Another thing I saw mentioned online was the potential for people with poor hearing to use these as kind of hearing aids - I think they could be very useful for that, it's incredible the level of detail they pick up!
Now I need to try listening to music on these - that guy had some very useful things to say in that review, and if the sound stage is as wide as he says, that's a serious achievement for an iem at these prices.
Caveat: I’ve not had any other noise cancelling headphones, so nothing to compare these to.
But I do use the noise cancellation, particularly when checking social media where there’s a lot of audio I want to play, while my partner listens to the radio in the same room, and it works pretty well for me. Yes, I can still hear a little of the radio (a tinny sounding residue), but it gets rid of enough to be able to listen at sane volumes without having to crank it up to drown out what I don’t want to hear. However, without a good seal it’s very much worse, so maybe check the fit of the tips if you’re finding it almost unnoticeable.
The noise cancelling is actually pretty good. I’ve compared them to the Bose QC 25s on an aircraft and the Senns were much better.
Interesting - I wonder why I'm not noticing this when using them in AUM. And u wonder why this very thorough reviewer who's clearly a huge audiophile said the noise cancelling was non existent... Weird
You should be able to instantly hear the noise cancelling kicking in when you activate it.
^ This. Which makes me wonder if something is different in the firmware update? Pure speculation, but there has to be some reason why there’s such a difference.
Interesting. When I connected them to my lightning ipad which is on os15.6, the sennheiser app said the firmware was up to date, btw
Just to rule out another factor, I’ve just tried them with AUM, and the cancellation works here. You can hear it kicking in and out when you switch it on and off.
I think a lot of the issues with sound quality (like many in-ear monitors) are solved by ensuring a really good seal from the tips you use. Personally I always replace any standard silicon tips with Comply foam ones.
Do you think there is a way to connect the Ambeos to the Rode interface too, with a lightning to 3.5mm audio adapter? I can picture me using the Ambeos through one mic in, and my lav mic through the other mic in, to record voice over with ambience for outdoor meditations.
Absolutely no idea! If no-one here knows for sure, probably best to ask Sennheiser support, that would be an excellent idea if it worked. I think for outdoor meditwtion
Good idea. I'll get in touch with Sennheiser.
Done. I'll feedback with any info I get from them.
Thank you. I just placed my order.
One last thing - if you decide to buy more than one set I'd recommend you open any 'spares' and update the firmware just in case it gets taken off the website...
Never bought Comply tips as I always used to prefer triple-flange tips. These days I don’t want to use anything that deep. Generally speaking, however, I've not had problems finding good fit. I've just accumulated so many spares over the years that I always find something that works.
I can't stand any eartips that go too deep. Properly fitting silicon tips are definitely my preference.
I do like the idea of foams, in terms of softness. I just have bad memories of all the squishing-before-fitting frustrations. The comply ones (At least those compatible with the AMBEO) seem to be in an altogether more suitable shape than the ones I tried
I finally ordered mine. They arrive on Sunday. Bring on the binaural soundscapes and field recordings.
Nice!
I'm quietly excited, as I'm staying at a really quiet place in the country, with a tiny river running through the land. I plan on some exploring of the locale with the Ambeo on.
Meanwhile, I have a technical question for everyone here:
I've got the Anker lightning to USB-C audio adapter on it's way, for hooking it up to my iPad.
But I'm also looking for a good quality lightning female to 3.5mm mic and audio / audio adapter but I'm having difficulty finding one (any at all, not just good quality). It's for connecting the Ambeo headset to my Tascam D100 Mk3 as well as my MacBook Pro.
Maybe I can use a Lightning to USB-C adapter with the MacBook Pro, thinking about it.
Has anyone got any bright ideas for the best way to connect these to my Tascam? What options am I missing?
Me too… it should show up on Monday.
Me too. I looked for one but then I started to think what’s needed.
When we see adapters we see plastic around connectors (male and female options)
But what’s needed are chips to convert signals:
For example… that little $9 adapter Apple invented to keep folks like us buying the new
Devices without headphone ports look like this in an X-ray view:
There’s a chip on the lightning “male” end of the adapter:
It’s a chip Apple designed to solve the impending insurrection for a $9 cost.
I suspect they would loose money on this product if we didn’t buy millions of iPhones
And iPads and then we loose them and buy more.
The Apple chip even has a part number on it:
So… to plug the Ambeo Smart headset into another audio device using a min-phone jack
Someone needs to design an adapter with lightning female on one and and male 1/8” phono jack
(Or similar audio standard… 1/4”) and make an application specific chip for the DAC processing.
Anker probably won’t see the required market to design, built and distribute such an adapter
For the benefit of Ambeo to cut the apple devices out of the use case.
NOTE: Ambeo designed these headphones with a $300 price point and we are buying them at pennies on the dollar for under $50… it was NOT a successful product and they will stop when the backlog runs out, IMHO.
Anyway, I do need the Ambeo to USB-C since I have a new iPad. And the entire user base of
Lightning based iPhones and iPads will also see the need for adapting their Lightning out-board
Hubs and Audio box and MIDI hardware to a USB-C port. Millions of us… Apple won’t do it
But Anker makes these chip-based products and sells them for $50-100 and folks like us buy them.
Maybe. Depends on the design of the chip and what it thinks it’s communicating with. I hope this does work too.
Getting a Lightning-based headphones to connect to audio is a tricky design… I’m wondering if
A wireless audio link between a phone/iPad and another phone/iPad that’s connected to a
USB-C or Lightning Audio interface for the Tascan.
ok, you guys made me buy the Ambeo finally. The Anker Adapter wasn‘t available in Germany, thus I bought this

, and it works as well…
just to let you know.
cheers, t
I received my Ambeos today. To summarize, I’m pleased.
I’ll definitely be looking for some foam tips that somebody else here mentioned. Aside from the price drop, the selling point for me was the noise cancellation. After I finally got a good seal in my ears, the noise cancellation was really obvious once engaged. I was standing in an area of my home where the oil-burning furnace is loudest. But I can see how it’s easy to mistake the noise cancellation as non-existent, because I initially thought the same. I even thought the bass was lacking.
But as it’s already been mentioned in this thread, it really is all about the seal, and I cannot maintain a good seal, even tho my ears are clean and free of oily wax. Thus the comment about trying different tips.
I’d also like to add that these are my first experience with Sennheiser and just, wow. I’m not used to such crispy detail in the upper range, yet it remains not harsh👍
Also, there are a handful Sennheiser apps on the store, a few of them with identical logos. Don’t do what I did and DL the wrong one and wonder why the device isn’t discoverable. It’s the one with Apogee also written on it.
Great find @Krupa and thanks to you all for the helpful bits of information you have provided!
Oh wow, that is something I can find here. In China I can't get the ambeos, would have to order from Japan, and would take up to a month to arrive, seems so ridiculous. And these would be half the price. And these will work with android by the look of it. At least with xiaomi. I understand that android devices also need different adapters. So they allow both recording and listening in stereo? Edit: according to the shop they do work stereo in and out but are only for apple. Seems they also have a model that allows you to charge your iOS device too while connecting the Ambeos. Holy cow! Would be a game changer for me if so.
OK! Next mission to try some different tips, cheers!
Me too re the charging whilst using. I was wondering if I can use the Apple Camera Connection Kit to charge through my phone whilst using the Ambeos. As for charging whilst using the Anker or other USB-C adapter, I'm also interested.
Can anyone comment on which model of Comply tips to use on the Ambeos?
I usually use InAirs, having tried both, but it's helpful to know the sizing, so I can sort some whilst my Ambeos are on their way.
It's the 400 series you need - https://www.complyfoam.com/products/comply-400-series
For Inairs, it's the Air 2 - https://getinairs.com/products/AIR2?variant=17825177043017
With the comply 400, which do people prefer, the regular one or the round one?
