    Now this is really weird...

The Mela Bundle is out but it's actually more expensive to complete the bundle than to buy it separately?! :D
I wonder if it's because I bought Mela on 'sale' way back when it was released...

how much difference are you seeing? I think in different countries because of rounding you'll see some differences.

But in USD, I think, if you bought Mela 1 for $5, while it was on sale, then to complete the bundle you'll need to pay $15-$5 = $10.

So, the way App Store calculates is this: "The amount you pay for the upgrade equals to the bundle price minus the amount you paid for Mela 1 when you purchased it"

I wish it didn't work like this and there was a proper way to offer upgrade pricing in the App Store so users wouldn't get confused by this.

So, at the moment those who paid full price for Mela 1 should be paying around $5 to complete the bundle.

Also, once Mela 2 goes to its full price of $15 (on March 29) then using bundle would make sense even if you had bought Mela 1 for $5. Because then buying via the bundle should be cheaper.

    Hope this makes sense.

    Here's a link to the bundle: https://apps.apple.com/app-bundle/upgrade-to-mela-2/id1559586634

  • Just got Mela 2 @Nikolozi Would you consider supporting importing single cycle waveforms or samples for the oscillators?

The flexible architecture and clean organized UI of Mela would really allow some amazing sound design possibilities, if importing sample or waveforms was possible.

Well, to complete the bundle the price is 120SEK and buying Mela 2 separately the price is 119SEK...
...so completing the bundle is 1SEK extra :)

Another 'interesting' feature would be something similar custom oscillator in SunVox?
(These are screenshots of spline ad 'harmonics' mode).

In practice it's a 'waveform' based on 32 points (think finger-painting) with spline or stepped(s&h) interpolation between the points. To kick it up a notch, this type of 'waveform type' could also serve as an LFO/Step-Sequencer for modulation?

This might be something for Mela 2.5? (In that case I'd be more than happy to do beta on it!).

Sorry for Hijacking @auxmux 's post

No worries. @Samu That's a great idea! I'm guessing the Harmonics knob is doing some of this behind the scenes? But I could be wrong. This would be super neat. Ditto on custom LFO shapes.

Ditto, and also had the predecessor to Mela and the since some time ago discontinued NPD.
NFM is still pretty neat but makes my iPad Air 2 crawl :)

I'm holding back on spontaneous app purchases until I've got a new iPad as I suspect Apple will drop support for the iPad Air 2 when iPadOS15 ships later this year...

For me, buying the bundle is 11.50€ while the intro price to Mela 2 is 10.99€.

Regular price of Mela 2 will be something around 16€, so the bundle will allow to pick up Mela 2 for around the intro price even when the intro period is over.

This is assuming that the bundle‘s total price will not go up after the intro period. The bundle was shown as 16.99€ before accounting for my previous Mela 1 purchase

Same here. So the Bundle price is calculated from the definitive final price of MELA2 and not the intro-pricing. In some way that makes sense. Going to buy for intro-pricing then instead of the bundle.

And me had the same with the Bleass bundle aswell owned all but 1 the CompressorFX worked out 3 pence dearer in the bundle!

  • I got Mela 1 for £5 in the sale so got Mela 2 at the intro price instead of waiting for the bundle.

Tbf @Nikolozi was up front about this

  • I just purchased the bundle for $11 CDN. It’s one of my favourite synths so happy to support the ongoing development.

  • Ah! Mela has been one of my top go-to iOS synths. It just naturally compliments my style.

One big request if its not already in Mela 2: please add a Favorites or Labeling system to the presets.

  • Just copped this, really like the interface. Super logical and quick to navigate. Phase dist osc sounds sweet too.
Is there way to stop the LFOs from retriggering though?

  • Call me a broken record, but I still dream of that fated day when an iOs MPE synth releases that instantly works with all parameters of my Linnstrument without pulling out a single hair from my head.

  • Thanks @Nikolozi thats great news.

@Nikolozi : hi, don’t know if you were aware but my upgrade bundle ‘deal’ has it as exactly the same price, £9.99, as just straight buying Mela 2? (Well, a penny cheaper, I think). I believe I paid full price for Mela 1 so shouldn’t have affected the price in any weird way.

update I’ve now read the explanation for the weird way the Apple Store price things, so this isn’t a complaint, just an observation. I love Mela 1, it’s one of my go tos, so I suppose in the fullness of time I will ‘complete my bundle’. Just... a dollar or two actually cheaper would probably have tipped me to ‘impulse buy’. As is, I think I’ll hang fire a while. My iPad is perilously close to completely full as is. Good to know there’s something out there I can look forward to.

The bundle price will not go up. Unless, there's some limitation in the App Store which I have to deal with. But from what I understand it should be all good. This means both the upgrade bundle and the standard price of Mela are set to be $15. So no-one ever has to pay more than $15 in total to own both Mela 1 and 2 (in other currencies, there might some slight rounding issues, as described below, but they should be all close to Tier 15 price).

Let me try to explain how the pricing works and why it doesn't work perfectly when different currencies come into play.

We, developers, when we want to set a price we pick a price tier. There are tiers named: Tier 1, Tier 2 etc. Tier 1 corresponds to US$1 (0.99 to be precise, for simplicity I will round to nearest 50c) price, Tier 5 is $5 and Tier 15 is U$15 etc. So for USD they have 1 to 1 relationship. Tier 5 + Tier 10 = Tier 15. But may not be the case for other currencies, because Apple tries to pick nice round numbers. For example, in EUR, Tier 5 is 5.5, Tier 10 is 11 and Tier 15 is 17. And clearly, 5.5 + 11 ≠ 17. This is why it may look expensive to do it via bundle. Bundle is €17 and then if you bough Mela 1 on sale at €5.5 then you will get 17 - 5.5 = €11.5.

    Hope this makes sense.

Bundle price is independent of app prices. Bundle prices are set separately. The bundle price is set at fixed price of $15. But the amount you need to pay for Mela 2 = $15 - amount you paid for Mela 1

If you paid full price for Mela 1 you should definitely be able to purchase it at around £5. Maybe check your purchase history. Otherwise, App Store has a bug.

There's one restriction, bundles can't be cheaper than any of the items in the bundle. Because Mela 2 will be set at the standard price of $15, I can't price the bundle below that. So it's set to $15. I wish App Store let me reward early adopters but it doesn't.

    From my ‘Complete your bundle’:

I appreciate you have no control over this, and are trying to do right by your Mela 1 fans, and I thank you for that. But, as you can see, here in the UK at least, the ‘rounding error’ comes out as full (current) price. And yes, I have dragged to the bottom of the screen to make the bundle price update as sometimes is required. No dice.

  • Thanks everyone for support and kind words. Really appreciate all the positive feedback I've been getting. It excites me to do more.

Rather than responding to each feature request above, I'll just say that everything mentioned about is on my to do list (MPE, more flexibility with LFOs, preset management enhancements etc.). Just keep one thing in mind, I'm a one man show (and sometimes with a day time job), and I have a long list of feature requests. Just be patient with me as I cross them off one by one. This is not to discourage feature requests. Keep them coming, as it helps me prioritise better. Just saying, I may not be able to cross multiple things at once. And it's quite interesting to me, how everyone prioritise different features :)

Also, if anyone here wants to get on TestFlight, I'm happy to add them. Just drop me an email. I'm really appreciative of my beta testers and their feedback.

Can you double check that you paid full price for Mela 1, in your case full price should be £9.99? You'll have to check your purchase history or the receipt email.

@Nikolozi : okay, that explains it. I checked, I got Mela 1 on sale at £4.99. An unbelievable bargain at that price, so I guess I can’t really complain about not getting a discount on my discount. :)

Also, checking my Purchase History - wow, but I’ve bought a lot of apps the last couple of years... 544 in 2020 (!) to add to the 367 from the previous year. 2021: a mere 90 (so far)... This is why my iPad is full up...

Phew, that clears things up. lol, you are one of those synth addicts eh? 😂

  • @Nikolozi I just installed Mela 2 :)

...have a few questions regarding bank / preset management.
Are there any plans to add 'Banks/Preset Folders'?

Things can easily get kinda messy if all presets end up in one 'User' bank?

Is there any way to import a *.zip archive filled with presets? (Those downloaded from the web-site).
I know I can unzip and drag'n'drop the individual files onto Mela 2 from Files.app or use Import.

    Suggestion here would be...

Option to directly import a *.zip file with presets either by selecting a *.zip file in the import dialogue _or_ sending a *.zip file to Mela 2 using 'Share/Open In...' (For example Airdrop a *.zip with Mela 2 presets to the iPad/iPhone).

When importing a *.zip file ask the user to either 'Create a New Bank' or 'Import to Currently Selected Bank'.

When the bank/preset selector is open add a bank with '+'.
Tapping the '+' would bring up a dialogue that lets the user give the new bank a name.

To rename or share or delete a 'bank' long-tap on the bank name and it would bring up the similar import/export menu that pops up when tapping on the 'presets' name. The bank should be exported as a *.zip file for easy sharing.

I'll dig deeper into Mela 2 as the day goes by :)
    Cheers!
    /Samuel

  • @Nikolozi Sorry to bombard with messages...

I'm enjoying Mela 2 so far and thinking of 'easy' but 'fun' additions that will increase the sonic palette of the app.

As some here now I'm a C64/SID addict so when it comes to 'noise' I'm quite picky :)

When the 'Noise' waveform is selected it could have a few additional parameters to shape it?
(I'll re-use the same parameter names that are used for the 'regular' oscillators & Phase Distortion)

    (Free) = Keyboard Tracking On/Off
(Semitones&Cents) = decimation(S&H) frequency that can be modulated using envelopes, lfo's and keyboard tracking just like regular oscillators.
    (Shape) Bit-Reduction (1-16 bits)
    (Harmonics) 1-Pole LP/HP (50% no filtering 0%-50% LP, 50%-100% HP).

This would create a 'pitched' & 'playable' noisewaveform for sound effects, percussion etc.
Here's a quick 'concept' of pitched noise using Drambo.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/gi1nai6qthkztco/decimatednoise.mp4?dl=0
(White Noise into decimator with the decimator frequency controlled using an AD envelope).

Feel free to ignore if it's 'too far out of scope' for Mela 2...
    /Samuel

  • I bought those presets from sam izreal and they are really good!!!! Some very very nice plucks pads and keys!!
If you have mela 2 you need to grab those for sure!
