Yeah, I think it gets a little forgotten. It’s really great, and it’s really useful for stifling my urge to buy a Morphagene…

Really glad you’re highlighting it, @Gavinski , it deserves a lot more love.

It does. It's very annoying because social media tends to focus always on novelty. Viewers are more interested in that so 'creators' are also herded in that direction. It all gets unbearably tedious after a while, I'm so sick of the frenzy for constant novelty. Viewers can decide to change their habits I guess, and creators can also try to remind them that the old stuff still rocks.

Saw a post on twitter just now that resonated. 'Imagine making music with the stuff you've already got' 🔥 🤷‍♂️

I’ve always appreciated Doug reviving the oldies on his channels.

Yes sure. Doug's very prolific, putting out a vid a day, so he kind of has to. It's harder for ppl who post more sporadically to choose to do older stuff instead of new stuff, as they're potentially hurting the growth of their channel by doing so.

In a way , it might be beneficial for someone to do the somewhat more obscure iOS instruments like Red Animal and BB17, that aren’t really covered as much as someone somewhere might one day look for them …and it might be someone other than me one day too 😂

Oh sure, doing things on stuff that hasn't been covered properly by other youtubers is definitely a good way too. There's just not much incentive to make walkthroughs of apps that had thorough walkthroughs done on them years ago. If no good walkthroughs were ever done on the apps before, that's another story, but still. Generally new stuff is what the audience is interested in and those vids so better with the algorithms. Horrible but it is what it is.

The GSI organ apps are some of my most used and favorite apps in general. Certainly not many demos out there though. BB17 is quite good as well if you like softer moving drones.

How does red animal compare to combo organ v ? That $3.99 price looks attractive esp considering this organ was used by two of my biggest influences (beach boys and Pink Floyd)

GSI has a bundle with both Red Animal and Compact Deluxe which is the best way to go if you want any of their apps.

The InsideOut apps are really great for the price though! GSI apps are modeled and the other is samples but if you don’t want to spend as much it’s a very viable option.

Also check out the Lost in the 70s apps. Torero by that dev is a Farfisa Matador clone and it’s also excellent and very cheap.

Personally I’d say if you can afford it, it’s definitely worth the extra scratch. Don’t underestimate their Farfisa clone either. Both of them were used a TON during the same time period by pretty much the same artists. Don’t think I could pick a favorite but the Farfisa was Suicides main tool so that might be my pick lol

Also just as an extra rec, the organ IAP in Korg Module is quite good albeit with less control. I’m a sucker for organs, they’re my favorite instrument, so hit me up if you have any questions.

I’m trying to think. I’ll have a look tomorrow and report back if I do. I know a couple tracks on the project I’m working on use them in an experimental context but no video for it. I know I’ve used them plenty though so I should have something laying around. Will check :)

Not wanting to be that guy, lol, but I don't suppose you have any recordings / vids lying around where u used either of these organs for something more ambient or experimental? If not, absolutely nay worries, mate! 😁

I’m trying to think. I’ll have a look tomorrow and report back if I do. I know a couple tracks on the project I’m working on use them in an experimental context but no video for it. I know I’ve used them plenty though so I should have something laying around. Will check :)

Zero pressure haha, and lso no need for vid. I'm just really curious to hear them in that more ambient context or whatever, because if you look online it basically seems to be nothing but ppl trying to sound like The Doors or The Animals, which is great but is not what I'm personally interested in doing with these. Still feel the lack of any envelopes makes them less useful than they would be for my own personal preferences regarding what to do with tones like these.

I can’t find the bundle on the App Store 😞

They removed that bundle some time ago it seems, unfortunately 🤷‍♂️

Gotcha…. Probably for the best for my bank account til next month 😂

If combo organ v is samples I think I’m just gonna save up for red animal. Yeah it’s like a $9 difference but it’ll probably be worth it

Totally understandable. Would you be okay with using them with something like Attack Softener from Blue Mangoo? Haven’t tried those together but it sounds like it could work.

Organs and Mellotrons are my favorite instruments so it’s hard for me not to sing their praises 😂 the Philicorda app from Fingerlabs and Torero from Lost In the 70s are 2 great organ apps with standard amp envelopes.

Anyways, I set a reminder for tomorrow, it’s been a busy day today. If I can’t find something I’ll try and whip something up quickly if I get a chance :)

Honestly no pressure! Attack softener is not ideal at all actually. Only does up to 1 second attack, it's definitely no ambient maker!

Klevgrand Hillman, which I bought a few weeks ago to satisfy a sudden craving to buy sth 😂 and because I thought it would sound good with Real Phase (it does!) is my current fave, along with iPhilicorda, when I want ambient organ sounds. Also some nice stuff in Decent Sampler.

I do wish ppl would stop doing slavish emulations. Be authentic where it matters, but surely there's no harm in adding an option for adsr to organ apps, even if the hardware didn't have them. 'just an opinion' alert

Funny I was just talking in a different thread earlier today about that being one of my pet peeves as well. Nothing wrong with adding a couple of quality of life features lol as long as the sound you’re emulating is there, all it’s gonna do is make the app better.

There are certainly some good option on Pianobook. IMO nothing can touch the GSI apps on iOS for organ. Maybe the Ik and Blue3 apps. Hillman is great though! It’s almost a blend between a mellotron and organ, I love it.

Oh and btw Galileo 2 also has an amp envelope but imo, it doesn’t sound great. Very harsh to my ears.

Yeah, I saw that discussion about how it is annoying when apps don't have synced delay just cos the hardware didn't. I agree that's annoying, very annoying. It seems needlessly pedantic and lacking in vision or understanding of what's important in an emulation and what isn't.

I forgot about Galileo, thanks, but yes, seems many don't rate it as highly as many of the others.

Exactly. It happens in the hardware world sometimes too where a company will recreate a classic and leave usb out because it wasn’t in the original. Like..cmon dude. We’ve all moved on now 😂

I think Galileo is fine. But just fine. I don’t think there were that many organ apps when it came out and I liked it a lot then (still love a lot of Yonac apps), but it just don’t compare to the quality of the modeled organs we have now. Modeling seems like it’s gonna slowly fade out sample based apps some day.

  • Re: the limitations… I actually like it when it has the same as the original because it forces me operate a certain way.

Re: Galileo … I finally get the complaint from someone (I think it was Samu ) about that Yonac sound, as it’s why I didn’t vibe with trooper despite it being of good quality

I plan on putting a whole bunch of FX on them … gonna stick ReelBus on Red Animal whenever I do get it and see if I can get close to that “melty “ organ sound Brian Wilson had on Wild Honey
