own. In my opinion, it’s not what is being said in this world, but the sometimes arbitrary and selective rules that society forms around speech.

Turning the other check, passing by without comment, ignoring - all fine in many circumstances, but also problematic if nothing ever gets questioned. I think it’s great to question and discuss. Again it’s the problem that society enforces rules that do not protect freedom of speech, but protects societies rules that often are there to distract or protect certain elements from the masses ever having critical thinking.

Life simply isn’t fair all equal for all, so what is fair freedom of speech for one, may still be deep down the desire to belittle or even enslave others.

Just a few thoughts to add to your own dude - not criticism or contradictory examinations.

Keep ya Willie Big and Proud ;)

:D :D :D. I dunno if it was a coincidence or not but having the first name Hans and having the initials of your last name being J.B. and adding that extra S just for fun did the trick.

  • any attempt to end stupidity with conversation and education ranks high in my book @WillieNegus

If you make just one person think deeper about something, i consider it a win.

The OP too. I learned some things.
    👍👍

  • Hey @WillieNegus, I am pissed at you... You could get more hits on this than I got on the Black Friday sales thread. Upstart! 30k... Go for it!

  • I enjoyed reading that @WillieNegus. Educated me. ty

  • I think it's great when regular posters offer up a biographical context for themselves. @bedheadproducer's introduction to the Forum was a legendary post and it gives everything that follows a context.

Without context we create a persona for each other.

I recall noticing some WillieNegus comments recently and just didn't have a context. That can never happen again.

If fact, my understanding of afro-american society has been given a context I didn't have before reading this post.

That is a pretty fuckin' powerful use of language to give the reader a sense of the writer and his world in a single page.

I'd like to see a series of these from regulars so we can have context for our lives, the way we view music and it's place in society and what rhetorical skills we have (many use English as a second language here and have hurtles to self-expression here).

I look forward to going back and re-reading @willienegus comments armed with a new perspective and a higher degree of respect for your obvious intellect and skill with words.

I wish someone could give me this sense of culture for other musical groups that lie outside my limited realm of experience.

PS I guess we have these categories but I just read "All" so I try to give a thread context from reading it.

I was at a poetry slam recently and a young black poet asked if anyone would be offended by his use of the N word. An older back gentleman raised his hand. Context is key. Together they comprised 50% of the black people in the room.

I'm going to go read those comments. It's easy. Click on anyone's name in a thread and you get their site profile and on the right there's a link for all comments. I've used it a lot to put someone's words into context.

  • Thanks @MrSmileZ @wim @High5denied

Really didn’t expect this type of response. Thanks to all. I don’t profess to be any source, point of reference or in position to educate anyone. Just a guy with a perspective no more valuable than any here including those who don’t agree so again...I greatly appreciate all the kind words. Really.

  • In my experience, those who like to kick down the doors of political correctness, are usually the first to bawl for their mammy when they’re on the receiving end of a barbed comment.

Saying that I’m all for free speech, and will defend anyone’s right to mock me in whatever way they choose. As long as they in turn respect my right to punch them in the face in response.

Thanks for that. Context is definitely key. Also, growth. I’m sure you’ll possibly cringe and find fault or flaw in things I may have said in the past. Maybe not. As I acknowledged earlier in the thread, I’ve been influenced by exchanges and PMs from people who may have misunderstood my perspective, vernacular, prickish humor etc. Other times, I may have just been a...Willie.

We’re all highly complex people from wide ranging experiences and environments. Which is why the point of the OP, not being so easily bothered was important to me this morning when someone got offended by my SN.

That person has since expressed apologies after given context for the name. It’s an older black dude. I get it. Now, he does too. He never even knew Negus was a word looooooooong before English was even a thing in America. Context.

Haha...I can dig it. Thats how it was where I was raised. You could say whatever you want out of your mouth as long as your ass could back it up.lol

That doesn’t really translate to women vs men as well though. Or anyone in a less powerful position. So my perspective is fluid. I’m still young. As much a product of a new world deciding to “progress” as I am the one before it that rewarded harder men. Add that to the fact I come from a hard place and have benefited from the thick skin it gave me and you have my nutty ass.

At any rate, thanks for reading.
