I really like NS2 but Cubasis still gets the job done when NS2 doesn't. I think Cubasis sorely lacks in the sampler which @lfs could consider as an IAP. Obsidian is awesome.
Currently for me it is NS2 for sketching/writing tracks and Cubasis for mixing, editing, mastering, audio overdubs and cherries/sprinkles on top. Once Ns2 gets its audio tracks it all comes down to how well implemented it is.
Mobile hardware, OS and app developments have been growing at a faster pace than any other hardware/software - to capture the market and have a choke-hold on it. If Apple doesn't innovate at breakneck speed, they know someone else will and eat their lunch. This faster pace is what breaks existing apps.
Competition is good for consumers.
There will be some hiccups in a rewritten software as expected (things that got slipped through the cracks) until they are ironed out and stabilized.
As almost an aside, and to balance others, I am not really a phone fellow but am very happy using NS2 on it. Elegant.
Have not used NS2 on the phone yet but I was recently amazed at how well you could write tracks in NS1 on an iphone 4s using one hand / thumb. Wow
I’m one of those NS2 people...the UX just works for me. Luckily I don’t need audio tracks (although I definitely want them in NS2🙂). Cubasis 1 & 2 just never inspired me for some reason, and Cubasis 3 doesn’t look all that different, so I’m passing on it.
No ..... NS2 has midi tempo/signature change .. Cubasis 2/3 does not .. that is huge if like me you are a composer of classical music and jazz fusion. I still prefer Cubasis though when I don’t need tempo. However in its current state Cubasis 3 is so buggy as to be unusable with the majority of my Cubasis 2 projects.
Apple may know this, but apparently nobody told the GarageBand team. 😆
Can't help to wonder if Ableton is cooking something for iOS/iPadOS considering Link is almost de-facto standard for syncing apps on the platform
@cloudswimmer : Oh me too w the jazz fusion. I can’t for example insert a bar if 3/4 inside of a 4/4 tune on C3? Dealbreaker ! Thanks!!!!!!
Cubasis 3 as a separate app launch was an ideal approach. If it was the same v2 (offered to users for free) and if users get stuck due to some bugs in the re-written app which may take some time to resolve, users would get stranded. Fortunately, there is a separate, stable old version to continue work on our mission-critical projects
Good point @MobileMusic
I agree..
Another thing thats is essential for me is that an app has to work as a solid machine.. So stability, solid timing is crucial. I don't want crashes or timing hiccups. Caustic, NS2, Xequence, Gadget all perform great...
@anickt :Yeah Caustic works great! If only it was auv3
I fear Caustic dev has moved on. 😢
+1 to this! FWIW, I started using NS2 and wondered if I was crazy because of all the people raving about its workflow. After a few days, it finally started to click and I got some great ideas going, but for now I've placed NS2 into my "creation tool" category (in good company with Gadget, BM3 and the Ampify suite, among others) while I've decided that Cubasis is THE "finishing tool" for me. The jury is still out on ZenBeats but part of me is hoping it will continue to evolve into something beautiful (like the "Ableton of iPads").
Has Cubasis 3 Finally surpassed NS2? It definitely surpassed early NS2 betas by the number of bugs
Ouch. You are right.
NS2:
amazing workflow, even on iphone.
great inbuilt synths - e.g. mapping samples on the synth is so easy.
great implementation of AU presets, all presented in one searchable list and it loads the AU in the background.
solid as a rock, no crashes.
best midi editing piano roll.
Cubasis:
good for audio.
solid overall experience.
better AU effects implementation.
hmm, NS2 wins it for me but I use both for different things.
(note: I don't have Cubasis 3 yet, but I presume these impressions are generally correct still, besides C3 bugs!!)
This simply isn't true, I bought a desktop PC for £5 on Ebay last week that runs a multitude of free software that is vastly superior to near enough everything on IOS.
IOS is portable, that is its ONLY advantage.
Some also feel multitouch is an advantage.
What @AudioGus said.
In my opinion, NS2 and Cubasis 3 go hand in hand. Once NS2 gains audio tracks, Cubasis 3 may still be useful depending on what editing functions the NS2 audio tracks will have.
I think portability is one thing (but you get portability also wih notebook (especially with models like macbook air - super thin, light).
As @AudioGus ... for me 2 most important advantages
Last one is particulary important for me. Many people wants iOS apps matching feature set of desktop apps (especially DAWs) - not me. For me limitations are actually boosting factor for creativity. I like limited feature set, on desktop i ended with trillions of plugins installed working in DAW wih trillions of features - but my creativity was drowning in available posibilities and i ended in creative block.
With iOS limitations i made actually way much more music durig last 9 years than i ever made on desktop with "limitless" posibilities..
Same here mate.
And me! 😆
I have a full specced MacBook Pro which would be amazing for production, but it’s my ‘work computer’ and will never be anything else.
😍
You should try adding an AU effect to a track in GarageBand
