Sure, but where's the feedback to learn? If someone doesn't know that F# minor has 3 sharps how will they select it? Conversely if they select 3 sharps, how do they know they're looking at F# minor?
By having the key selector the user selects their key and immediately sees the result ("Ah, F# minor has 3 sharps").
Pedagogical research consistently shows that implicit learning (i.e. memorization) is benefitted immensely by immediate feedback.
Anyway, I think putting in a circle of fifths selector would be grand....
Yes, but overlays and splits take up a lot of precious screen real estate! If I want a little reference an AU window can be made tiny.
Compare a minimized AU window on the left with the overlaid app on the right:
That would be great!
Please do! It's the one feature I've been hoping for!
Cool you agree with the selector 👍 , You have to be able to read the notes in conjunction with the keysignture, they go together in order for you to read the music. To just know the key isnt enough to be able to read the notation. Having a g major actually take you away from the system of notation and slows the reading process IMO. You still need to know if g major has sharp or flats in it hence the reference in the key signature.
Anyway dev has good solution 🙂
I came here to basically request some version of circle of fifths selector being discussed. But I think my want is much simpler.
I was going to see if you could use the CoF Scale Chords screen to choose chords for the chord pads.
For instance, I can’t always (or ever) remember the I IV V progression and so forth for certain keys and I don’t always need to read the notes, determine how many sharps are in a key, etc. In fact, I rarely do.
I just want to tinker with quick basic progressions and possibilities, sometimes looking for happy accidents where thinking about things from a purely music theory perspective may prevent me from exploring.
Would be cool to select the key via CoF then see the standard seven that can be sent to chord pads maybe with the option to jump to relative minor etc.
I hope that makes sense...
Oh my god. I want that right now. 😄
@eyesunderground
Have you tried the scale chords preset? It shows you a circle of fifths and generates the seven diatonic chords in that key (with the option to include secondary dominants as well). No jumping to relative keys yet though.
@tja Kind of, but not AUv3 and with a different workflow and intended use case. Tonality also has this feature; please don’t contribute to the confusion between the apps.
Please include 9ths too for the circle of fifths auto generation of chords to the pads.
Sorry I haven’t kept up with all of the latest updates but can you swipe across the chord pads and trigger them without lifting your finger off the glass first? This feature is crucial for me.
Thanks
@yowza Added auto-generated ninths to my list! Swiping is coming soon. Could you explain why this is crucial so I can design the feature better? Thanks
Huzzah! Thanks, I hadn't stumbled on the presets at all. No wonder I didn't get on with the chord pads originally due to complexity in setting them up. I was using another app as a reference to create the pads, but that was more cumbersome than I thought it should be.
Kind of. But like @TonalityApp said, not AU and the Chord Pads feature works better for my use.
I've also made the conscious decision to use Tonality over the app-formerly-known-as-UltimateCircleofFifths, which I think is a bit more feature-rich and robust.
First rule of Tonality Club.. we don’t mention the “other” app.. no matter what it’s called this week.. 😆
@eyesunderground Glad the presets are useful! Which aspects did you find cumbersome? Maybe I can improve them. Keep in mind that the new editor (v7) is much more powerful.
Ha I don’t mind too much – just trying to avoid even more confusion
He who shall not be named 😆
Plus TonalityApp is here, taking feature requests, and developing at a ridiculous rate.
Loving this awesome app!
Crazy right? I can barely keep up with what’s been added never mind actually use some of those new features.. 👊 @TonalityApp
Thanks everyone! Your support helps make my time worth it.
I should have said the app was cumbersome due to my sketchy music theory knowledge.
I think the design is good, I just didn’t have the knowledge to quickly know or determine which chords would play well together, so I was constantly referring to a second device to try and figure out which chords to add to the pads.
I think the presets mostly get around all that.
Being able to swipe to any adjacent pad vertically or horizontally and trigger the pad your finger is currently on and let go of the notes of the pad you just left without lifting the finger off the glass. It’s a workflow thing.
ChordPolyPad does it this way but it’s not AU.
Thanks for listening. Tonality gets better with each update!
@yowza Gotcha. Until I can get around to implementing this maybe try MonoPad mode with latch?
Quick survey: how many of you use Reorder mode over the swap tool?
Well, I didn’t even know there was a swap tool....
In testing it out, I’ll say it’s a bit more viscerally satisfying to drag the pads with Reorder and maybe a bit faster if you are making a lot of adjustments. But if you just want to swap positions of non-contiguous pads, Swap is better.
@aplourde I'm increasingly glad I made a manual then
Thanks for your input!
Great! There is manual and just downloaded. Need to learn more about using Tonality (and music too...) at best. Thanks so much Sir.
We had already discussed in another thread about a big chord name display. For the sake of order, I would like to place my "mockup" screenshot in the "official" Tonality thread here.
@klangsulfat Got it, thanks. Should be out in the next update but I’m pretty busy with other work at the moment.
@TonalityApp I’m sure I’m abusing your app, but after a sustained amount of midi chord identifying it goes belly up.
PM if you need more specifics.
