Unfortunately custom chords you make in the main app do not transfer to the AU yet, but I can definitely implement custom pads within the AU.
Until then, Tonality has so many chords in its database you can likely find a chord that has at least the notes you want and then mute/delete the others or rearrange their order to be what you want (the voicing editor is pretty powerful). For example, a thirteenth chord has all major scale degrees so you can just take out ones you don’t want in the case of chords with only diatonic components. I know it’s a bit of a hack for now and not all that convenient but I’m definitely working on making that aspect better.
The process of choosing a chord for a pad allows you to enter the notes you want though, and probably nine times out of ten a chord containing those notes will exist and show up.
Let me know if you have further questions or suggestions!
Gah this comment was unintentional and I can’t delete it
Wow, thanks For the fast reply! Ideally i’m looking for a chord Pad AU that will let you build chords from nothing by just toggling the notes you want for each pad. AFAICT, none of the current chord pad apps will do this...you must select a chord first and then alter its voicing. Adding this functionality would make Tonality the exception. Maybe add a “custom” button to the chord selector screen that would give you a blank keyboard to start with?
Actually I just bought Tonality because the chord pad AU seemed like the closest thing to what I want, and it is. 🙂 the note selector keyboard is great...With 2 additions it woukd be exactly what I’m looking for: 1) the notes you toggle could play via midi, so I could hear what I’m building, 2) even if no existing chords match exactly my notes, it could still let me bind them to the pad.
But you’re right, the chord selection/editing process is a decent workaround as it is. At any rate, it’s more robust than the other chord pads i’ve looked at. 🙂
All good ideas! Should be available soon. Glad you’re enjoying it!
Velocities of each note in a chord.
(eg having a chord where the low root note has more volume than the upper notes)
Velocity of the trigger itself would also be great for expressive chords - so the whole chord can be played soft or loud.
Then yes, they are already preserved even when triggered. Currently the behavior is that a trigger causes the chord to be played exactly as if you had tapped it. I just added an option for velocity of the trigger itself to affect the output velocity and it should be out in the next update!
Wow - this is a huge plus!
Thanks for your huge effort
Indispensable app.
Great admitió sin for the next update, thanks @Tonality !
Version 5.1 is out!
@Mayo There is now the option to have the incoming MIDI trigger's velocity scale the pad's velocity
@Shabudua You can now create entirely custom chord pads with no associated chord and a custom label
can anyone check to see if their sustain pedal works with the AU's please?
Specifically the Grandstaff and Chord/Scale Identification AU, and with a continuous MIDI pedal. @[Deleted User] what model do you have?
Its comes with a yamaha ydp 161 digital piano (I know not very rock star). Its works with all my other apps.
Again I don't know. I've recreated the MIDI messages it sends and everything works fine. Does anyone else have issues with a continuous pedal, or have any ideas as to why one might randomly not work?
@[Deleted User] My sustain button works in Tonality Chord midi pads Au. It did get stuck once or twice, but generally works well.
@TonalityApp Thanks for constantly updating Tonality, I love the app.
@[Deleted User] i think I misread your question
Hey man, im referring to using a midi sustain pedal to trigger the hold
@Poppadocrock When the sustain button got stuck, do you remember swiping by any chance? If you swipe on the sustain pad you can lock/unlock it, which may have been what you were experiencing.
@TonalityApp Ohh, I did not know that... I bet I did. Thanks for letting me know.
Are there any videos for this app?
No one can help check for me? :-(
@kin I think someone made one but it’s pretty outdated. If you let me know what features you want to preview I’d be happy to make one though.
@[Deleted User] it’s a pretty specific request.
true but there are some pretty specific members on this forum and super helpful :-)
@[Deleted User] fair enough
@kin Also let me know which device type you’d want to see
I would like a video that shows the basic flow for building up a chord progression as an AU in a host.
@lukesleepwalker Here you go:
Let me know if there's anything else you want to see.
Thanks for the quick reply, @lukesleepwalker has nailed it, that's exactly what I would like to see too.
The circle of fifths also, I have had a hand drawn one stuck on the wall at work for at least ten years, I keep looking at it and trying to memorise it but nothing sticks.
Perhaps a video showing how you would use the circle of fifths to build a chord progression to then use with the chord pads.
@kin The circle of fifths exists inside the main app, not the chord pads (except for a certain kind of pad layout that I'll demonstrate), so I'll show that and then the AU. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks very much.
@kin Okay here it is:
