James Brown summed up so many political speeches many years ago with “Talkin’ loud and sayin’ nothing”
I recently started going through his whole catalog. Love it!
Let us know if you manage to cheat birth...
Sadly it appears a segment of the mob was exceptionally well equipped and armed — with an objective of assassinating members of Congress as well as Vice President Mike Pence:

Like I said...
I’ve heard on the BBC reported that the woman who was shot, was heard to say, ‘I’m here, it’s a revolution’, just prior to being shot. Which just shows the level of insanity that the mob was deliberately whipped up, to believe their cause was just and true.
You’re a good man Capn. Bless you and take care.
I’ve heard this stuff for 20 years. My father in law used to forward email chains to her and it wasn’t much less whacky than qanon. I think it’s been getting worse but It was getting worse under bush and Obama too. It’s mostly wealthy white people.
Not to mention the untold number he has cursed, to follow soon, due to his inept ability to tackle the virus, which Biden will inherit.
Politicians are generally distrusted...some more than others. I don’t think it is accurate to imply that most people worship politicians or deeply trust them.
Almost everyone tries to co-ordinate agendas to their benefit. Billionaires simply have more ability to have an influence over what gets implemented. That fact makes it even more important that people participate in the political process in order to combat that influence. In a democracy, it is possible for the people to constrain the degree of influence those billionaires have.
In the U.S., there is one party very focused on making sure billionaires can have maximum influence on the process and (not coincidentally) ensuring they pay little in the way of taxes. While both parties may be dominated by people that are quite a bit wealthier than the average person, only one of the parties has the singular devotion to the billionaire class that the GOP does.
All governments are far from perfect. We will always have flawed options, we need to wisely elect the least flawed option and exert our influence through voting to move things towards our notions of a just and fair society.
None of us will achieve what we want in the timeframe if our preference. But we can make progress, however incremental. The power of social and political pressure has wrought significant if insufficient progress during my lifetime. For instance, while structural and systemic racism still adversely affect a large portion of the population, the situation is significantly better than when I was born — at which time segregation was legal and Martin Luther King was reviled by the majority of Americans and racism was legal (and condoned).
Political engagement by the populace can effect change though true change is slow. In my opinion, if you want a better world encourage people to engage in the process and educate themselves rather than discourage them with the notion that what they do has no impact. When you discourage people from participating, you increase the influence of the self-interested only interested in preserving their wealth or power (or extremist religious agenda or whatever).
“Because of the historic nature of the Capitol riot, the mob not only destroyed historically important artifacts but created them. As cleanup crews tended to the Capitol’s exterior on Thursday, another type of worker was sifting through the mess for salvageable items. Frank Blazich, a curator from the National Museum of American History collected signs and other ephemera from the scene. Among the objects: a sign that read, “Off with their heads: Stop the steal.” Other leavings, including pro-insurrection stickers and flags found inside the Capitol, will be preserved along with artifacts like the speaker’s damaged name plate in the House and Senate collections and shared with national museums, including the Smithsonians, said the Committee on House Administration spokesperson.”

Amen.
Also, lack of information and education. See Texas schoolbooks and “daughters of the confederacy”
I would assume they actually are proud of that, in the same way they are proud of their racism and other bigotry.
America won’t change while we have leaders who insist on dragging us backwards with the kind of demagoguery we’ve seen over the past 4 years.
It could be worse, you could be Mike Pence he’ll forever be known as a Judas to those lunatics, who worship Trump as a demigod.
I think it tells us a lot about these people's commitment to their view of the world -- that Pence, despite being thrown under the bus -- still has Trump's back to some extent. He will make no move that might undermine the possibility that they will (in some future election) accomplish their goal via their traditional method of restricting voting and dominating the courts.
I would have thought Pence would have so much pent up disgust at Trump by now that he would be ramming a copy of the 25th Amendment down his throat.
He’s willing to throw anyone and everyone under the bus, so I have no clue why anyone would remain loyal to him.
@CapnWillie Well, I admit that it's not as easy as "educated or not". Supplying "valid" information can be done without telling the full story.
Answer: $
I think however we are looking at this.... it’s probably wrong. IMO, it is impossible to call out something that is detached from reality with rational thinking... except rational thinking that looks more deeply into the socio-psychological reality that is taking place here. As the behorned, painted, terrorist, Chansley volunteered to the FBI... “I was just doing what the prez ordered me to do.” If this had been 1941 and it was FDR, there would be nothing wrong with that.
I mean, how do we feel about the deluded mob that followed Jim Jones into the Great Beyond and literally spawned the “He drank the Kool Aid” appellation? I venture to think we believe them to be cultified psychotics who have abandoned reality. Is it any different here? I guess we can condemn them for being weak minded. We can certainly shut them down, tho they be in the hundreds of thousands. We can disband their militias and force them underground. We can patrol social media to the red line of stopping free speech.
We can also apply the tyranny playbook and the Big Lie tactics that have been copiously scrutinized and detailed in books like Timothy Snyder’s “On Tyranny, 20 Lessons from the 20th Century”

We can learn from it, we can identify it, we can attempt to exterminate it, but if we try to logically dispute it we will fail, IMO, because we are missing the point.... that the human mind is totally vulnerable to the magicians of autocracy and always will be.
It is easy to characterize it as sheer stupidity, but I leave it to the mental health professionals and sociologists to put the finer point on it... our basic human deficiency to be swayed by fear (disguised as anger), disenfranchisement, demonization of the Other... our amygdylian, primitive, natures that cannot be viewed as anything but corrupt by the superegoic structures of “moral” society.
So many say “This is not us”, but that is the furthest from the truth and mere wishful thinking. The immortal Al Capp (edit: Walt Kelly in Pogo, not Capp. Thanks @JeffChasteen) expressed it best... “I have seen the enemy and he is us”.
Meanwhile I have uncovered a ISIS like cell in my very midst...
Frightening!
Bitches be crazy!
If I became a scientist working in a shed. A virus that stops people speaking in a certain part of the land or time of day. Its just a private business and the answer is to just get another scientist to work out the same virus ( whether they chose the same outcome or not ) You would lose more senses via the internet censorship version. Sight. Sometimes vocal and the ability to touch keyboard. Where as a scientist in a shed would mainly be hindering vocal. Sight of vocal but not really touch. People would generally request an air strike but would be more difficult if they couldnt speak.
Its not the same if can view. You can still pretend keyboard. Its still the same though I guess but people would likely opt for an air strike ( provided they didnt prefer the peace and quiet ) That could be the next phase. A phase of peace and quiet before maybe an air strike for another reason.
There are plenty of deluded and psychologically unbalanced people in the world, aligned with any and all ideologies and beliefs, there always will be. What is needed is a robust system for making sure that mentally unsuitable individuals never get to occupy positions of power over the lives of others. Something along the lines of a clean bill of mental health, maybe a professional psychological evaluation performed every 5 years from childhood onwards. Anyone who shows ongoing psychopathic or narcisistic tendencies, etc., would be ineligible for high public office.
Nice idea, but it wouldn't have helped 'Merica.
Donnie is a "very stable genius!" Just ask him!
Sick systems are very common. If you've ever been in a bad relationship or found yourself trapped in a work hell, some of it might ring true, anyway.
I'm not American and I try to keep out of his stuff but this story's consuming me. Trump is such a bad guy. It's almost unbelievable. I was mostly in a state of disbelief up until the family separation/children in cages thing came out, at which point the whole thing felt much darker.
I hope this impeachment takes and the racist, pipe bomb-toting crazies go to prison and everybody, everywhere starts focusing on what will help, rather than the other thing. Which doesn't help.
