Yeah, I’ve gotta ask after reading the description and the screenshots...what is there different or new? Normally I’d smash buy but I’m just not seeing anything unless the dsp engine improved. Right now I don’t even understand why there is a 2 (oh I think there’s one effect added?? But still), and I honestly prefer orange to the blue used for this, sooooo...
So far it's only the preset management and the keys I'm not too thrilled with. Would be good to be able to make the keys wider.
I asked Nikolozi about this, the synth engine itself is the same if I understood correctly, the main things so far are better interface, iPhone support etc, he will tweak the dsp in a coming update.
I guess all the details of what is new are in the app store description. Basically the new things are mainly iPhone support, iPad split screen, flexible UI, better preset management, perform view etc. It needed a complete rewrite of the UI code so I do believe there was a lot of work involved. Only you can decide how important the new features are to you. Certainly iPhone users will want to snap this up, and performance view is an excellent feature.
I caved anyway cause I needed to take my mind off something. Good ol’ retail therapy. I like this synth, happy to buy it, just need to spend some more time with it. Especially the phase distortion, I think Phase 84 is the only semi-decent PD synth I can recall. Any others out there??
The 4 osc/2 filters flexible routing is something I’ve always liked about it, Just a matter of getting to know it better. Helps being able to revert to orange mode. I’m not in a happy blue mood.
Nice one, Niko is a good dev and deserves support from those who have the means. And yes, the phase distortion, separate high quality fx module and now performance view make Mela well worth having.
Hey what happened the his NPD synth on the AppStore? I own it but do not see it?
@Morgman73 from what I recall, NPD was completely replaced by Mela when it was released in 2019
@oat_phipps ShockWave is PD too, though a lot more esoteric
Yeah, its features were put into Mela and for a while Mela was at a cheap price to sweeten the pill for NPD users.
@Gavinski Oh ok. Well I like the idea of having three different colors for each of the three different synths and it’s kind of a bummer that I don’t see it on the AppStore any longer but I’ll live. Thanks. Your channel is awesome man. Thank you for that.
Added to the arsenal @Nikolozi Loverly sounding synth as usual 🙏🏼💕
Been tinkering with this for an hour or so ... prettier than Mela 1 but fundamentally no radical reconstruction ... which is a bit cheeky really giventhe amount of work and thought that's gone into Atom 2 ... that really is a completely rebuilt app.
But I'm a big fan of this developer so I'm regarding Mela2 as an investment in a time of plague ... expecting a string of clever updates and enhancements in coming months.
Yeah, I’m in the deeply appreciate free updates, but understand making it a new separate item boat. I just don’t like when you click the icon in the app it says “Mela Synth Version 2.0”. At least call it Mela Synth 2 for god’s sakes; this basically suggests you’re charging for a maintenance update (and I know, dev, that you’ve done a ton of work already that will go thankless [and unpaid]. Without the aforementioned DSP updates or ANY new synth oriented features, though, it’s a pretty big gyp at the moment that preys on app addicts. It feels like if you re-released the exact same video game but changed the menu design, controller schemes, and color palette. I hope they’re coming, though, and not in the realm of NanoStudio 2 audio tracks. I paid, it’s a nice synth, I really do like it even though it’s the same, I got my complaining out, so I’ll go use it now.
The preset randomiser on the to do list.
Nice. A lot of users have been requesting iPhone support for a long time. In fact, I wanted it personally too
Still waiting for the Apple to approve the bundle.
Thank you 🙏
Still plan to do more CPU optimisations in 2.x updates.
I haven't had issues personally on iOS 14. I've been on it since September.
Awesome!
Are you talking about the Delay module in Mela? You should be able to change delay times of Left and Right channels independently by adjusting the horizontal sliders. And to have synced delays times toggle on the Sync parameter.
Your observation is correct. The audio engine hasn't changed much. It's mostly UI enhancements. Expect new DSP stuff in 2.x updates (just like in 1.x updates).
You can enabled the classic theme (orange) from the settings menu
Thanks Gavin! I appreciate the kind words.
@Soundscaper & @oat_phipps I promise, I'm not trying to be cheeky nor want to mislead anyone. I'm being fully upfront about how things work. A few others drew parallel to Atom 2 release. But I don't undeserved why. My approach is quite different. Atom 1 never got any significant updates (almost 2 years of no updates in fact?), whereas Mela 1 received 9 significant updates every 6 weeks or so (Here's the full release notes of all releases: https://nikolozi.com/mela/release-notes). Going from 1.0 to 2.0 is a huge update if look at it that way. Nothing against Atom developer btw. Everyone has their approach and he has built great apps. And I wish him success. I bought Atom 2 myself to play with it. In fact, it's in the Mela demo video lol. But personally, I'd rather deliver regular updates, keep users happy and they can give feedback early on to keep improving Mela. And I'm more than happy if some users stay on Mela 1.9 and upgrade to Mela 2.x whenever they think it's worth it for them. Here's an excerpt from my blog post about pricing (please check out full post here https://nikolozi.com/blog/2021/03/22/mela-2-update):
I'm happy to discuss this topic further or clarify any points I made. I don't want anyone to feel like they are getting ripped off or being mislead.
Preset management will improve. Hope to add custom folders soon. Regarding keys, I changed its design because I felt if users wanted to use bigger keys there are plenty of AUv3s that support those and hosts usually have big built-in keyboards. The new design works well on smaller screens. Having said that, it's very likely it might evolve once Mela has support for MPE.
Since Mela now has all the features of NPD, I didn't want people accidentally buying it. That's why I removed it from the App Store.
Thank you for your support 🙏
I think I've fully caught up on the thread. Let me know if I have missed anything or have more questions.
How weird - when I was jamming with it last night I only had 2-3 knobs available in the fx module and loads of the interface wasn’t there, or scrollable. I’ve just reopened AUM and reloaded the session and it’s all there!
Maybe it didn’t initialise properly the first time or something.
Anyway, sorted now. Will send you a screenshot if it happens again. 👍
You can select the original orange colour and turn it back in Mela 2 if you want to.
@Nikolozi Any chance to make it work in IOS 13? I have not updated my iPad not to lose old apps
Unfortunately, Mela 2 won’t support iOS 13. This is always a tough decision to make. I know it’s very upsetting to the users on older devices that can't upgrade to the latest iOS. But as mentioned above, I have very limited resources. Supporting and testing Mela on older iOS versions on multiple devices is hard to justify. Additionally, the app uses iOS 14 only features. So, writing code to incorporate the same functionality on older devices requires significantly more resources. I’d rather focus my efforts on adding new features to Mela.
(from the Mela FAQ: https://nikolozi.com/mela/faq)
After some hours of playing I can say the only the new UI is worth the money. Very well implemented. Congrats.
Thank you 🙏 Your kind words are much appreciated!
Well until I buy a new iPad it will be played on my iPhone. Bought it anyway to support your work. Also, the synth sounds really good
I appreciate your support. Thank you! 🙏
Thanks for sharing the video @Jumpercollins
Great sounding presets from Sound of Izrael for Mela 2. Be sure to grab them directly from him (details in the video description). 95 presets for only $3.5. Check out the demo video (which sounds epic) and support the great artist.
@Nikolozi - I understand where you're coming from with the update and don't regret the purchase. If the CPU could be a bit less intensive, that would be very welcome.
The CPU optimisation is high on the to do list. Hoping to improve various parts with each update. Let's see how it goes
Now this is really weird...
The Mela Bundle is out but it's actually more expensive to complete the bundle than to buy it separately?!
I wonder if it's because I bought Mela on 'sale' way back when it was released...
I’m getting these!
I love the new layout and iPhone version
