Is it just me or there a bunch of missing presets? If I view by genre I only have up to J or Jazz. No rock or pop presets.
Before someone screams that it sucks...There is a bug messing up the audio on the internal iPad speakers output, making it sound horrible. Most likely courtesy iOS 7.1. The 3.5mm out is not affected by this bug, and most likely not the 30pin/lightning either.
@Wayni
I have the same (up to jazz). But perhaps that's all? I mean, there are no Death Metal or 80s Heavy Metal presets either.

Probably not a huge problem, I guess most won't be mastering on the internal speakers ;-)
I know nothing about mastering, but fair price for what seems like a pro product, so I'm in. Now I hope I can make my mixes stand out a bit more, especially from Gadget which currently seriously lacks in the EQ department

Yea no hopefully not lol, but not the point though.
In Auria this same, internal speaker, behavior pointed to a more serious issue where iOS 7.1 had introduced changes to coreaudio again, causing audio files at certain kHz getting corrupted, or in best case just good/bad audio output depending on the interface used. So who knows what could happen here, but hopefully Positive Grid are on top of it.

Currently using Auria and Fabfilter at the moment for iOS mastering, but I'm curious to try these and compare them for sure. Looks like I wasn't picked for the beta, so it will have to wait until I get enough free cash to buy the others just for comparison sake unfortunately. Will post on the forums here if I get to that point!
Really nice! It just lacks an Exciter
By the way, this app works just beautifully to process single instruments and vocals (eg smash a drumloop up with the multiband compressor inside an Audiobus chain, or add a dash of reverb and EQ to an acoustic guitar and so on). So don't get too stuck at the "mastering" bit if your trying to decide wether to buy it or not, in the end it is a modular multi effects unit. And a really really nice one at that:)
I'm new to the mastering apps. How does this stack up to Audio Mastering? Seems like something cool to learn but $20 is steep for an introductory price. AM is cheaper and looks like it has the same functionality.
It seems the first few reviewers are disappointed?
Which reviews?
@ChrisG said:
Chris are you doing any of that real time? If so how was the latency?
I beta tested it and also have audio mastering. They do similar jobs differently, both have their merits. I used final touch to master my album and was pleased.
Watching this for more reviews. Prob pick it up end of the month.

I used a very simple acoustic drums loop, your basic 1-2-3-4 kick, hihat and snare to try things out. Did it in Auria via IAA. Record buffer etc at lowest possible setting everywhere. I tried lots of various settings in the multiband compressor module, and it seemed very tight and responsive here. Same with each other module, fast and tight response, Using everything at once, maxing it out with all 16 EQ bands, all compression bands and so on didn't have any negative impact on the response/latency here.
All that said, I used a pair of really cheap AKG headphones that is not in anyway intended to be used for any production/studio use. And waxy ears.
Also, this is the very first app that have made my iPad warm, like "Hm this can't be good"-warm, around the GPU/CPU part. It does use a lot of lines when drawing the wave spectrums in the EQ and compressor module, and I think PG perhaps went a little overboard here? A graphical look more akin to the spectrum analyzer in FabFilters pro-q would probably ease up on the CPU/GPU. And it loves your batteries btw, dropping quite fast on the Air (but hey, as long as it sounds good I guess:)..
Looks very much like Ozone, which I love (using it right now!) But the main issue for me would be the headphone output on the iPad and my mobile monitoring system. I currently travel and make music on the iPad using a good pair of in ear buds. Good enough for mixing, but I wouldn't wanna master on them. At home I use Audition and Ozone through my trusty old DAC and a nice pair of speakers and cans. Still, it looks like a useful tool for effects with an interface I recognise, so I might bite anyway!

Me too.Still not sure if i get this one or Audio Mastering. Are there manuals for both apps somewhere? How accurate are the analyzers working?I have a tinitus at 4,2 khz,so thats an area i have to take care very well when (pre)mixing my stuff.
@crabman Manual for Final touch http://www.positivegrid.com/mastering-help/ , Can't find the manual for the Audio Mastering app, it's embedded into the app.
Thanks,i was looking earlier this day on the PG side but was only looking on their product and support page.I found another very important (to me)point:AM is just 7 MB big while FT is 70 MB big.I want to use it in Cubasis and not standalone so taking care about Ram s not unimportant....
@crabman , It comes with a full 3-4 min long 24 bit track that it loads on the first start-up. You can delete it from the track/audio menu. It doesn't load that into RAM. Even though the installed app size is 80mb, and Audio Mastering about 10mb installed, opening an empty instance of Final Touch dropped my RAM by around 25mb, opening an empty instance of Audio Mastering dropped my RAM by around 235mb. That a pretty massive difference. I would have thought it would be the other way around, given that Final Touch uses more eye candy and shiny graphics etc.
So the amount of RAM an empty/clear instance of each app USES :
Final Touch 25-30mb
Audio Mastering 230-235mb
(iPad Air iOS 7.1)
Now, I have no clue what these numbers could change to once you start activating effects, loading audio files etc (iOS and RAM is tricky to get a grip on so..). But it certainly looks like Positive Grid did some slick programming here in regards to handling the RAM.
Thanks again for the detailed report.Any other opinions from new FT users welcome :)When can we expect the soundtestroom comparison video? ;-)
As mentioned above I have no experience in mastering, but I ran a Gadget mix down through FT and was able get a much nicer sounding recording out of it. Especially the Stereo Imaging plugin worked wonders in creating a wider more professional sounding mix. Money well spent.
Using AudioCopy it's easy to export your mix from Gadget to FT or I guess you could also setup via AudioBus for realtime mixing :-)
Btw,how is the support from PG?I dont own any other apps from them but i dont like to support companies (anymore) that dont answer to emails, ignoring suggestions and need forever to fix bugs (if ever). The Audio Mastering guy seems responsive and open for suggestions though.
After messing around with using it as a plugin in Auria via IAA, I've found that 8-9/10 times it's unusable due to the Final Touch interface slowing to a crawl when in the EQ or comp module with the spectrum analyzer graphics. Obviously a bug (iPad Air, iOS 7.1). I really really hope PG are on top of it.
Didn't any beta testers caught this?
With Audiobus it works just fine, the spectrum analyzers does not slow down the UI. So it's a bug or two somewhere inside this mess -> IAA/Auria/FinalTouch.
Anyone tried it with Cubasis or any other hosts as IAA yet?
Positive grid's support is excellent. As far as the IAA thing, no, I did not catch this because I'm not using final touch in this way, I export the mix from auria and then work with it on its own. I'm treating it as a completely separate process from the mix. In fact, I have pretty much avoided IAA altogether as I've yet to really have a good experience with it (I think it's a mess, I think audiobus worked well because it was developed by people who understood what musicians would want. I don't hate apple, but I feel like the audiobus team had their ears to the ground in knowing what was needed). That's just me though.
@Flo26 The IAA list name is "Mastering" for some reason (so not final touch)
@mrufino1 Yep, sorry. What I meant was that PG had so many testers that at least someone would have had to tried it in this constellation (iOS 7.1, Auria, IAA).
Final touch looks like a must have. But Im not in an urgent need for another mastering app at the moment, so I think I am gonna wait for a sale!
I dont need FT in Auria (there are enough tools for a nice mastering)but cubasis lacks any good Dynamics and i would only buy it if it runs smooth as an IAA there.

I'm very interested in this. Would love to know how it stacks up to those. I've spent a lot of money on those guys already, but I love spending money on apps for some reason and I'm just chomping at the bit to give Positive Grid more of it.
Hey - So Cubasis IAA seems pretty rock solid, although that's just 5 - 10 mins testing during lunch
Auria seems a lot more glitchy - I have had it working OK on a channel with a low CPU project (it was the only FX) - but for the life of me I can't get it to work on the Master FX channel.. simply a n go. Multiple reboots
I emailed and facecracked support about dropbox not working (still in dev mode)
When it works is does sound great, but seems better in Audiobus and Cubasis or standalone at the mo.
7.1 mini retina
The Final Touch/IAA/Auria issue was confirmed by another beta tester over at the Auria forum. He's reported it to PG, and also the wrong IAA list name (which should be Final Touch).
