What 9 Apps

I think I did this a year or so ago but plenty of great apps have come out since then and I’m sure we have a bunch of new forum members.

If you could only have 9 music creation apps, what would they be and why? I say 9 because I like to keep my iPhone slim so I stick to one page of one folder.

Mine:
1. Cubasis 3 - My favorite DAW, works well for transitioning from iPhone to iPad
2. BLEASS Alpha - My favorite synth. Versatile, easy to sound flashy, and an excellent UI.
3. Lagrange - Second favorite synth, especially for strings and complex sounds.
4. Bass 808 - Only 808 bass synth I know of on iOS, perfect for beatmaking.
5. EG Pulse - One of the few AUv3 sample drum machines that isn’t based on a single machine.
6. Flip - Fun little sampler/sequencer with some solid features.
7. Pure Acid - Favorite groovebox. Very fun, easy to pick up and make something cool that you can expand on later.
8. Endlesss - The most fun music app I’ve found. It’s great for when I want to create music without feeling like I have to be productive and create something “good”.
9. Mononoke - Relaxing and meditative

    1. Beatmaker 3 - my goto Daw with the best workflow for me
    2. Synthmaster one - most complete Synth in my opinion, also light on the cpu
    3. Zeeon best VCA on the plattform use it almost everytime
    4. Puresynth platinum. - my goto for real sounds, amazing library as a rompler
    5. Tal Uno x - sounds like a real juno 60, easy to use and light on the cpu
    6. Fabfilter pro bundle (yeah yeah its cheating but I would recommend the whole bundle) up on front pro q3, pro R and pro L2
    7. Fabfilter Saturn 2 - amazing saturation and distortion
    8. Mixbox - maybe the best fx collection for starters, so many good old school apps
    9. Calum audio flux mini, a real game changer for my workflow, hope apro version is coming

Oh man I'm already at 9 but there are so many good ones that deserve a mention from the awsome fac stuff, over woot, up to the magic death eye compressors there is so much good stuff.

    1. Nanostudio 2 - My lifeblood. It has Obsidian, Slate, great built-in effects. All it needs are the audio tracks, but I've done fine without audio tracks thus far. Did a Vocal Trance remix last week in it without any issues.
    2. MagicDeathEyeStereo - I used to use the first MDE, but MDES is far better. It has an EQ where I can shave off below 20 Hz with the flick of a switch.
    3. BarkFilter - My secret mixing and mastering weapon. I use it on synths to liven them up a bit more. Sometimes I'll use it on acoustic instruments too. Of course I also use it in my mastering chain. Can't live without this one.
    4. Barricade - My mastering limiter of choice on the iPhone.
    5. Pro-L2 - My mastering limiter of choice on the iPad.
    6. Beathawk - My ideas sketchpad and sound source for lots of world instruments.
    7. Cubasis 3 - What I use to record my vocals.
    8. MTS Studio - What I use to tune my vocals.
    9. TwistedWave Audio Editor - I use this to normalise my mastered audio down to -3dB before I post it to Soundcloud (since Soundcloud seems to reduce the bitrate of audio and make things sound if the audio is too loud).
    1. Beat Maker 3
    2. Drambo
    3. SunVox
    4. IK MixBox
    5. Korg Module Pro
    6. KQ Dixie
    7. Poison 202
    8. Lagrange
    9. Koala Sampler

That's for the iPad, the selection is a bit different for the iPhone...

AUM, Drambo, EG Pulse, Mirack, KQ Dixie, Continua, Sunvox, Spectrum Bundle are my used apps of the last year. Not counting FX, which I'd have 9 of those at least. Yup, that's 7 not nine.

In an effort to use all other synths I didn't use as much, I tried using a different one each day of Jamuary/January this year.

  • Essentials at the moment:

  • AUM
    Rozetta
    miRack
    Lagrange
    Quanta
    FRMS
    FAC Alteza
    FAC Chorus
    Toneboosters EQ

  • Aum, Jam maestro and Xequence 2 as my go to “daw”.
ApeFilter for eq, Kosmonaut for delay and Stratosphere for Reverb.
    Animoog
    Sunrizer
    IFretless bass
    Patterning 2
    Roseta + Mozaic
    Drambo
GeoShred and KB-1 as midi controllers.

Honorable mentions : model d and model 15 ( I’d use them much more than I do if my poor IPad 1 could handle them), ripplemaker, Borderlands, Noir and ChordMaps2.

  • I bet a lot of music could be made with:
Auria Pro (for having a DAW with freeze, Fabfilter One and Twin2, and Lyra sample instruments)
    SynthMaster Player
    ProR
    ProQ
    ProC
    Saturn (1 or 2)
    Timeless
    Volcano
    ProMB
    ProL

  • These are the ones
    I use the most lately
    on my Iphone

    IReal Pro
    Drumgenius
    Korg Gadget
    Blocs Wave
    AUM
    SpaceCraft
    Electric Vintage
    LoopBud
    Sampletank

  • For the iPad:

    apeMatrix
    GarageBand
    Rozeta
    Hillman
    Mellowsound
    Moog Model D
    Ripplemaker
    Kronecker
    Axon 02

  • Here's my list:

    1. Staffpad
    2. Cubasis 3
    3. AUM
    4. AudioShare
    5. Grand Finale (I still enjoy the way this one sounds).
    6. MixBox
    7. Gestrument Pro
    8. Piano Motifs
    9. TB Equalizer

Of course, there are dozens more. But if forced to pick 9, this'd be them.

    1. Drambo
    2. Saturn 2
    3. Streambyter
    4. AnalyserFX
    5. Mix Bus Compressor (Blue Mangoo)
    6. Eos 2
    7. Spacecraft
    8. Enso
    9. Aum

That's actually really all I use at this point. But I do also use some hardware :P

Edit: I make mostly noisy percussive-based dance music.

I mean if we are talking only 9, just to be honest, I couldn’t do that for reals, but let’s have a little fun shall we... maybe in a closed system or daw workflow you could get away with 9, but in a DAW-less workflow it wouldn’t be ideal, but here it goes... this is a struggle.

    In a very loose order.

    1. AUM
    2. Was Atom/Now its Atom2
    3. Mozaic
    4. Digistix
    5. Electric
    6. OB-XD
    7. Tal-U-No-Lx
    8. sEGments
    9. Bud Bundle. is that cheating, lol. I know it is. Ok, fine, Bleass Filter

But I’m leaving out a slew of apps I use on a regular basis, a daily basis, which is why 9 is too few for my workflow, but something fun to think about. Actually it was a little frustrating, lol. So I tried not to overthink it too much. There are so many apps that deserve to be in that list. All the Bud apps as mentioned jokingly above, obviously Audioshare, Drum Computer, Pure Synth Platinum, Rozeta, Tonality AU Pads, SoundFonts AU, TB EQ, Bark Filter, Tape Cassette, Bleass Delay, EG Pulse, Chameleon, Fractal Bits, a bunch of FX apps, Midi apps, Koala, Kosmonaut, etc.. I could go awhile.... and there are many great apps I use often, not mentioned here.

You know, I’ve been thinking of which apps were great for acoustic sounds. Had a few of them already. Thanks for this list, @LinearLineman . What’s your thoughts on ThumbJam even in 2021?

Here’s mine...I’d say it depends on preference. But since we’re looking at iPhone specifically, here’s my go to:

    1. Groovebox - I love the quick inspiration workflow of Groovebox. If Reason Compact added a few more features, then it would have been a tie.
    2. Blocs Wave - Amazing application. There’s so much to say about Blocs Wave from the randomized, to the loop management
    3. Launchpad - Live loop performance. Sending a project from Blocs Wave to Launchpad is just so easy. It’s what inspired me to make my iOS shortcut.
    4. Garageband - Need I say more? Has the best MIDI MPE instrument, syncs with Logic, has live loops, and a lot of underrated features.
    5. TONALY -I honestly think this is the best MIDI app on the go. I really love the simplicity of the design, yet it’s super powerful.
    6. KOALA Sampler - Koala on a phone is a different experience. It turns into a Pocketable sampling device, and you’re able to do a lot of “in the moment” sampling.
    7. Drambo - This is currently the Mixbus and Synth app to get on iOS and iPad. It’s an AUv3 effect, synth, Groovebox, MIDI, audio recorder, wave table synth, subtractive synth, and much more.
8, Audiobus (or AUM) -This is the bridge to multiple apps. I use Audiobus 3 more, because of the ease of s
    8. Audioshare

Drambo - because it’s my muse. An instrument, effect, sequencer, sampler, midi processor and more. I could delete every app except this one and be happy for years. Did I mention I also think it has one of the most flexible and creative samplers?

miRack - less of a muse than Drambo for me, but it shares the same capabilities as the former.

Sunvox - trackers bring something different out of me. I love programming percussion in SunVox. I think its built in instruments have real character. The song mode / timeline of SunVox is #1.

Poly 2 - best percussion sequencer on the planet. Poly rhythms (or straight sequences) for days. Excellent pattern permutations. Whether your jam is funk or IDM Poly 2 can cover it in spades.

Mixbox - Bread and butter mix and mastering tool. Jokes on the OP cause there’s like 50 apps for 1 in this one.

Saturn 2 - cause it’s just too damn good. Multiband saturation and distortion. The built in feedback is fantastic. Dialing in varying degrees of feedback on each of the 6 bands can do magic to tracks.

Thafknar - for all things reverb with quality. And special spectral fx the other apps can’t touch.

FRMS - 4 layers of granular synthesis going through filters with FM between layers. Great as an instrument or fx processor. My go to harmonizer.

Spacecraft - the best granular pitch shifting on IOS. As the others, this one also excels as either instrument or FX, doubling its utility.

Because only 9 apps allowed, I figure there’s no need for Aum. Drambo is more than enough to host only 8 other apps.

  • @seonnthaproducer, lots of good sounds in TJ, but I rarely use it these days.

    OK this is today's list:

BM3 - a sampler on every pad, audio manipulator and that audio time stretch....easy work flow and fast taking over all the things I used to do exclusively in AUM.
AUM - sometimes you just want to peg a few things together and see what happens...
Gauss - there's just something about the sound and the workflow, plug it in and hey presto a loop that goes forever
Spacecraft - in time this has really become a favourite for granular work. Love the places this can take me to.
Saturn 2 - distortion, saturation, just generally messing things up and warming them up.
    FF Q3 - when it's an EQ I need.
    RE-1 - Tape delays - nuf said
    Pro-R - Space
Sunrizer - for when synths matter, easy to program (my first synth purchase and still one I go back to)

But, in reality BM3, Gauss and Spacecraft are probably all I really need.

    aum

    I feel you on “I think” 😂

  • I tried to consider what I use the most and what could cover apps that couldn’t use (Drambo is the Swiss Army knife of synthesis).
