I've found it necessary to apply the 'random' parameter to 'density' or 'tune' to get intervals in pitched correctly. Modulating 'density' in the matrix also leads to good results. If you wiggle 'tune' back and forth with your finger by a very small amount it can also bring a patch to life. Unfortunately that parameter is not accessible in the matrix, but oddly enough, its 'random' parameter is.

When 'random' is 0 on density, size, and tune then the grains create something like a sideband. I guess 'random' is a bit like injecting noise, and gives movement to the grain which eliminates those static sideband frequencies.

@rcf are you referring to 1.0.4 (publicly released today) or is there another beta?

    1.0.4 via TestFlight.

Thanks, I will give that a try; it's slightly odd behaviour nevertheless. The only unwanted noise I'm getting is when I use the arpeggiator in live mode to get something rhythmic going...

  • Yeah FRMS threw me off at first too. I was expecting that mid to high density and sized grains would create a cleaner, fuller sound resembling the source audio, but that wasn't the case. Only after applying 'random' could I start getting expected results.

  • Interesting, will try this

  • I would love to see some optimizations for older devices. Frms is the first app having a hard time running on my air2 (standalone and AU mode). It crashes constantly only using 1 voice.

  • Latest update fixed my issue and FRMS is now running fine.

  • @sinosoidal

Sorry if you’ve answered this already but is a universal (iphone) update planned for frms?

It will be hard but we will surely try. I don't have an ETA though.

  • What’s the performance like now on an Air 2?

  • edited June 2020

Yes, it is our 6th Anniversary Super Sale for the next 7 days!

    https://www.imaginando.pt/media/our-sixth-anniversary

  • I too am interested in how well FRMS runs on an iPad Air 2 (iPadOS13.5.1), ie. how much polyphony and how many AUv3 instances it can handle... (I might get it to support an awesome dev though).

Depending on the outcome of WWDC'20 (ie. if the iPad Air 2 gets iPadOS14 support) I might end up getting a new iPad but I hate the fact that I'll be loosing the headphone jack and face the with the fixed sample-rate insanity that still cause mayhem...

Thanks. I want to buy it but it’ll just sit on my iPad unused if I can’t use it on my iPhone (like quanta!)

  • Nice! I didn't pick up FRMS for desktop during launch because the pandemic left me out of work, and before FRMS was optimized it was a bit heavy for my Mac. I'll definitely be picking it up now though!
Thanks for the generous sale, and happy 6th anniversary!

    @gregsmith
One of the most important differences between this and Quanta is that FRMS can process live audio. It's not just a synth, but also an incredible harmonizer / pitch shifter. Also, 4 granular layers with FM between them is huge.
This sale is a total steal. But I understand we all have different workflows :)

My Air 2 has been playing up over the last month, might update it from 12x and see if that helps.

@sinosoidal - have the recent updates made the app more usable on an Air 2?

  • whats the advantages of singing into FRMS? icloud storage? just curious as it has a login

  • @sinosoidal FRMS is performing better after recent updates thanks.

As mentioned in my recent support email, am looking forward to the INPUT mode bug being fixed so that INPUT doesn’t need to be toggled off and on again to work with live input. Still not working in latest beta.

I asked them about this a while back. It can be confusing when user presets do not save the live input state.

With DRC it lets you share patches between platforms. Never used it with FRMS but I assume same purpose

If you sing into it then you can make crazy synth patches based on your voice. 😉

I just got this last night (at 3:30 am), delayed bedtime another half hour. my fish tank made some cool material for patches though, I forgot how fun granular synthesis is. Ran flawlessly on 2018 ipad, latest os.

K7D is my favorite delay and a sweet tape delay emulation, I think the best tape delay on ios!

DRC is one of my favourites, so I took a leap with FRMS today, since the price is right. After initial testing, my Air 2 really seems to be struggling with it.

Hosted in AUM, running a sequence of eighth notes At 90 bpm from StepBud, there was near constant crackling, with the DSP hovering around 100%. Switching from poly to mono mode helped considerably, and there is a “high quality” setting which, when turned off, helped as well. In mono, with high quality off, a single instance was playing without crackling at 50 DSP.

Glad to have purchased at this price, as it really does seem pretty cool, but will probably wait until Santa brings me a shiny new Air 3 before I really dive into it.

    Ah, hmm...thank you.

I was hoping to be able to just run it in standalone, or one instance in AUM and record audio from it as sample fodder, sounds like I’ll have to give it a miss though.

An Air 3 is on the cards for me too at some point, not sure when that will be though.

Same happened to me on my Air 2. Christmas maybe
