  • Glad to see the collaboration, @blueveek and @j_liljedahl. The color differences will help quite a bit but I'd love to be able to label with text each MIDI node. I often forget which sequence is which in AUM. It's not clear to me if those little numbers in each node are auto-assigned based on which channel and slot they are in or if the user can use their own text.

  • I'm so happy, @blueveek, that this app will solve all my workflow problems and allow me to finish all of my half-baked sketches.

    To change the label text:
    -open that Atom instance
-long tap on the top bar where the current name is (you’ll get a context name pop-up window)
    -change to whatever you like

-it will show up as a midi source with your new name included

Yup, implemented in 2.0 as well! ;)

    Excellent, thanks!

  • Are you sure that using Atom into LK will not open a vortex somewhere in the space?

I'm really enjoying all these conversations about improving workflows!

Wanted to share a quick teaser of what @j_liljedahl and me are cooking: support for custom node colors in AUM, so you can identify each instance.

Nice Idea ... and probably very useful in some occasions ,,, thanks !!

But in other moments the „slick“ and less colorful look of AUM is very relaxing for the eyes ...

So ... +1 for the first screenshot with the „dimmed“ colors ,,, and/or it would be great to give the user the option to choose between - classical (grey) - medium colored (dimmed) - or full color as background for the nodes ...

Yes good point. I think there should be a pref at least to support other hosts that haven't implemented this feature yet.

    Nice... :D

  • Pre-purchased Atom last week, hoping my little contribution helps keep things moving. I hope this isn't like Drambo where it keeps dragging and dragging as all of you lot keep loading on request after request!

But look how Drambo turned out...it's a masterpiece.

How were you able to “pre-purchase” this version of Atom? Do you mean you bought the current version in anticipation?

    Yep.

  • Frick I’ll just pay 100$ now so we can get soon. Pretty please 🙏😀

    soon come ...

  • I may have missed this somewhere but will this be a new app/update/IAP/bundle?

I think it was mentioned, well, it will be a free update... I think... Maybe we can send donations...

  • This won’t be a popular opinion but given how much blueveek has overhauled the app I think he should release a new version rather than a free update. He deserves to be compensated for all his hard work IMO

  • I agree. It’s a new app. I would definitely prefer that to an app with tons of IAP to “unlock” features.

  • I don’t think @blueveek ever said it would be a free update and if he did then he should take that back!

This should be a new app and if we have to save up for it then so be it.

As a very happy Atom 1 owner and supporter, I will be choosing to pay full price for Atom 2 even if Blueveek offers a heavily-discounted (or free) upgrade pathway.

You wouldn’t believe how much time and effort has been poured into this new version.

I’d encourage everyone else to choose the option that’s right for them*.

*note - I say this in a completely non-judgmental way.

I was curious about that too. Lol. I searched App Store immediately after I read that post.

It's definitely encouraging to see so many people interested in supporting continued development. To be frank, iOS app development is an unsustainable business in my case, at least for now, unless there's a planet I could move to where pocket change is enough to live by :) Trying to squeeze out more money out of this with IAPs is just not worth the effort and hit to user experience.

I'm lucky to have a few incredible people helping out again, just like they did with version 1 – from artwork and iconography to video tutorials, buying controllers for testing and feature implementation and so on. I'm not sure how many apps on the App Store can claim to be built with passion as the actual primary motivator, but Atom is definitely one of them.

To be more concrete, I'm still debating what the best way to release this is, and I'm now thinking a separate app with a launch-day "free-upgrade" bundle is the easiest approach, at least technically (barring some App Store limitations that I don't know about yet). Rest assured that I'll research this more and will update y'all beforehand.

In other news, the beta is progressing, we're now at the 12th iteration (for whatever that means). I'm now trying to squeeze out as much performance as I can out of this so it never takes away precious CPU from other plugins. My iPad Pro can comfortably do 500+ Atom instances, and an old Air 2 pushes 64 in the most recent tests (a full Launchpad!), with a few hiccups that I hope to completely iron out before final release. And if there's memory pressure, Atom instances won't crash – they'll nuke the UI in the background with the audio engine kernel still running, and spring back to life as soon as you open a window/ make an instance visible again.

Apart from performance, it's all about workflow. Controller support isn't just about mapping pads: it's full push support so Launchpad know about all the Atoms, their individual trigger settings, play and arm states and so on. We're adding various trigger modes (like "one shot" and a new one called "gate"), more non-destructive editing niceties, rewind back in time to original as-played versions, and a new thing we're calling "Phrases" – a collection of multiple patterns per clip that's can be switched on the fly (though this isn't automated yet), remembers settings like loop interval, time signature etc., and is helpful when iterating on a melody or idea. Check out this screenshot:

So yeah, I promised you an update and here it is. Automation panel is going to see quite a bit of love next.

  • @blueveek lots of work being done on this updated version of Atom. I appreciate all of the thought and work you’ve put into this.
