It’s a pity the screen doesn’t scroll along when doing the lazy chop, then you could zoom it in a bit and make it easier to hit the spot.
@elf_audio congrats for the awesome update! I have a question for you if you don't mind:
Alternatively to AUv3, is there any chance Koala might get multi output? I was thinking it could be bank based - so, 4 different outputs, one for each.
I know this is very personal, but I was thinking that that way, I could hook up my Digitakt to the iPad and trigger different kind of loops (ie. Bass, Pads, Leads, FX) and send each bank to a different output for individual processing (ie. different filtering for each kind of sound, FX sends for each, etc.)
This could be VERY useful imho, specially since there aren't any (afaik) audio clip-like players on iOS that run inside AUM, like Koala does.
Enjoying.... 😎🙂😘😍
Would be great if you could name the pads. Kick, snare, bass etc. i often want to name the pad after the synth i used so if i want to add more of that sound to koala i know what to sample 😎
I actually thought of this as well... an optional sample name on a corner could be very useful - I would prefer that rather than having to name them manually tbh, even if there's a character limit
Id prefer to be able to edit the name since i typically sample from synth directly to koala but any indication of the sample would be great
Would really like to 'test' how others are using this gem... Maybe some 'Share Koala Songs' (no Copyright samples)... ??
I'm loving this update! Started messing with the PO sync and using Ableton Link.
Anyone else noticed a bug when MIDI mapping the delete button? Sometimes the mapped delete CC will stop working until you delete something by touching the delete button on the touchscreen, then it’ll start working again.
Haven’t pinned down the exact conditions that trigger it yet but if/when I do I’ll submit a bug report to @elf_audio
Just to note, everything asked for here, elf did in 2021.
! Kudos, doffed cap.
Thanks Marek!
Nice..
Hi @elf_audio, I wanted to report a bug: Koala hosted in Loopy Pro crashes consistently when I drag and drop from Sample Crate. I have a video but can’t attach it right now. I‘m on an iPad Pro 11“ (the first one, 2018 I think) and run iPadOS 15.2. Reboot didn’t help.
Yep, need my Koala fix, but it’s not playing well with Loopy Pro.
It even crashed in standalone when dragging from Sample Crate. 😓
Does it crash if you drag or import multiple files from the Files.app? (That is the way I use it without issues).
On this note, but staying with Sample Crate (when I noticed dragging from the crate was crashing Koala), I was able to drag and drop via ‘Select’/‘Select All’ method in split screen.
Same here. It seems to be connected to Sample Crate. It worked via the split screen -> select all. I was importing 5 files at once.
Loopy Pro is quite unstable with AUv3s for me. A lot of AUv3s have to reload when I come back from another app. Just now Koala reloaded without the samples. 😖
It would be helpful if you could report over in the Loopy Pro threads -- or write to Michael about any AUv3 that consistently mis-behave in it.
Will do.
Also would be great if crashes in loopy pro with koala could also be reported at https://www.koalasampler.com/contact - preferably with as much info as possible eg how the crash was triggered, what device/os version would be massively appreciated. I can’t really help unless there is some context - If I can recreate the problem I can fix it, or can discuss with Michael and try to work out a fix.
I have sent Michael several crash logs. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of particular triggers. Even small projects with a few short (i.e. one measure or less) samples can crash. If you haven't received them from him, I know he was planning on sending them to you.
Thank you @elf_audio for fixing the missing audio on the first beat! Can continue using this as normal.
just realized this yesterday 😂 I’m so happy! Here is a link that shows almost all the keyboard bindings.
https://www.koalasampler.com/help/learning/keyboard-shortcuts-in-koala/
the only thing missing from the link is that in keyboard mode notes are played using Q-row and A-row (just experiment) also the Z and X shift the octave.
Don't know if you saw my thread yesterday but I mentioned keybinds in Koala (https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/58627/questions-aum-with-koala-and-korg-gadget-sampling-gadget-into-koala) and to kinda expand on that there are a number of keyboards/macro pads/game controllers available that allow you to fully customize the keystrokes it sends. You can also DIY one with lots of kits out there. Making your own custom controller is easier now with 3d printers being so common and components being back in stock, diy midi controllers is also a fun rabbit hole.
I use an 8bitDo Micro controller for Procreate and have played around with it in Koala. It's cheap ($20-25), small, comfortable for one hand use, and works great as a transport control if you're using Koala with a controller that lacks them like an Akai MPD218.
The clutch thing about keyboard shortcuts with Koala is that it allows you to change sample banks whereas I still don't think there is a way to do this over midi still. The other things specific to the keyboard shortcuts (not available via midi mapping) are adjusting the number of bars in a sequence and flipping between the sample/sequencer/perform sections. Some people prefer to touch the screen as little as possible so this covers a lot of stuff missing from midi control.
I really hope Koala adds midi mapping to sample banks and other functions within the sample edit menu. I'd love to map a midi controller so I can press a button to normalize a sample, open up sample chop, and be able to zoom in/out and select/move each chop start/end point in Samurai (to chop like an MPC).

Commented on this post!
Hope it helps.
Well this looks amazing. Thanks for sharing. Koala is my main use so this is super helpful. Thanks again!
The dev is so great but I’m sure if it’s possible it’ll be implemented. Basically just a pleasant surprise is how I’ve come to frame it if it ever happens. Great points though.
Off beat: This is the third time I’ve seen an article that mentions Pedals in it today. I think it’s a sign I need to get this 8bitDo and a pedal haha.
@miggymac - thanks for pointing that out, I've added it now:
https://www.koalasampler.com/help/learning/keyboard-shortcuts-in-koala/
I'm adding a bunch more keyboard support - definitely a dream to have koala fully controllable by qwerty keyboard (and more midi support one day)
Perfect, that’s great! Your app is so much fun to use, thanks for all you do.
Thanks for this! I have an akai mini mpk mk3 and have been looking for a simple small transport controller to accompany it. I use Procreate too but with an AOIKTYE keyboard. It never occurred to me that I could probably use that as a transport controller.
And if you're using keyboard shortcuts there are way more options for wired and Bluetooth pedals that send keybinds vs midi pedals.
Happy to hear and thanks for making such a great app and keeping it affordable. I'm nearing 40 and have been using samplers for 25 years and think Koala really takes the best parts of the hardware experience and removes so many of the barriers, not just price. I grew up without much money in Alaska but thankfully it coincided with software like Rebirth, Reason, and affordable DAWs all coming out which really democratized music production for so many of us that did not have access to hardware due to price or location. Koala is, no doubt, doing the same for a new generation of young people. Thanks again for keeping it priced affordably, you could charge more (we all know it) but you don't and it means more people have access who otherwise wouldn't.
Another plus is the 8BitDo software is on iOS and Android so you can change keybinds anywhere quickly.
I looked at the AOIKTYE Procreate key pad but couldn't figure out if the keybinds were able to be edited in software. Also checked out generic Bluetooth num pads but didn't want something that bulky and don't have the time to diy one right now. I just want like 8 flat assignable keys with Bluetooth in a small form factor.
