All these Trump types who have watched their cult fall apart are now trying desperately to blend in with the general population, like ISIS fighters dropping their guns and pretending to be refugees.

But they always tell on themselves what that bogus All politicians are equally bad, amirite?

@BladeRunner you are perfectly welcome to believe what you want and express it. (And you would be perfectly welcome to have abandoned an old intolerant account for a new one in November. If, you know, you were so inclined.)

But those "leftist" countries you're so afraid of: Do you mean modern-day Canada or Norway? Do you mean any nation where there is socialized medicine and not just socialism for agriculture and corporations? Or do you mean "leftist" like Eisenhower-era America?

The nihilism of the Trump supporter who never forgets to call the coronavirus "the Wuhan virus" but seems to think it's not a big deal that his cult leader is directly responsible for HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of preventable deaths...God, it is enraging. I have had to listen to Trumpist complaints of unfairness and endless lying for four years. And now, I'm done.

But I will listen to one last thing:

Please describe how it feels to have linked your IDENTITY to the objectively worst president in the history of the United States — ignoring all evidence, signing on to lie after obvious lie, from the size of the inauguration to "winning in a landslide" despite being absolutely crushed by Biden in the popular vote and easily, handily defeated in the Electoral College? How does it feel to have been encouraged to storm the Capitol to try to subvert the will of the people — and murder a (Trump-supporting) police officer by bludgeoning him with a fire extinguisher — only to have Trump come out a day later, chastened after having his Twitter account frozen, and SELL YOU OUT COMPLETELY because he was afraid that he might be exposed to prosecution?

I would like to hear from the "Fuck your feelings" crowd on that one.

Unfortunately I don’t think it is falling apart. I live in Trump country and they’re out in force putting flags up in their yards and being sure to put full MAGA uniform on before leaving the house.

We need to remind ourselves that many failed attempts at subverting democracy fail repeatedly and then succeed. The so-called moderates in the GOP will decry Trump -- and go to work at a statewide level to make it harder for people that oppose them to vote and redrawing district lines to ensure that (as is the case today) that GOP voters are disproportionately powerful in any state that has a GOP legislature and governor. They will insist at a national level that uncertainty about the vote is a natural consequence of lax voting laws and will press for more regulations (whose impact is to make it harder for certain people to vote). They will continue to build prisons in white majority areas and count prisoners (who cannot vote) as residents of those communities rather than the communities they came from.

  • From an outsider’s point of view, questions really need to be asked of the entire GOP for enabling Trump. Did he just serve their purpose by acting as a huge, mental orange diversion whilst they carried on with their nefarious deeds?

You can pick just one day at random during the last 4 years to find something Trump did that would have ended the career of any normal politician and ended up with them having a criminal record.

Why was he allowed to run, let alone continue?

He wouldn’t have passed security clearance to be a janitor in a library with all his baggage and potential for blackmail.

Yet they let him run. And then they protected him and let him stay in office.

And as of now, only one Republican has joined the call to remove him from office immediately.

Man, thank goodness we haven’t all lost our minds with this “my side is better than your side” business the media flings out every day, all day. Your post resonates with me as a once “long time democrat” and now a “please don’t lump in with the silly d-words”

I’m going to try to refrain from clicking on political posts on this forum on a go-forward! Amazing times we live in, that’s one thing we can all agree on!

Thanks for the comment. I sometimes feel like the only person who thinks like I do. It has led me to abandon Facebook, which I used to enjoy. It's a little safer to dip one's toes in the water on this forum, as I have no IRL friends here :)

I don't want to make a habit of doing political posts, or even clicking on the topics. I usually just steer clear of it but every now and then I think it's important to express what you think, no matter how unpopular it might be. It's almost a duty maybe?

The real danger of “my side vs yours” (which is politics as essentially an armchair/forum sport)

(rather than politics as action within the magnificent construct that is democracy)

is that a “versus” construct (Yankees fans vs Dodgers) serves entities that are in pursuit of the $.

This is what we have seen for the last 4 years most vividly. $ driven agency manipulating the ignorance (or legitimate issue interests) with the sole purpose of massive movement of cash for filthy profit.

Grifters pulling strings on We The People, short circuiting productive conversation about, and action on, issues and policy.

Democracy is delicate. It’s built on a real tension between opposing views. That’s the whole idea.

And it’s built on truth and facts - yes there are such things - and and fact-based facts have been the first casualty of the con that is the “culture war”. Truth where policy is concerned isn’t relative.

And policy is complex, elusive especially in a realm where public education has been systematically pinched off. That isn’t and accident “a people both ignorant and free is something that has never been and never will be”

democracy was a direct assault on tyranny and the latest opponent is the tyranny of the manipulative, cynical rich and super rich.

Who do not give a f##k about anyone but themselves. A formidable opponent indeed, who’ve invaded all of our very nervous systems “right” “left” and “center” via all varieties of media, especially “social”.

Wow, very eloquent post. I’ve often said that politics is a sport played in business suits.

There's certainly a lot of truth in that. It's the politicians and the casual Trumpists who have expressed shame and backed away. Already there are postings on rightwing media for the "Million Militia March," which will coincide with Biden's inauguration. (Which shamefully and completely not surprisingly, Trump has said he will not attend.)

But I think they lost a lot of traditional conservatives, the kind who actually agree that vandalizing federal buildings is a felony.

Some wag recently referred to Russia as

    “Putin’s Gas Station”

Sounds like a guy who doesn't know much about Russia. There's more to Russia than Putin, and Putin is far from being the only powerful figure in Russia.

Yes, I know that he shares the country with a number of other oligarchs and the church.

Putin isn't an oligarch. And oligarchs in Russia are not politically powerful - that was the deal that Putin made when he came into power. They could keep their money if they stayed out of politics (Putin destroyed the Oligarchs who tried to remain in politics).

There are other powerful politicians in Russia at a state and local level, many of whom regularly come into conflict with Putin. There are also powerful groups in the military and FSB who have their own agendas, not to mention Russian cartels who have political interests. Putin is the most powerful figure in Russia, but he's far from being the only one. And a lot of his power comes from the fact that he's personally popular, and there's not a serious opposition at a state level (the 'opposition' figures we see in the west are loathed in Russia because they're associated with the awful Yeltsin years). The closest thing to an opposition party is probably the communist party.

As an example - the only person who probably didn't want any harm coming to Alexander Navalny in Russia was Putin. As a political figure he's comparable to Howie Hawkins, while Putin would be blamed by the west if he was hurt at a time he was trying to negotiate a gas pipeline with German/EU.

However Navalny had enemies all over Russia due to his (very good) campaigning journalism. Including the governor of the state he was in when he was poisoned. Putin's inability to keep him safe made him look weak domestically, while the probable loss of his number one foreign policy goal (the gas pipeline) was a disaster.

Whenever I say stuff like this I get accused of being an apologist for the man, which I'm not. He's dangerous, brutal and pretty right wing. He just isn't the bogeyman of the US imagination. And he's certainly not the one trying to create a new cold war.

Thank you. That is a really good and comprehensive overview of the reality of contemporary Russia.

A couple of things. First is that the video and still pictures celebrating mob members took during the riot will be posted, and reposted millions of times.

The "victorious" images will be packaged into promotional videos and other materials to attract ten of thousands of new members to the various groups.

The event also served as an introductory meet and greet for the various leaders of the innumerable militias and alt-right and right-wing extremist groups nationwide — such as the Proud Boys, the Oath Keepers, the Groyper Army and the Three Percenters.

Basically the result will be a massively more unified group that will be able to provide a much more organized and targeted response to any threat or attack nationwide — perceived or otherwise.

Yes, that makes sense. A kind of “look what we can achieve with numbers” type of recruiting. I hadn’t really thought about that, but it certainly seems plausible.

It's all very Coen-esque, to be sure.

All this stuff about the clowns on the alt-right misses the fact that the Trumpists present a substantial problem for the Republicans: the suburban vote cancels out the rural vote in many states (and will grow, given demographic trends). From NYT:

The bet fell far short. Mr. Trump lost ground with suburban voters across the country. And particularly in Georgia, where rapidly changing demographics have made it the most racially diverse political battleground in the country, his pitch has been at odds with reality.

From the inner suburbs surrounding Atlanta and extending to the traditionally conservative exurbs, Democrats benefited from two big changes: Black, Latino and Asian residents moving into formerly white communities and an increase in the number of white, college-educated moderates and conservatives who have soured on Mr. Trump.
