Mellotron app comparison

  • @DD829 basically, we can make anything and everything available, if Streetly have a copy master of it, and it's unencumbered by licensing (e.g the apparently staggering Tony Levin bass tapes are not available for anything other than an actual tape replay machine) - so why not use this thread to accumulate requests, the top 8 will be on the next in-app purchase. Works better than just guessing what folks want ...

Actual mellotron samples instead of transfered copy masters. ;)

  • Biro choir is already on the list, so we are going for the top 7.... Hahahah!

@mrufino1 at a coffee shop a few months ago banging away on my ipad, I got into a conversation with another guy who makes music on his ipad. We started talking apps and I showed him a few he hadn't heard of before and without even the slightest grimace he asked me to enter my itunes account on his ipad so he could download the apps.

No kidding? That's crazy. And to enter your account info to his iPad no less? I've gifted people apps before ( through the App Store, the legal way!) if I knew it would benefit them and they were hard up for cash. It's kind of sad that an app that's way underpriced is still considered valueless. Except for flappy bird, in which some silly people (I'm being nice) are buying iPads with it installed for $1000...by the way, my daughter's mini retina has it installed, anyone bidding? ;-)
Anyway, back to mellotron, a far more fun topic.

  • For me, any and/or all of these...

    Chamberlin flute
    Chamberlin harpsichord
    Chamberlin electric harpsichord

    MK I Piano Upper Octaves

    M300A flute
    M300A piano
    M300A harpsichord
    M300A organ
    M300A cello/violins split

    M400 Mixed Brass B

Ian Mcdonald flute (I think this has a use for actual mellotrons only agreement though)

  • Maybe this will need to be a 16-voice double pack ...

I don't have anything to contribute except thanks for the intelligent discussion and especially the comparison recordings, which are so revealing!

My attempt at Popsike using the Mellotronics app.

Excellent, like a little lost psych gem from 1967!

  • Fwiw, the ThumbJam Mellotron tones sounds pretty darn good to me. But I haven't tried the dedicated apps.

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  • Inbuilt thumbjam tron sounds only feature some notes sampled, rest are stretched.

Ps: they can be made to sound a step more authentic by selecting edit, sample, then putting the key release to minimum.

Yeah, I did that as a compromise for space back in the days when iOS device resources were a lot more limited. Perhaps I should now make full versions available too from the same collection.

Ps: they can be made to sound a step more authentic by selecting edit, sample, then putting the key release to minimum.

Good idea, although would the minimum really make it realistic? Surely the mechanism on those things has some small natural decay. I'm happy to change the default if you guys have specific suggestions.

  • edited April 2014

The key on the mellotron keyboard just mashed the play head aganst the tape. No decay on release that I know of other than reverb added afterwards.

  • Another reason to have some decay on a ThumbJam patch depends on how you play it, if you drag around on the touch screen, too short of a release sounds pretty bad. But if tapping a lot or using a keyboard controller, lowering the release time is probably a good idea.

Think minimum release possible on thumbjam is 10ms, that works perfect for authenticity. The note should cut off abruptly when releasing a key/note, but of course not everyone will like or want that. It's an easy edit for those that do. :)

I loaded all of 35 notes of each of the leisureland samples in to thumbjam, great stuff!

Also loaded MKII samples from Pinder CD-ROM.

Thumbjam is one of my fav apps. :)

  • I did this demo with Pinder sounds in Thumbjam.

I'm lowering the minimum release in the next version since I fixed a long standing envelope issue, fwiw.

That's what I think I'll do and put those up as alternative in-app downloads.

  • @PiSynth, any update on the next IAP? We just tracked the Chamberlin "Female Choir", and the "Russian Choir". You'll hear this on a major release this Fall.

This is reason enough to give up the Biro Choir!

Tell Martin that we've only got one life to live!

  • Googling Mike Dickson got me here: http://www.mikedickson.org.uk/mellotronworks/

    Wow @ those recordings.

  • I discovered those MD recordings about a month ago and have been running to them on and off since.

  • I contributed some bass samples to one of his projects a few years ago...

  • We need half speed now...and master tapes.

Wondering, Do any iPad apps actually use the most desirable Streetly samples?

Been using Sampletron in the studio rig but, understand the Streetly stuff is said to be the most accurate of the many options. Not able to pay for M Tron Pro + the Streetly samples these days.

Both of these claim to use the original Streetly tapes:

    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mellotron-xl/id716634619

I use Mellowsound from Fingerlab. They sampled their own Mellotron which means it has all the idiosyncrasies of their particular model rather than looking for the "cleanest" versions:

  • Streetlytron? Bought that app. Will use when I make an official song. You can set mod wheel to mix between 3 voices and instruments.

The Mellowsound is interesting. Thanks for mentioning.

Re; Streetlytron, I was mostly interested in this one. I can say though FWIW ...I asked omenie about the samples they used for StreetlyTron. Their response was,
...“The tapes are somewhat different in that the M-tron tapes are sampled through the Skellytron, so contain an imprint of the transfer function of a real M400 tape head. Otherwise, identical.”

  • "Both Caustic's PCM synth and Sir Sampleton, feature a flute sound."
