It sounds like you are able to split one knob into different params? Rather than just one continuous param?

That's right. Some dials actually orchestrate multiple attributes behind the scenes.

My idea is to crossfade from the overdrive into a separate fuzz algorithm in the upper 30% of the level dial. When you're in the "fuzz" zone, the tone dial will control the fuzz algorithm, I'm imagining it being bass heavy and growly at the lower end of the tone dial.

...I understand that you want to please the metalheads...

Oh, quite the opposite. The high-gain market is already fabulously served by Nembrini et al, I have absolutely no illusions about cracking that audience. I'm very happy to focus on my own comfort zone, which is most definitely pristine cleans & classic rock/blues.

I would suggest a listen to the Nembrini fuzz, that’s the good kind.

Thanks, fortunately I already have a few proprietary fuzz algorithms in the db audioware toybox, just need to dust one off and bring it up to date :)

Fantastic! You’re the man! And yes nobody needs more metal amps, they are rarely a bastion of quality guitar tone anyway (with a few exceptions). I really appreciate all the secret sauce you can put into your app, that with a good manual will pay off huge. If you have any more tricks up your sleeve for multiple attributes, do not hesitate. Cheers!

If I may add to the fuzzy fuzz issue.... Maybe a little switch to select drive or fuzz mode?. These combinations of > 75% drive, tone at xxx etc will yield that result but it sounds a bit hard to figure out. A little switch could preset them internally without the need for a separate module, just an idea.

  • @DaveB just a reminder that in standalone the app only detects input 1, so with a multi channel interface if you happen to use the guitar with input 2 etc.. there’s no signal. This is a non issue with AUv3 since you just choose the input in the host, but standalone you may want to have an auto detect, or an input choice in the menu, or a note in the manual about it. Cheers!

  • This is very good, presets are a great starting point, in fact I’m finding for just a quick noodle I don’t need to tweak at all.
The cleans in this are on a par or maybe better than gainstage vintage clean which is another favourite of mine.

Totally agree! I’ve been A/B’ing this with GSVC, and I find that FH-2 sounds a bit more brilliant, and a bit more like a guitar amp. It is very much in the mold of a feature rich Vox or Fender. I find GSVC its own beautiful thing, it has a different sound, more like a honky saturated preamp rather than a bonafide guitar amp, and the layout is preamp like as well.

I agree with both of you. GSVC still holds its place precisely because it doesn’t sound like an amp. I used FH-2 on guitar and GSVC on the bass.

  • Haggis Maximus!

So I was curious if anyone else is having an issue with FH launching in standalone mode. It works perfectly in AUM, but cashes every single time for me in standalone. This was both with the original FH-2 and the new update. I've already reported this to Dave, but was just curious if anyone else was having a similar issue. I've got a 6th generation iPad running 14.4.1.

Also in AUM, I noticed that if I use the hamburger menu to select an FH preset, the knobs change to reflect the preset, but the preset window in Haggis is not updated.

Otherwise, I really love the app. I have a 90's era Strat with red, silver, and blue Lace Sensor pickups. The blue one is in the neck position, and I've hated it forever. This is probably because it attempts the emulate a P-90. FH-2 has turned it into a sweet sounding little beast. Very nice!

i have had some issues in standalone as well. some time it just takes a long time to open. The preset window is still acting weird as well, mostly just dissapearing when i touch anything on screen. but im really loving it! it just sounds great no matter what!

Can you go into the iOS Settings app, open the Privacy > Microphone page, and check if FH-2 has access to the mic?

  • That was the problem, Dave! No more crashes in standalone. Thanks!

Was noodling with it in AUM for a couple hours last night and it's truly impressive. My Strat has Plus Deluxe red, silver and blue Lace Sensor pickups, and I've hated the blue neck pickup from day one. This probably is due to it's aim to replicate a P-90 — which I despise. Somehow FH-2 has magically made the tone on it so much less muddy that I no longer need to worry about accidentally switching to the neck position.

Even though this app does a great job with pristine cleans, with some adjustments I was able to get a suitably gritty ZZ Top "My Head's in Mississippi" tones.

Ya this beta is getting a reputation for its great clean tones, but it is awesomely versatile and puts out some mean crunchy gritty ampy stuff as well. This is my new go-to.

  • Really enjoying the tones on this; slapped together a quick vid for fun. I was very sad to see FH-1 disappear; I've got an old iPad that still has the first generation running, but it's a hassle to switch over to it, just to get to the app.

Oh Lord help me, two of my all time favorite app developers on the same thread!!! It’s Nice to Se Your Friend(s)!

    Nice guitar!

  • @DaveB pretty sure I found a substantial bug with the Delay fx. When turning it off and on, it doesn’t clear the sound so it’s acting like a looper, and when the knobs are maxed out, you can turn it off and then 5 minutes later turn it on and it’s still going. Also, it catches the weird machinery sounds of turning the time knob up and down, so it gets stuck like a spasmy space robot or something. Sending you a private video of the behavior.

I’m really sorry to say this, but after trying the app once again,I can honestly say I don’t like it.
    To my ears,something is missing.
I have the same feeling as with stark from klevgrang.
I love clean and crunch sounds, but not the ones I’ve found in this app.
Surely a matter of taste as many of you like it.
There is a place for everyone on this earth😉!
    Enjoy!

  • I’ve got a few days off coming next week, so I should have a good bit of time to sit down and put FH-2 through some testing.

  • Beta 1.0.6 should be ready this weekend. A few final bug fixes, a new fuzz effect, an input level trim control, and a shiny new name...

Awesome, looking forward to trying! Thanks for being so receptive to our requests and comments. I look forward to using the app in rotation with my TH-U and Nembrinis. I actually can get a few really useful sounds out of it that I can’t anywhere else.

  • Was there some kind of technical issue with the FH-2 update, Dave?

Didn’t see a new version all weekend, and inquiring minds want to know the new app name you settled on...

  • I can hardly ...wait...

Beta 1.0.6 is now with Apple for approval. A wee side-note is in order to explain the new product name...

I realised (with a not inconsiderable amount of surprise) that on the 26th February, at the height of this beta test, my little company turned 20 years old. It would be a shame not to celebrate this, so I am very proud to present - the db audioware 20th anniversary guitar amp :)

    What's new in 1.0.6:

    • Renamed to “20th anniversary”
    • Added fuzz algorithm to Drive pedal (via 3-way power toggle)
    • Extended MIDI control options with virtual MIDI port, thanks to @SecretBaseDesign for the suggestion! iOS preferences still allow listening to any connected MIDI device.
    • Added input ‘Trim’ knob (for basic control of input levels)
    • Standalone now captures audio from both L&R channels of connected audio interface.
    • Last loaded preset remains visible in display.
    • When changes are made, a ‘*’ is appended to the preset name (reminder to save)
    • Add read-only “Factory Presets” bank.

    • Bug fix: Switching the Delay off also clears the delay buffers

    • Bug fix: Reduced audio glitches when switching presets.
    • Bug fix: Crash on startup when Microphone not enabled in iOS preferences.
    • Bug fix: When selecting “Bypass” in the Cabinet menu, the Ambience knob is also bypassed.

Fantastic job @DaveB !! Really like the name. Great list of updates and fixes. Heading to the basement now to rock this thing out. Thank you!

It's still awaiting the OK from Apple, you'll get a TestFlight email when it's ready to download. Only took them a couple of hours to approve the last release, so fingers crossed :)

Ok cool, guess I’ll hang some more with the wife 😆

I really like that you used db audioware in the name... and also congrats on the milestone.

  • Indeed! 20 years in a long time in iOS years! Congrats!

  • I’m on the road today, but was wondering if anyone has had a chance to noodle on the latest Anniversary Update?

  • 1.0.6 is available for testing now. I will be rockin’ on this for the next hour and will at least provide some report...
