I know the feature requests for the COF au are flying in but it would also be nice to have the randomise velocity/attack like in chord pads if it was possible 😇
All good, adding it to my list.
In addition to the 7th's and 9th's in the COF options for sus2 and sus4 could be handy but not essential...
...I can always create chord pads with those chords.
Noted! Did the latest build fix the issues you noticed with secondary dominant presets?
Was that me? I don't recall having 'issues' with them?! (Sometimes my memory fails me).
I recall just wishing to have the inversion shown on the pads and that is working fine after enabled in the settings.
I did notice that when adding 'scale chords' to the pads or 'extending' the chords on the pads the built-in sounds (piano or guitar) is used...
![](https://forum.audiob.us/uploads/editor/x4/atos40l67trx.jpeg)
...but when adding chords manually the preview is done using the connected app.
And well, since I'm a 'lazy' person the 'pads' on the 'scale chords' dialogue could be 'split vertically' to include the inversions?
(This is one 'thing' I love about GarageBands chord strips).
This would make it super fast to populate the pads with chords and chosen inversions from the start and also make it easier to 'select chords by ear'. (ie. I personally have a lot easier to pick a chord by how they sound rather than what their name is).
If it makes sense feel free to add, I'm just letting out some 'brain farts'![:sunglasses: :sunglasses:](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/sunglasses.png)
Cheers!
where is that screen?
It was this from a bit ago:
The preferred behavior would be MIDI out for all of them, correct?
Noted, thanks for the suggestions!
Tap the pencil icon in the top right, then switch the selector below from the list icon to the scale icon. Then, when you tap on an empty pad you'll get that screen rather than the list of all chords.
Ok, that one is fixed, it's no longer 'sticky'. Thanks for reminding me![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Yepp!
That would be the preferred way for the AUv3's as it would give correct preview with the instrument the plug-in is connected to.
There is one minor 'thing' that I've not gotten my head around yet...
When editing a chord and doing the tapping Choose a Chord to select a chord it would be quite handy if the current chord was automatically selected.
So for example, if I edit a D Minor and tap on the Choose a Chord.
![](https://forum.audiob.us/uploads/editor/ky/u2fqx8cz0cyq.jpg)
It would be handy if D Minor was selected by default when tapping it instead of a full list?
![](https://forum.audiob.us/uploads/editor/or/qrylgm5hibb4.jpg)
This would make it a lot quicker to edit or select a variation based on the key of the chord?
(So D would be selected and Min would be selected by when going to the Choose Chord menu).
Starting with an empty 4x4 if 'No Key' is set it's ok, but if I've selected a key & scale for the grid that could be used as the starting point when adding new chords to the pads?
Also I just learned a new 'Gesture' in Tonality!
I already knew the Swipe Right is 'Extend' a chord but I never though that Swiping DOWN would have a different menu and EUREKA there is the 'Alter' menu that is just what I was looking for![:sunglasses: :sunglasses:](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/sunglasses.png)
Cheers!
Great!
Also noted, good idea.
I'm not quite sure what you mean here, sorry.
Yup! There's a popup that appears explaining this, but it only shows once and is easy to forget. I still want to rework it a bit, so any ideas to make it more intuitive are welcome.
DOH! I had no idea that those gestures even existed.. and I’ve never seen that scale chord screen before either.. thanks for sharing them.. 👍
Tonality, the app that continues to surprise me (in a good way) every time I use it.. 😁
@royor Some of that is definitely on me. I try to make things fairly intuitive throughout the app, but the chord pads (in my opinion at least) are the most lacking in that area. As I told @Samu, if you have suggestions to make things more obvious I'd love to hear them.
I'll clarify![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smiley.png)
When you create a new empty 4x4 grid No Key is set by default.
In these example images I've set the scale to C Major
![](https://forum.audiob.us/uploads/editor/41/4a5kb2kefw0x.jpeg)
And now when adding new chords it would look like this with C Major selected by default.
![](https://forum.audiob.us/uploads/editor/gh/2ukjxwju50cu.jpeg)
So when adding new chord to an empty pad the default would be the selected key / mode for the whole pad layout.
Cheers!
Gotcha, thanks!
@TonalityApp You’ve added so much since I first picked up the app.. I’ve honestly lost track of what’s new to me.. some sections I’ve hardly touched at all + that’s probably normal for most users..
You’ve got a great built-in manual in the standalone app, I just need to browse through it now + again to refresh my brain +/or learn something new.. in reality I need to use the entire app more than I do..
Chord Pads AU is the one I use most and it’s mainly for me to trigger chords that I’ve plunked in on my own.. I do love the scale chords feature.. and still need to investigate the patchstorage capabilities..
You added custom tunings for guitar recently which I was ecstatic about.. Have I made one of my many non-standard tunings in it yet? 🤷♂️ No.. Shame on me..
So.. in the end, it’s my own (un)doing that I don’t know (or use) every useful button, gesture, etc… it’s like most music apps.. need to learn it as you go.. acquaint oneself + then that tool becomes indispensable.. which Tonality is already.. 👍
@royor The manual is a bit out of date
. Enjoy discovering new features though!
Any musical set theory enthusiasts here?
Finally made the Mac version available to beta testers. It has... issues (Apple made the lovely decision to crash instantaneously if you so much as use a slider under the Mac idiom), so the UI is basically that of the iPad. If you get a chance to test it out (or want to be added to the beta) let me know. I mainly just want to see if it's even worth it to make a dedicated Mac version. The biggest advantage I can see is that the AUv3 plugins will run in Logic. Otherwise, I think it's better on iOS.
Wow, @TonalityApp i still haven’t even tried the new Au I better get on it, I’m slacking. Lol.
@TonalityApp hopefully this will help a littLE, when editing a pad, and you go back past the keyboard part, it would be great if the chord you are on is loaded as the chord you are changing. It defaults back to C, at that point. I don’t always know the notes in a chord so I sometimes go past the piano to edit the chord and instead of the chord I editing showing up, it defaults back to a C, like a brand new pad. I think I’m explaining this right. In the Au pads.
@TonalityApp i would love to be able to select both rows and columns, not always having the same amount of each. 7 columns and 3 rows, or what not…
Yup, @Samu recently suggested this and I actually implemented it a few days ago!
For now at least, the best way to do this is to make a 7x7 grid, only fill 3 rows, and then hit the lock button.
I actually saw it right after my post. Lol.
The lock puts blank space in empty Pads correct ?
>
The lock hides all empty pads too![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
That's a first
I agree. I can't stand incredibly responsive devs who work tirelessly to make an app more useful and user friendly, it's THE WORST.
Oh yes![:D :D](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/lol.png)
Apparently “this app has suffered greatly by a dev that keeps adding more”
I understand that things are more complex now and agree that certain aspects are less intuitive or could use a tutorial, but yikes…. Maybe email me about how to make it better?
I get mad when I see low reviews of a great app because the user doesn’t understand how to use the app, I can’t imagine how the developer feels. There should be a way to mark them with user error or something. I’ve seen some developers make a polite response explaining why their review incorrect and offer to help. That’s probably the best bet for a developer, to respond to these type of reviews in a polite and helpful manner.
Could it be a competitor…?
That should be 5 stars considering the attention to detail that is present in Tonality![:sunglasses: :sunglasses:](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/sunglasses.png)
Yeah, it's not the most fun. That's always what I do, though I rarely get a response. People just like to complain – it takes more effort to email me with specific details than it does to write a quick snarky 1-star review. Makes me wonder if they actually want things to be improved.
In this case I responded:
Thank you for the feedback. I agree to some extent that the app may appear overwhelming to beginners or first-time users, which is why I am working on updating the manual included on the settings page. I am also considering a series of tutorial videos. I have limited time to film and edit, but I will get to it.
If you email me your specific complaints (Settings -> Help/Contact) I can actually try to fix them, otherwise it is pure guesswork for me to find what you believe to be unintuitive or needlessly complex. Things that have been praised as intuitive by some may be completely unintuitive to others. As any developer will tell you, opening a dialogue through email is much more helpful for both parties than leaving a semi-vague 1 star review. I do have one specific question: when did you first start using Tonality? Was it intuitive at one point and then a certain update brought it "over the edge" or did you download it for the first time recently and see that there have been a lot of updates?
As an aside, I don't think "ocd" is the term you're looking for, and I should point out that all the needless complexity has been requested by users.
That was one of my (very cynical) thoughts but nah, probably not.
Treat this as a reminder to rate/review apps you enjoy! (And at least first send emails to developers of those you don't)
