Yeah, and in that case I wouldn’t bother, since the benefits of a touchscreen mean more to me than gains in CPU.
Be interesting to see how they will integrate into the Mac file system too.
Yeah I think it'll just be a nice alternate way to use your apps, but not a big game changer.
^this
I think if the price is right (and I would be surprised if ARM Macs were more expensive than intel) my next Mac will have an A chip in it.
"Embracing ARM and making its hardware more consistent across the iPhone, iPad and Mac ranges is a strategic necessity, but there will be inevitable bumps along the road."
Looking at the mistakes they’ve made over the last few years, I’d be inclined to wait a bit before jumping in. Personally I wouldn’t swap my MBP Intel 16” for the World, it’s the best computer I’ve ever used.
The 16" pro I got from my work is an extremely nice machine and it'll keep me going a long while.
If anything this announcement makes me think about when I'm jumping ship on macOS. Not really interested in my laptop becoming a walled garden.
lol
"macOS BS"
Maybe they reconsider that now
I would love a 16” MBP. But I have a lemon 15” touchbar MBP and can’t justify or afford a new top of the range laptop.
I will be looking at an entry level ARM laptop to replace the MBP. Which is the worst Mac I’ve ever owned. And I had a Performa once.
I think my favourite ever Mac was the PowerBook duo with dock. The PowerBook docked inside like a huge VHS and transformed the laptop into proper desktop.
It was awesome. :-)
Yeah, my 2012 Mac Mini is definitely more powerful than a 2014 model that does support the new OS. I’ll likely just keep using my 2012 but I have been considering upgrading it at some point. It doesn’t look like the new MacOS does anything I need anyway. I have barely been using my Mac as it is as I just use iPad for most things.
I’m definitely for getting a Mac that can run all of these iOS music apps I have. If that works out well for it, I’ll likely make the jump. I don’t even use my Mac for music currently. I just use my iPads and not even my phone.
They should put this developer kit A12-Z with 16GB RAM in the iPad too.
Ha - I’d forgotten about the Performas! I’ve got a knackered PowerMac in the shed, ready for the tip too
I’ve been lucky with my 2012 MBP, 8 years old and still going strong. The 16” was pricey - even though it was the base model, but I was desperate and at that point the world looked like it was ending, so I thought what the heck! I checked all the reviews though, and they were extremely positive, and it’s been a lovely thing.
I think I’d just wait until they make their mistakes on the first few models and OS releases, you don’t want another lemon!
Yeah, no regrets here at all, happy with hardware and software that works!
True!
I’ve been using Macs since a Mac II in the late 80s. I think my current MBP is the only lemon in all that time.
My previous laptop was a 17” MBP (the first of the unibody 17s). I still have it. It still works despite me having dropped it more than once (it is huge!).
It was a great machine.
I usually make a Mac last a long time. But I don’t think my screen/graphics card will last much longer in my MBP. I will have a choice to make sooner rather than later I think.
I am still in the reality distortion field at the moment. It’ll be while before we get to see what the ARM Macs will actually be like and how they perform.
And how much they cost.
But after the keynote, I’m quite optimistic.
For a decades long Mac nerd, I’m excited about the future of the Mac.
And I haven’t been able to say that for a while.
I quite like being happy. I think I’ll Try and ignore the inevitable complaining for a while.:-D
Oh definitely, I’ve used them since 1992, but only gone fully Mac again this year after 20 years on Windows as my main work machine. The new MacBook Pro’s are a definite return to form, and so I’ll be keeping an eye out next year to see what they do with their iMacs
I'm VERY skeptic about ARM macs.. they will use A12Z .. which is i terms of performance same like A12 for audio apps... just look at iPad MINI5/Air3 - how much plugins you can run run there. For example 6 instances of Model D and thats it, done.
They presented Maya - which is 3D app with extensive usage of GPU.. then they demoed some game - again GPU.. then FCPX - again GPU.. GPU is very good in A12Z chip, and i guess that mac will have even dedicated GPU - probably some NVIDIA ?
i'm expecting ARM Macs will be good for GFX/Games, but for Logic X / DAW / audio apps - i would definitely stay with intel CPU for music apps on Mac - there are in general lot more CPU demanding plugins than on desktop than on iOS and A12Z is i terms of audio apps performance slightly worse (significantly in multicore performance, because it has just 2 hp cores in contrast with 4 cores or more for intel chips) than intel processoes in macbooks pro 2015 .... so it's not completely bad, bid definitely worse that latest i9 processors in current MacBook Pro models...
But these are just the developer kits:
https://developer.apple.com/programs/universal/
I am sure they will put out some much more powerful chips for the ARM macs when they ready for the crowd. For sure they will not just put the same iPad chips in macbook pro and iMacs or even the macPro.
i think A12Z are planend for first genration of ARM macs.. maybe later better.. but still i'm skeptic - last 2-3 years apple is dramatically improvimg GPU and ML cores, but not that much high performance CPU cores - they are more investing into efficiency (ag making low performance cores more power efficient), and performance improvemenrs are mase more in GPU/ML area..
that's why 2D/3D software and machine learning / AR is more visible in their demos than audio apps...
I would be happy to be wrong, but i don't see good future for us, for music apps, at least in next 2-3 years... stagnation, just slow increase of performance...
One Chip inside the iPad and
4 or 8 inside the Mac,
Same chip but a bunch of them in the Mac?!?
The chips inside iPads are multicore.
Well. like said it also has already 16GB RAM in the developer kit mac mini. It could also be higher clocked or whatever and i think at least it would be the coming A14-X bla bla chip in the first ready for the crowd machine.
Not sure.
Maybe more problematic are things i see already discussed by developers.
Things like that the new machines will maybe not support OpenGL, which is deprecated by Apple. Most VST3 plugins use it.
I would be very surprised if the A12Z is in a shipping Mac.
The developer kits for the Intel transition had Pentiums in them. No shipping Mac ever used a Pentium.
And the Dev kits had to be sent back to Apple and couldn’t be used to run the release OS.
I will go one step further. I’ll bet you a ham sandwich that the shipping Macs won’t have A12Z chips. :-)
Logic will come to iOS next week!.......Not.....Also no X-code and no FCPX.
So the rumors were all just about the ARM macs. Who was that guy said 100% sure, lol.
I bet with you.
It will at least outperform any iOS device and when the iPhone gets an A14 it must be much more powerful as a current A12-Z.
It should have also options with more RAM (at least 64GB) and maybe even dedicated GPU on top (not sure about that since graphic was the main thing they showed).
I wished they had shown a Logic project to compare it.
I never bought the Xcode on Mac rumor. I can't even see why that would be a good thing. Who in their right mind would try to do any serious development on an iPad? I mean, maybe some scripting, but the stuff you do now in Xcode? I can't imagine that.
Better Playgrounds support (on both iPad and Mac), would be really nice for experiments and prototyping though.
I just realized that Apple finally put the knob to 11.

macOS 11.
Maybe they follow with a Logic 11 crossplatform next
Indeed Big Sur looks like iOS.
When they all count the OS i was ready that they remove all the first letters and call it just the OS for all platforms. One day......
The 100% sure guy said within the next year not at WWDC. When apple announces official silicon macs and the new iPad Pro we surely will know more.
They say that I should get me fourteen and I say no no no
I've been through the list of upcoming video sessions...
One [edit ... ok, maybe two] music making app related session.
