First time using MagicDeathEye Compressor and 6144 EQ!

This is also my first project using the amazing Cykle advanced step sequencer which is so much fun to play with. Really interesting generative things can emerge from this little gem of an app!

In this piece, I tried to push it by adding instruments and parts that would cover a broad frequency range and to see how MDES would handle gluing at all together. Ended up having to remove a couple things to keep my DSP just under 100 and to keep things from breaking up. but I’m really happy with the end results.

This is also pretty much a concoction of most of the new toys I’ve purchased over the last week or so given the BF sales and such. It’s my first project with Cykle advanced step sequencer. Here I’m using it to drive Tal-U-No-Lx. Several instances of Atom sequencing other things; AudioKit’s Sub Bass 808 bass line and melodic parts sequenced in Continua synth and AudioKit’s House: Mark I Electromechanical Piano. Topped it off by fooling around with the GeoSWAM Cello in GeoShred 5. Effects by Kosmonaut Delay and RatShackReverb 3. EQ’d each track with DDMF’s 6144, and applied MagicDeathEye Stereo Compressor on the master bus.

Again, I’m really pleased with the way MDES smooths everything out, and was especially surprised by how good it sounded in the car! DDMF’s 6144 EQ was used on each track and I love the sounds you can get by dialing in the different frequency bands.

Anyway, I hope you guys give it a listen and let me know what you think! Leave me some feedback on how it sounds through your speakers or headphones. Any tips, pointers, or advice on using this pair of tools (MDES and 6144) are welcomed and appreciated!

  • Oh crap, I didn’t even think about how YouTube would affect the sound quality.

  • Would SoundCloud be any different?

What Audio Quality did you upload?

    Current hearing this with headphones.
    Sounds great to me

That’s a good question! I guess I need to look at what the audio properties are for screen recordings on the iPad versus what I would get by just using AUM’s recorder, or CB3 and doing a proper mixdown.

But at the end of the day, if it sounds great, it sounds great right? Could it sound better though?

Thanks for listening and leaving your thoughts!

    I'm seriously impressed by this.

Would be interesting to hear this without the effects / EQ / compressor.

Do you have more stuff, SoundCloud, BandCamp, Spotify, or something?

Thank you! I suppose I could re-record another version without those things for a comparison. What do you think?

I’ve got more stuff. Like I mentioned though, this is my first time using these DDMF tools, and I’ve never really used any kind of mastering tool like MDES. Most of my iOS stuff is right there on my YT channel, with some on my SoundCloud. I also have some old material on Sound_click_ that was way before iOS. Oh and I have a box of cassette tapes from the 80’s when I was younger and really had no clue what audio quality was lol.

  • Even accounting for Youtube audio quality, your video sounds pretty good to me.

I am also happy to see that the CPU meter rarely strays above 60%, after hearing about how CPU hungry MDE Stereo compressor is supposed to be.

Now, just to make us happy, could you provide a proper WAV or M4A version of this?
And be it only for the comparision.

I could. What’s the best way to post/upload it though?

I think I’m going to try piping the audio tracks into CB3 (if my iPad can handle it without taking a dump)

  • Shared from Onedrive. Please let me know if this worked and if there’s any difference in perceived audio quality.

    Whatever you are capable of.

DropBox, OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud, or SoundCloud or BandCamp (the last two will probably reduce the quality without payed account).

  • Good clarity. Don’t imagine SoundCloud would be better. Very nice groove. Hope you didn’t have to work too hard over Thanksgiving!

  • So thanks for motivating me @tja. Normally, I’d never record an AUM jam twice. But now that I’ve got it recorded in CB3, I can do a little more with it, like maybe practice a solo/lead part with either a GeoSWAM instrument or maybe a guitar track. (It’s kinda funny doing an “improv” lead part while screen recording)

Thanks Mike! Try that Onedrive link I posted above ^^^ lemme know what you think. It doesn’t have the lead SWAM part like the screen recording does. I’m going to add something else now that I have it recorded in CB3.

I’m glad it’s over! Haven’t had much time for music making though I did manage to tinker around with a few things today.

I’ve been wanting to work on some of those collaboration projects, and I will, in time.

  • Oh! I don’t know if anyone noticed, but something else I’ve learned how to do today while working on this piece, is using an instance of Atom to control the pattern change in Drum Computer! There’s two patterns here, one with the cymbal hits and one without. A simple pair of midi notes in Atom switches them back and forth in sequence.

I love having discovered this! Will definitely have to expand on this capability in future projects.

  • Nice job... really rich tones coming through my budget headphones.
The kick is doing a job on my sleep deprived head. But in a good way.

Since I'm not using IOS nothing is preventing me from cranking up the volume.

  • this is great man!

Thanks @McD! I’m happy to hear MDES is doing what it’s supposed to do then! Mind if I ask; what are you listening to it on, since you mentioned it’s not iOS?

You're far more talented than me, both musically and technically.

The YouTube version adds some variations that hit harder than the WAV version, but that was to be expected when recreating a jam.

BTW, it is a crime to not record those - and upload them somewhere!
Please consider some account to upload your stuff. Would be great :)

Aww thanks, I’m just learning along the way.

Here’s a YT playlist of most of my recent iOS screen capture jams. One of these days, I’ll do a proper mixdown of some of these and get them uploaded to my SoundCloud.

Thanks man! The fun was in Cykle’s generative randomness, as well as some probability settings on the snare in Drum Computer. It another subtle thing where I applied the probability to the snare on the second off beat on the first pattern, then the first off beat on the second pattern.

Added to my watch next list (but probably starting tomorrow).

I checked both the YT and the WAV versions in AUM, and both seem to clip.
Did you add a final Limiter?
There were some recommendations for uploading to YouTube, will add them here if I can find them ahain

It should be possible to fix this, for future projects.

You know, I was wondering if I should grab that DDMF Limiter while it’s on sale.

MacBook Pro with $50 headphones that have large magnets (i.e. they can loud). Not necessarily flat but lot's of bass. I bought them because they are bluetooth and support
a cable to a second headset so 2 people can watch TV with Bluetooth for the wireless connection. Great idea that we rarely use but I use them to watch TV when others are sleeping.
