  • The update includes a more sensitive velocity scaling to pick up light touches -- and they will further refine based on user feedback. It doesn't include Bluetooth improvements which they say is on their radar and coming in a future update. Nailing the touch sensitivity is apparently the highest priority.

Thanks for the heads up. Looking forward to hear your feedback.

How much was it? 😂 (I'm joking.) Yeah, the Sensel Morph looks pretty cool. Shame it was discontinued.

  • Lucky guy, i was looking for this too.

Real shame yes. It really holds up though, even years later with no support. The interesting thing getting into it now instead of when it was active is that I KNOW it won't receive any fixes so I just have to work with what's there. Because of that I'm actually pretty content with how it does everything and it does A LOT.

I basically have a fully functioning mini Linnstrument, keyboard, piano, programmable drum controller, and video editor interface in one. All bluetooth, and smaller and just as portable as my iPad. It's nuts.

I actually nearly bought one in 2018 when i met their team at the Ableton Loop conference in LA. Glad I didn't though, i wouldn't have appreciated it then the way i do now.

I was very close to buying an Exquis controller for a little extra portability last month which i why i came back to the Morph. I made the right choice and now I'm gonna go program it to work exactly like an exquis just for shits and giggles. 😂

I'm curious if anyone here uses a morph still?

  • I'm gonna sell mine (with four overlays), have only used it a couple of times. Was thinking of putting it on Ebay in early January. I'm in Berlin, Germany and would like to make it as easy as possible for myself (no overseas or so).

  • So I have a Morph. Haven’t used it much since I got it back when it first came out. I bought it for my modular synth with the Buchla overlay and also the Mpc layout overlay. Surprisingly the music keyboard overlay which I didn’t order is still available on Amazon which I just ordered. I plan on using the morph with the iPad now that I’m back into iOS music making. How difficult is it to connect Bluetooth to an iPad and the morph?

I had an issue connecting it through bluetooth to my iPad initially. I followed these instructions and it worked and i had no issues since.

Connecting by bluetooth is a gamechanger. It makes the morph feel so portable and easy.

With MPE? I never got it to work well with MPE over Bluetooth. It would choke on the data overload. MPE over USB was OK, and regular Mido over Bluetooth was OK though.

Exactly this. I’ve had the same experience with MPE and BT.

Haven't had a single issue with MPE midi over bluetooth in a month of daily use. So 🤞🏽

Which MPE synths are you using on the iPad?

  • Tera pro, RingsFx, WaveCloud, Megalit, Agonizer, Atoms, Samplewiz, Drambo, DRC, Geoshred, SWAM, Spacecraft, Xinematix...

You name it really. There isn't many that say MPE that i don't own. 😂

Good to know! I’ll look at all of these that you mentioned. I have Tera Pro, Drambo and Rings FX. Had no idea they were MPE. Haha

  • Which Overlay do you guys tend to use with the iPad? I’m thinking the traditional music keyboard is probably the best fit but I have the Buchla and 16 pad overlays.

  • I use the Innovators overlay with a Linnstrument-like map and printed paper, and the 16 pad overlay for music. I use the video production overlay, the qwerty keyboard, and the Buchla one for other things.

Ok got it. Sorry for all the questions but when it comes to the 16 pad overlay and MPE Functionality…do you just setup and customize the knobs, pads and keys to midi CC numbers and such? Did you setup the Morph with the Morph software or just keep it as is? I have the morph software installed on an old computer not sure if it’s still available for download or not. Thanks for all the insight.

  • Oh no, questions? Sorry, i just can't do questions. You must be mistaking this place for some kind of open internet forum dedicated to a specialized topic. 😉

Kidding, bring on the questions! For some strange reason my wife and 9 year old both don't seem terribly interested in chatting about deprecated midi controllers and such 🤷🏽‍♂️

As far as MPE functionality on the Morph goes, i believe the Buchla template is the only overlay that was configured INITIALLY with MPE enabled. Anything else you might want has to be made or modified yourself, or download a senselmap file from somewhere.

Definitely go to the Sensel website and grab the latest software, it's still available, but you need a computer because it was never made for iOS. When you connect the Morph check to see if its running the most recent firmware.

You can either customize the pad functions on the overlays you have, OR you can build something totally new and either assign that map to the Innovators overlay (if you have it) or to "no overlay" to be able to use a custom overlay map when you have no overlay on the Morph. Its pretty common for people to build or download a map and then print a piece of paper that shows the pad locations and tape it to the Morph.

Absolutely go to the Sensel Morph forum though and read up. The forum isn't super active but it still exists and is full of great information.

You know, if you're comfortable with tera pro and Drambo theres very little else you need synth wise. Id add Geoshred with some IAP real instruments from SWAM or Naada, and a granular MPE synth like Wavecloud, Samplewiz, or Quanta 2. Xinematix if you have harddrive space on your iPad.

Drambo and Tera pro cover A TON of ground. You can save cash by leaning into them.

That said RingsFX is my all time fav synth to play mpe, so gorgeous, the sounds are all very useable, and the extra polyphonic mode make it better than the Tera pro rings IAP.

  • Man, I really appreciate all the info @Tentype !

  • @Tentype is it possible to charge the Morph via USB and stay in Bluetooth mode? Every time I plug in usb it disconnects Bluetooth

Hmm, never tried. There no specific options in its software to manage that behaviour tho, so i assume that's just how it works. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Usb connection is clearly a better option if you can tho. I'm curious why you'd want to connect by bluetooth if you have usb available?

Really just to keep it charged. Also if and when the battery dies it would be nice to know power via USB wouldn’t render it completely useless.

  • edited December 2024

well, I used it till the battery died, and then plugged it in and continued using it immediately, so I can confirm that works. it does seem to run off USB power directly and not just through the battery while it’s being charged.

I seem to be able to get about five hours of use out of it on a full battery.

there is an option in the software to have it slow charge by USB if you’re plugged into an iPad, instead of fast charge. So that might be a good option if you’re concerned about using too much power from your iPad. You could have it on slow charge and just monitor your iPad battery, knowing that the morph won’t die until your iPad does?

Ok cool thanks for the update. Looks like i probably need to update my Morph. I’ll do that today.

Unfortunately any time a USB cable is connected (either from a computer, iPad or just from a power block), Bluetooth is disconnected so if you just want to charge the Morph from a pure USB power source Bluetooth will be unavailable. It will charge from a computer or iPad while connected and in use but it will be a longer process.
