SynthMaster One is data-based, light weight, can add more tracks and performs well with rapidly repeating notes.
Pure Synth Platinum failed and missed some notes on rapidly repeating notes and it is also heavy on CPU - adding just one or two tracks results in crackles on iPad Pro.
The forum seems to have reached some kind of critical mass. Any time someone asks "Which Synth do you use for.." the answers eventually come back as a nearly complete list of the synths available on iOS.
Having received that list now, the next question must be what are you trying to achieve with your Synth explorations? A certain style or genre of music, a better understanding of synthesis and effects?
Although some musicians may want to study sound design in isolation, I always felt that I couldn't, or didn't want to, separate rhythm and musical content i.e. writing music, from the process of exploring the world of synthesis. To that end I think Gadget, or any of the 'all-in-one' music creation apps, is a great starting point for experimenting with putting together song experiments and ideas quickly. It has a good range of synthesizer types with enough depth to get you going exploring and without a lot of the hassles of getting all the bits wired up together.
ButterSynth is a great synth for sound design/building patches with.
I find programming it much more fun than almost every other iOS synth
Yep back in Dec 2020, I was obsessed with Obsidian. Since then, a lot of iOS synths are great for sound design, especially Buttersynth! If nothing else...Buttersynth.
Zeeon, Drambo, Obsidian have been mentioned already.
I'd like to add NFM for pure FM "joy" and Klevgrand Tomofon for building something different from real-world samples.
According to @Nikolozi, NFM should get its long-awaited update for importing and exporting presets soon.
Agreed on Tomofon. Reception in the thread seemed mixed so I was hesitant but went with my gut and I’m glad I did. Besides ButterSynth, it’s the app I’ve made the most patches with lately. NFM is the only FM app I don’t have but it’s on my list. Mela is my favorite VA on iOS so I’m sure it’s great being that it’s the same dev.
Have all except Twin3 and Woodsynth and they’re top 2 on my synth watchlist as well. I can’t recommend iVCS3 enough. I know model 15 gets brought up a lot but imo iVCS3 is the most authentic analog clone on iOS. Sounds identical.
Favorite Synth for Sound Design?
Yes!
To be serious, as much as I love complicated synth, for sound design, I prefer the easy one like Moog Model D.
phaseplant ,,
but honestly, most of my sound design comes from effects and resampling
have you considered sharing here??
iOS: Butter, Obsidian, Viking
HW: Digitone, Nord Lead2, Model D
For sound design my favourite is still Moog Model 15 but I use other synth too that are on this list.
I was amazed by the sound of Megalit. Sounds like more than an ios app. However I didnt use it for sound design yet.
Tera Pro
Drambo. It’s why I came to iOS. I use other synths for preset tweaking and have been a bit distracted from the main quest by all the affordable innovation. Drambo does it all though and is relatively approachable.
Drambo, Lagrange and Spacecraft.
I don’t Zeeon but since it has the most mentions on this thread i’ll consider buying it.
Woodsynth, Drambo
I'm also going to say Hilda now that it's released and I've had a play with it. Jeez! Crazy good synth!
Almost too good lol. I see it becoming an all time favorite for me. That list is already full of Brams apps 😂
Édit : now Model 15 and Hilda
All the Iceworks synths, Ripplemaker, and BLEASS Omega.
So far Hilda as well! I probably should eventually read the manual lol
😂 this a very good short manual , 6 pages even if you don’t like to read manuals with Hilda manuals it is fast read
Yeah I normally like to go in blind on apps and see what I can figure out on my own! The only time I really needed help was with the ivcs3 and Synclavier lol
This what I did with Hilda go first blind for hours creating and after just add more knowledge : manual, videos demo @Gavinski ….
Watching Gavinski now so I’m about to level up lol
It's Nambu for me.
Drambo is almost infinitely flexible and very satisfying, but I expend many, many times more brainpower thinking of how to wire things up and make them usable. With Nambu I've got almost everything I need accessible from one screen. Tera Pro is similar, but not quite as up-front accessible to me as Nambu.
Honestly it’s kinda crazy how easy Nambu is to navigate considering how much it has going on. All of Icegears apps are kinda like that.
