Favorite Synth for Sound Design?

Just curious to see what are some people’s favorite synths for sound design. I’m relatively still new to designing sounds, although I generally know my way around a synth. Started learning synthesis in Serum and now just started design some patches in Bleass Alpha Synth, which has been a blast (and I’ve done my fair share of playing with Drambo as well) but I’d like to hear what everyone else usually goes to for sound design!

mela is a great one, and the developer is very committed to it, i find myself messing with mela daily.

also Zeeon is one i always turn to. the sound is so good on it and with the layers and matrix it is one of the most versatile synths that ive spent significant time with.

  • LayR

    Drambo

    OdysseI

    Aparillo

    Zeeon

    Moog Model 15

  • SynthScaper, Mitosynth, FRMS. If subtractive synthesis is your thing, DRC is fantastic and those madmen from @sinosoidal (Imaginando) have a ton of YouTube videos up where they recreate sounds from popular tracks.

Oh nice! I just got this on the holiday sale but haven't played around with it too much. A little disappointed in the sound, although I can't put my finger on why I don't like it, but I'll try to give it another shot!

Mela's fun! I've only dabbled a little bit but I really like that synth and the effects with it!

Yeah I really like Zeeon too! It's nice a straightforward and has that beautiful BeepStreet sound.

LayR is a little intimidating to me, when I first got it, I couldn't even figure out how to pull up the preset menu lmao... And I've only used Aparillo and Moog Model 15 for presets but those are on my list of apps to dive into. And that list is LONG lol

DRC is one of my favorite synths. It has that old analogue sound to it, which I love. and FRMS is great too, although haven't even touched the sound design part of it yet. But I absolutely will.

The LayR manual is worth spending half an hour with.

  • Zeeon. I have a bank that BeepStreet were thinking of including as an IAP, but I think it’s dropped off their to do list.

  • Obsidian. Bad news, it's the internal synth of Nanostudio 2, so no AU. Good news - it has a plethora of various synthesis types (from subtractive, FM, wavetable, a multisampler, etc) and barely eats up resources. Bonus - you can use all of the other aforementioned AU synths within it.

  • Zeeon is a favorite
Tal u no xl is my crush
Drambo with all its chenanigans is my partner
    Dreaming of Aparillo
Mela and Poison the ones to go to party
Mood and Model D you take on a proper date
Factory is that weird friend you’ll end up at 12 am the next morning contemplating the next club
Phosphor, OB-Xd, OPL, Phasemaker, Bassalicious, Bass808, PureSynth, Kronecker, Retro Piano, TroubleMaker and Unique the pose.
Glitch all like the Ape stuff for long weekends

  • IceGear Lagrange. The wide range of oscillator types and routing configurations make it a blast!

  • I think I prefer "Found Designs". Preset surfing is addicting.

  • The synth into Nanostudio v2 is really really great!!

  • AddStation for me. So tweakable and intuitive once you get your head around it! Sounds great too...

  • BLEASS Alpha is my favorite synth overall right now.

  • edited December 2020

Ease of use: Bleass Alpha, Continua, Synthmaster
Lofi/FM sounds: KQ Dixie, Phosphor, OPL, Phasemaker, Ruismaker OG/FM, Icegear synths
Classic VA sounds: Tal Uno-LX, Ob-xd, Sunrizer
More experimental: miRack, need to more with Drambo

I use a lot of fx and automation, so half of the sound design comes from that.

I need to spend more time with Virsyn synths, but from sound design side you can do a lot with AudioLayer and using single cycle waveforms.

  • Factory for real sounds

    iVCS3 for unreal sounds

  • If you are into Serum, SynthMaster One is the closer you can get to serum.

SynthMaster Two is expected to be the closest to Serum.

    Drambo’s Wavetable imports Serum files!

  • FRMS and AddStation are the one I've been really hooked on so far and made about 70-100 of my own presets on each. Weird enough: both having issues with exporting your own presets. For FRMS a fix is coming soon and AddStation just released a fix that didn't work :(

To me, Zeeon has the right balance of ‘more than standard modulation options, but not too much to overwhelm’. The PPG synths, for example, though fantastic sounding, paralyzed me with a million layers of inconsequential details. I do not need to be editing 64 or more individual partials.

Model 15 is a good one and pretty straightforward. Also since it’s a direct replica of the hardware, you can find a bunch of sound design YouTube videos for it, Reverb has a series and use model D often. There are also free Patchbooks about the internet, they show you where to place each knob, to program a patch. They help when starting out.

I also like Poison-202, with the patch randomization. Rando til you like the sound the tweak.

DRC is pretty nice for sound design as well.

  • Phaseplant is awesome for sound design

I truly trust your judgement sir. Lagrange is now in my collection!

  • Quanta and Tardigrain for me, those are the only two I’ve really enjoyed farting around with.

On desktop I guess Grain in Reason. You can kinda see where I’m going with this lol...

  • Yeah for sample based sound exploration I like Samplr, Tardigrain, Quanta, and now FRMS. I've been enjoying piping these to multiple Gauss instances to build up organic spaces and textures that I then mix in and out of. Sorry... that wasn't much of a synth answer. For synth stuff I do love Zeeeon and am looking to get into Aparillo and Factory.

  • FRMS is another awesome one but it’s very heavy on the CPU :)
