That person has since expressed apologies after given context for the name. It’s an older black dude. I get it.

There's a word, a movement that has fallen by the wayside that holds promise for a more peaceful world: integration. Anywhere you see political power being used to divide us by class, ethnicity or religion you will see increased violence born out of injustice.

I am a child of the 60's and in the words of Joni Mitchell "We have got to get back to the garden."

Integration is a petri dish for culturing tolerance.

Anyone that disagrees about tolerance as a key virtue for being a good person can just fuck off.

  • Thanks for sharing your experiences and knowledge @WillieNegus. Just recently heard one of my favorite people Dave Chappelle use the concept "brittle spirit" to push back as you have about the downsides of oversensitivity.

So free speech until you dont like it, then violence ?

Part of that was turning the word Negus (Ruler) to Niggers (Livestock).

    What ?
The word Nigga/Nigger/Negro is a derivation from the latin niger or nigr for the word black, it has never mean't livestock, not sure where you got that from, gas light much ?

You’re missing the point...I wasn’t intending to actually define the word there but paint a picture for how it was used in the given time. Slaves were considered livestock by law at the same time they were called Niggers. Hopefully you can draw the very simple parallel I was speaking too. I’m not a Historian or Professor. Most people will comprehend what I was jntending others won’t. Such is life.

And those words were derived from others before Latin. Depends on whose telling the story. Which ain’t really the point. Just the one you’d like to make...which is your right.

This is an example of overreaction. I'm old enough to respect and understand the ole physical violence threat, but even if you're not, you should be culturally aware that other people grew up in a different time where trash talking meant people weren't afraid to put a foot up your ass.

  • My point was that your information as typed, was in fact incorrect.
Also you say your point wasn't to define a word, but most of that original post is indeed defining the words in your screen name, in fact you even state it as so because it offended somebody, so I am unsure why you are saying that wasn't the point.

Can you give an example of the derivation language pre Latin for the word, I am very interested in this ?

You have a narrow view of the use of words and a desire to bend what you disagree with into a quickly-made dismissal.

You meant derived from the Latin word nigrum right and @WillieNegus is correct Negus came from the Ethiopian Semitic language which pre dates Latin if I remember correctly and means of royal blood hence why he made that statement.

My dad was an Irish builder, and ex champion boxer. From an early age, bad behaviour on my part would receive a warning of a ‘smack in the gob’, if I didn’t pack it in. Language, banter, environment, different times etc. My dad never raised a finger to me or smack me once.

Same with me, I’m a pacifist, and a lefty hippy politically correct wanker. But I still come from that place, that background, that lingo.

Don’t take everything literally is the message here - we all come from different ages and backgrounds, and are offended (or not) by different things.

Hence the thread, and my reaction to it.

and btw what were political correctness and political incorrectness called before the phrases were coined, anybody know?... Inquiring minds would like to know.

Just checked with a school friend and im unsure to be very honest, we both remember Nigr and Niger as meaning Black but both of us seem to remember Nigrem as The color of black, but it is a very long time since we did latin in school, so i will just assume you are correct on this.

That word doesn’t bother me anymore so I don’t care if people say it, I know everybody that love rap said it whether they’re black or not. It’s the way you say that matters the most these days. If it’s said with malicious intent or hate, that = problem.

If you’re not black, you can’t say it. It’s really that simple.
This is Ta-Nehisi Coates giving a really logical, charming response to a (kind of cringey, naive) question posed by a college student.
