    No more Tabletop!? ;-)

That's on hold for a while. Probably they're letting it rot and die
Gonna try finding a message I sent last year asking them about it

Looks like last update was about a year ago, they did a livestream of a bug hunt on youtube around the time they did one for the first iMPC Pro. They always answer my emails about Tabletop.

It actually beats iMPC 2 Pro, in terms of MPC fun: you can use - and record - the Flux Link live performance console (tape stop, filter sweep stuff) on one iMPC Pro while other tracks are running (including other IMPCs or instruments) without effecting other tracks. On iMPC Pro 2 that play surface is global and effects all tracks.

There’s a lot to be said for Tabletop still, if you’re a MPC fiend, in that you can load 9 of them, and use that Flux Link and lay down all kind of crazy performance stuff on each one separately.

I always thought I was in a Support Group of 1 as regards Tabletop. Crashes too much, but I seem to do odd things there (nurse) that only happen there....

Great synth & good news.....but there’s no update showing in the uk store here ? 😕

Edit : had to go to the Apple store, find Phase84 & click on’t before the update materialised, in case anyone else is experiencing the same scenario.

If you check on the extent of the jam site, it says it's pretty much it's the same engine. I guess retronyms reskinned it and added some other goodies like the gate tab and XY thingy.

Yep great synth. For those who don't know, this is also available on the desktop under the name digits. http://www.extentofthejam.com

You're saying this is the same synth or that it's inspired by the same synth? This is the same code as Phase84?

Wow this is great! Thanks for sharing!

Oh. Now I recall what it was. I sent an email regarding these crashes. JP said development/fixes were on hold at that time.

So true. I still love Tabletop a lot. It has a special charm. Just removed from my device because of storage space.
If I get a new device this year, i'll download it again

There's a Rodney Dangerfield-esque one-liner that likens your quote to marriage in there but I'm too dull to chisel it out right now

It’s a world unto itself- and I’m sentimental (bought it the day it dropped, followed it the whole way)
Exactly the oddnesses I've embraced on iPad all along

I haven't been charged again for the iPhone version even if it was written $9.99 too. This is a universal app, don't worry !

  • Hi! I'm glad everyone is digging the new Phase 84. We're all pretty excited about AUv3 here at Retronyms- it opens the door to some very cool possibilities.

Re: Phase 84 vs. Digits: Phase 84 forked off of Digits several years back. For P84, I had to do a bunch of rewrites of Digits code in order to get the CPU down on mobile devices, and we added features like that really cool gate. Digits then went on to get different features like analog-style chorus and the harmonic bit crusher. The filter is also tuned differently between both of them, with Digits being creamier and Phase 84's having more drive. Additionally, the presets start diverging at the branch-off point. So, it's more complex than P84 just being a pretty reskin. Now, that said, you CAN share presets between Phase84 and Digits if you're careful to not use any features unique to that version...

Re: CZ Sysex support: That might be neat. But, although P84 can roughly reproduce some CZ sounds, the parameter space is quite different: It uses an analog-style envelope setup (in multiple ways) and it doesn't use CZ's alternating-waves idea. So, the best-case scenario is, if we were to implement that, it would only get you roughly in the ballpark.

  • Thanks for clarifying re: CZ sysex support. After being hands on, I understand better how this would be difficult. I'm loving this release.

    You rock

  • I'm on the fence with this one. I'm wondering if it offers something "new" to the arsenal of offerings here?

Well there’s no other AU phase distortion synth that I know of. If you like to program on your own then it’s a different approach and you’ll get different results. If you just like presets you’ll probably find some nice sounds but maybe nothing too different from what you have, obviously depending on what you have.

  • edited June 2019

There's a casio implementation of phase distortion as well based upon their old synth, but it's pretty buggy.

I like it phase84 - you can get some really interesting digital sounds out of it.

  • Phase distortion is closer to subtractive synthesis than FM so it's easier to program but can sound wacky and modular yet dreamy. It's as if analog and digital had a crazy psychedelic love child.

Excellent point. That is true. Just watched a demo by NuTrix and it seems nice and fun to my ears. Unabashedly digital, which I do love. Thanks all for your comments.

Good work. I'm getting friendly CPU readings for the richness and complexity of the sounds here on a 2018 iPad regular.

I'd go as far as to say that I'm pretty confident that the same person who created digits is also responsible for the Phase84 :)

Interesting that Retronyms (much maligned hereabouts) is edging further across the AUv3 divide - first iMPC Pro 2 and now this instrument

Hopefully iMini & iProphet will get the same treatment.

    Absolutely!

  • Does this have a wide range of presets or is it a roll your own affair?

    ~120 presets in different categories.
Doug had a live-stream about it some time ago playing thru some of the presets...
