It sounds great.. Way better than the CZ-101 I bought back in high school.

Man, I’m so tempted. But Black Friday took a toll... :(

  • I don't think I'll delete Phase84 quite yet, but this seems way bigger.

Don't! It's different and polyphonic. Quite underrated.

It sounds nice but MPE stands for "MIDI Polyphonic Expression" so how does it fit with being monophonic?

It has more to do with expressiveness than polyphony.

Agree. I was expecting this since I saw that peek preview. Monophonic is not a problem for me. I look forward diving into it and playing the t with my Linnstrument.

But given MPE definition and the misunderstandings it is subject to, maybe it should be called MME? Midi Monophonic Expression.

How is it on the cpu? Would an older iPad handle it okay?

Volt was a cpu greedy b’stard on my Air2.
Anyone comment on cpu usage here vs volt as a comparison ?

I have an Air 3. Using one instance of Volt in AUM, the DSP meter hovers between 13% - 20% whilst a patch is played. ShockWave is around double that at 26% - 40%

Ew, sounds like that might rule out my Air 2 then

I have a first gen iPad Pro 9.7 with the 2 gigs of ram, and this is what I’m getting after 4 instances all running separate sequences from AUM... I’d be shocked if your air 2 couldn’t handle it. It seems very efficient.

    Thanks for that.

I’m overdue an iPad upgrade anyway, but I reckon I’ll get this one later. Sounds very good, and I really like the look of the built-in sequencer.

Just about to watch Doug’s vid:

Another very cool thing is that you can send midi into Shockwave AND you can send it out. So, you can have one instance of Shockwave set up and being driving by sequence 1, modulated by sequence 2, and then sending sequence 1 or 2 out to drive yet another instance of Shockwave, or a drum synth, or anything really. You can get really interesting combinations going very quickly.

This is what I do in AUM pretty much every session
How does this fair in sound to the 2 other named Phase Distortion synths on iOS, NPD and Phase84?

NPD is a great sounding synth. I beta'd on that one but never really got on with the interface so I never bought it. I don't have the other. I haven't used NPD enough to do a fair comparison though.

NPD is polyphonic, Shockwave has various ways of the two oscillators modulating each other, plus waveforms that NPD does not have.
NPD is certainly surprisingly good at bread-and-butter sounds while Shockwave can step into wild (but monophonic) sonic territory more easily.

I would say they're too different to really compare. They both say "Phase Distortion" but that doesn't mean they sound like a CZ-101.
See my little feature comparison on the first page of https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/36057/shockwave-synthesizer-best-synth-app-2019-haq-attaq/p1

The modulation window keeps appearing when I dont want. Like when adjusting a knob (maybe its recognizing that as long press?)
    Anyone else?

Yes, I posted about that a few posts back but no-one else picked up on it. It is a real issue in usability. I hope it can be addressed quickly.

  • I LOVE this thing. I don’t care what it is or how it is, it sounds and plays amazing.

  • well that's bitten into the Drambo fund :)
This is a nice deep synth. Improved on the volt gui too. Not keen on the name though, reminds too much of the Hair gel :D

@musgo I was also thrown off by the description "one channel MPE". I don't think that exists, since MPE needs at least 2 channels. One channel (usually Channel 1) is used for global messages. The remaining channels (usually Channels 2–16) are used to transmit notes and expressive data.

However, I think monophony and MPE are compatible. I assume the MPE mode instructs the synth to interpret the channels as described above, but being monophonic, the synth will only render one note at a time.

Yes, you do still need to set your controller to multichannel to get Shockwave to work in MPE, and if you run it through a MIDI monitor you'll see that it's doing completely standard MPE exactly as described above. Maybe "Single Channel MPE" refers to MIDI out, using Shockwave as a monophonic MPE controller for other apps.

  • Only time for some presets so far but ... WHOAH. This synth sounds really really grande!

This is quickly becoming my fav synth on iOS. Never been into sound design, more of preset tweaker but this is somehow easy and fun to program. Very great for hip hop, funk and soul. You can make a whole record with 4-6 instances. If you use BM3 you could route those instances into audio tracks, resample and go crazy in the sampler.

That said, I would definitely buy more patches for this one.

  • Doesn’t work well in Zenbeats which is a major bummer because that app is really dope. You may want to take a look @ka010

How do you get back to the root of the library from within a category?
I'm stuck in sequenced and there seems no way back

Anyone else having an issue with preset names not being displayed in the AUv3 ?
Browser ‘lcd’ always says init when another preset is loaded.
    Air2 latest iOS

@ka010 , sounds awesome, will stress test the Air2 this weekend.

Is it working ok otherwise with the Air 2?

It is working beautifully, although I only had a quick play last night. Will have more time this weekend

  • Synth is amazing. Will be the synth I actually decide to learn.

You said it. So many synths. I was doing good until the sales hit and then this one out of the blue!

Factory was my first synth. This has the same profoundness. Complicated usually means good, although Iv been able to make something with shockwave, without knowing what all features do ( effects though )

    Tap ‘All’ or another category?

Same here - the categories disappear as soon as I resize the AUV3 window while browsing in the presets ...

    So this suggestion doesn’t work ... )

I guess it’s a bug - anybody knows if the devs are present in the forum or do we have to contact them directly ,,,?

And another thing I noticed - the „detune“ knob in the x-mod section doesn’t react to the long press for adding modulation. Is it supposed to be like this? Anybody else having this problem?

—- besides these things - up to now a very pleasurable and enjoyable synth - great work !

As a general rule, you should contact devs directly. There are only a few devs that I know of that check the forum consistently enough for it to be used for support.
