Pianoteq iOS is on the way?

  • Wow, this is excellent news!

I find it interesting that Modartt (Pianoteq) and GSi (VB3m), companies who said they would NEVER release an iOS version, are each releasing iOS versions. I suspect this is a combination of the tablets/phones being so powerful, the fact we seem prepared to pay more for iOS software such as B-3X or Module including all the in-apps and the fact that I have heard programmers say it is easier to program in multiple platforms using SDKs (I hope I'm getting that right). Whatever the reason or combination of reasons...this is great news.

I keep hoping that maybe Reason will come around to the idea of an iOS version of Friktion.

  • Yes, more apps with modelling would be great, @celtic_elk.

I think it is a consequence of the fact that all the companies are now developing for the Apple silicon new Macs, and the IOS devices use the same silicon, so now IOS is much more closer than never to what they are already doing.

the way Modartt works I wouldn't be suprised if you buy a "one for all license".

I don't think the iOS app store has any facility to support such a thing.

I also wouldn't assume that the iOS version will necessarily have all the features/options of the desktop version... we'll see!

Sure, you'll have to make the app free with IAPs and then add an option to register with your e-mail address. I have a bunch of apps that do that. There are some rules by Apple of course, but this can work if they want.

Of course developing an app is a lot of work, hence costs a lot of money, so I wouldn't fault them to charge extra for an iOS version. But recently they have been very generous with the new pianos that they released.

  • I bet it will be something similar to Beathawk : an initial purchase with 1 or 2 piano models. Then you can buy IAP for other models.

My guess is around $75. You can download a free demo of Pianoteq for desktop and get the idea. It's very good, especially for those who like to get under the hood. A lot of folks think it stinks, btw. Too mechanical and unrealistic. I’ll want it, but still switch around with Ravenscroft and Module American D.

I find the response pretty cool while playing it in real-time but listening back the sound just doesn’t hit the spot like the good sample pianos do…actually…I find the sound pretty disturbing

I have the same hunch. We will have another round of listening contests, I’m sure

I wonder why we don’t have a SWAMpiano yet? Wouldn’t that be the end all, be all?

Pianoteq is the “SWAM” of piano. It is a physically modeled tweaker’s delight

I guess what I should have said was “I wonder why Audio Modeling hasn’t released a SWAM piano”

This does look like it’ll do the job though! I really hope we get that iOS version.

Should they do it, they should strike hard with not less than the Fazioli F308 !
But I think it will never happen. Audio Modeling is more on instruments implying continuous expression parameters, whereas a piano model relies mostly on what happens then once the note-on event has passed.

  • No update.
Back in April, Modartt said that "a lot had been done". This let us hope that we can expect some official news before the end of the year. By "news" I mean a roadmap or, even better, a beta release. First, they will have to deal with iOS & App store purchasing options to tackle the point of how they will distribute their content (the base version + upgrades, additional piano models, etc.). Will it be IAPs like in GeoShred or single purchases like with SWAM instruments ?...

  • Any updates? :) I really want to buy it for iOS.

Since then, not a single word…
What I can tell is the latest Modartt newsletter dates back from December 2021, which is a very long gap compared to the usual frequency. This makes me think they want to announce the iOS release in the next newsletter and do everything in this regard. But I may be also totally wrong…

  • I got excited then when I saw the update. Still hoping it's coming out at some point.

  • I almost never “insta-buy” anything, let alone apps. This, however, will be one of them.

Looking forward to this soooo much. ❤️

    Same. Day one.

This is an "old" FAQ, not updated since they announced an iOS version would see the daylight.
So no relevant as an official info I think.

  • Many people (myself included) have asked them for updates on twitter. Complete radio silence for over a year. Sounds like they were in early stages of development and hadn’t actually fully committed to the product. I think they definitely spoke too soon.

They had a version that works with M1 Macbooks quite soon after M1 Macbooks came out. I highly doubt that the development itself is much of an issue.

It could be an issue. They did already have an Arm version because of the RasPi version. That would probably translate well to M1 if they do anything processor dependent. The UI though from macOS to iOS might be a complete rewrite or dependent on third party tools. Does the Mac version support AUv3 or only the older v2 AU spec? That might be a pretty big rewrite for them too.

One of my friend talked to me about Pianoteq for about 1 hour and now I want it really bad. What is a good price for the standard version? I'm not sure if there is a website like "appsliced" but for desktop software. Don't want to wait 2 years for that.

There is no « good price » to wait for because Modartt does very rarely - if not never - any offer.
The good point is you can try the plugin before buying.
Try it and, if it suits to you, buy it now. You can start with Stage then upgrade later to Standart without losing any money.

Also keep an eye out for “used” licenses. Assuming they allow resale of licenses..?

Some places to seek those out, if it is even possible (and if anyone ever resells them..), would be KVR forums, Knobcloud, and at least one FB group that comes to mind.

  • Related tangentially to the topic, it seems that the Arturia V Collection contains Modartt (I.e. Pianoteq) code in its Piano (V2 and V3). Wow!

Also, you can get a 10% discount on Pianoteq if you are a Gig Performer user (disclosure: I'm a GP beta tester).
