Why they would go for integration with a closed system (Tabletop) and not launch with Audiobus support boggles the mind. Looks like it's time to start harassing Arturia as well.
Comments
Would be good if tabletop supported Audiobus ?
ugh. I was afraid this would start happening once Akai teamed up with retronyms. I like tabletop as an idea, i really do. But as of now, even on an iPad 3, it's just too unusable. You simply can't use more than 6 or 7 'modules' in TableTop without crackling and popping and stutters...
I sincerely hope they didn't sign some kind exclusive agreement for tabletop integration. really looking forward to using this next to the iPolysix app
My first synth( and one of my all time favorites) was a minimoog. And I've been hoping that Arturia would release an IPad version of their awesome MinimoogV vst .And to my total suprise they did and it is f'ing incredible but that they released it without Audiobus support is just pure torture! I hope they add it because it really is an awesome app.
I'm just gonna leave this URL here so the Arturia guys can read it: http://audiob.us/support -> just contact us there.
Wow... they have to comply, 500 presets, Ability to layer the moog with Nlog...smh
It’s very exciting that a well known developer like Arturia is getting involved with IOS music, but until this offers virtual midi, background audio and Audiobus, it may struggle in the face of existing competition. To go with Tabletop integration rather than these definitely seems an odd choice.
I'd call it an unfortunate-for-us choice. Tabletop, presumably, has a lot of users and an ecosystem of IAPs that their customers are used to.
I wouldn't dream of buying it without those features but I would imagine tabletop (retronyms, I think) showed them some very convincing figures to get them to go that way for launch. And why not if they made it simple?
.
@Simon after reading your question I decided to open up tabletop and start adding modules until the audio hiccuped. I took a snapshot of that point and it is shown below. Each module is playing a 2 bar loop. No imported samples, the RS3 is a pretty weak synth, same goes for the tenori-clone. Each instrument leads to 1 effect (4 total) into 4 stereo tracks of audio. Small audio drops began happening. I must say though, this is the most I've filled out the screen since I got the app back when it first dropped. So they're obviously improving it.
I have to say, I really like the idea of TableTop. It has the potential to be the 'Reason' of iOS in a sense. and even if I could fill the screen with 1 instance of every instrument (which ideally there would be multiple screens or "tables"), there wouldn't be room left to fit any splitters or efx. So I'd say about 8 tracks max, though I bet you could get 12 tracks of the RS3.
And the units are just meh. Even the flagship synth of TableTop (that sharp looking guy in the bottom left corner) is just okay, just nice enough to respect, not nice enough to want to be friends with him though.
I hope this app continues to see improvements and becomes the greatness that it has the potential to be... which would require audiobus integration.
@uglykidmoe, I totally agree. It has potential to become the iOS Reason as the app improves and the harware limitations are solved with time.
I'm very happy with the release of iMini, as a previous owner of two original Minis, which I miss so much. I've been using Minimoog V for eight years or so, so I was expecting this
I've made a similar test this afternoon, right after downloading iMini (with 3 iMini instances, iMPC, RS4000, TT303, XOX, Glitchboard, Ekko). Had a few audio drops. One iMini less and it was smooth... I think iPad 4 will do it fine, I'm on iPad 3 here.
So big thumbs up to this - Audiobus for Tabletop, iMPC, and iMini is a must!!
@FRibiero that setup sounds promising. It is certainly performing better after the recent upgrade I'm noticing.
@sebastian This is a a sincere question, not a veiled suggestion: would you be open to the idea of building an Audiobus module into TableTop? Would something like that even be possible? It may seem like a silly idea, but I have my reasons for asking... maybe the two can get along nicely. It could replace that "Mr. O" output module quite nicely. <--------(veiled suggestion)
.
iMini needs to get on the Bus, this sorta thing should be common sense by now for developers, I have ipad 4th gen, & I can fill the screen with tabletop with no skipping popping ECT, but in my opinion it doesn't shake a stick at this Audiobus capability, especially with the ability to layer it with other apps like nlog for some very unique flavor!.. Until then hey.. You can't beat the price, even as a standalone it's still A Moog' & there's nothing like finally owning a Moog!
Guys as much as I love Audiobus there are other Apps that are well thought out as well. Tabletop is one of them. Their synth is not at all weak, the filter model alone is as analogue as it can get out of an ios app. The integration of effects and third party apps is superb and you dont have to buy special versions.
Compare that to Reason Rack Extension where you shell out extra cash for these versions.
I remember having a twitter exchange with Retronyms shortly after Audiobus Release, and they said they were interested. I personally do think it will support Audiobus because its closed eco system makes it even easier for other developers to hop on Audiobus without actually having to integrated it themselfs. Besides you could pair Tabletop with a Sequencer finally wich meets all the requirements the Tabletop community could have for sequencing which are hard to do in Tabletop as it is layed out now.
Just relax, we are all a little spoiled
Just you guys wait.
@Sebastian Patience is a virtue and there ain't many saints around here!
@Sebastian You are a tease!
@Sebastian Are we talking days, weeks, months, years, decades? Surely you can be that vague ;-)
@Coolwatercorey I correct there is nothing like having a light, flat portable Minimoog in your carry bag
@Oliverlmseng
Reason provides an actual modular experience with powerful routing/modulation options. Also, a Reason rack can go on, and on, and on....
The RS4000? I would respectfully disagree with that whole statement. The RS4000 is a weak synth. It has no mod routings and a thin sound.
You seem to think I'm knockin Retronyma for their closed eco, but I'm not. I own everything in their arsenal - except iMini & iMPC. I have no problems with IAPs.
And while I'll admit I may be a little spoiled, knowing that won't allow me to accept sub-par sounds for the sake of novel workflows. I have a lot of praise for Retronyms, but TableTop has a long way to go in terms of professional functionality. Until then, I will not even compare them to Reason. That's a disservice to Propellerheads.
Now if there were CV/Gate on that iMini, and on some TT modules, that'd be the start of a different story
Wow @uglykidmoe, haven't even referenced at all to your post but well .
The comparison was this: I buy iMini on the App Store and get to use it both in Tabletop and Standalone for the price of one App.
In Reason on the other hand I have i.e. a license for the Rob Papen Predator, i can't use that in Reason as a RE. I have to buy it again. Which is a limitation of the dev model and business rules Propellerheads have set up for the RE system.
That's all the comparison was about .
Regarding the RS4000, tastes are different and so are categorizations as in the sound is thin. I for myself rather have a thin sound I can quickly fix than a bloated more fat sound like i.e. Access Virus where you have to equalize a lot to fit it into a mix.
So as in taste, workflows are a very subjective matter.
Understandable. Didn't mean to seem aggressive, so apologize if that is how it read. I just wanted to be clear about what I believe are TT's shortcomings. I do think the interface is slick and intriguing, and shows great promise. I'm not remorseful about my purchase of TT, but as of yet it has not earned a place in my production setup either.
No worries me neither .
Well its hard to say that the ipad has a fixed slot in my production set up. I use Ableton Live and Logic and have a lot of synths there, ni massive, omnisphere, zebra2, nexus 2, imposcar2 etc. But this i can't take with me. The iPad currently is a really good Studio Extension for me, to refine ideas on the go in the train to sketch something out which i then take back to my production rig.
OK just made a video demo of the iMini and this highlights a very important reason why this incredible synth should have AB support..As a standalone it has no ACP or record function..however you can ACP in tabletop so in theory you could build something in tabletop and ACP into Cubasis or DAW..But the massive drawback is this, when iMini is running in Tabletop it only functions as a Monophonic synth so all the great poly sounds are useless, add this to the fact that on its own it could only be used with external recording gear..Its still a brilliant app.but needs AB support to make it useful inside the iPad..heres the vid..enjoy.
@OliverImseng I actually use almost that same setup, except instead of Massive and Zebra I use Absynth and DIVA... no Nexus2... and I typically rewire Reason into Live.
But I've been completing whole ambient/electronic tracks on my iPad lately. And I like it. Sure, I still bounce them to Logic for mixing, but with pretty minimal processing. And given the plethora of apps which I've owned since iPad 1 days, I've become much more... discerning about what takes up space on my mobile mini-studio.
@thesoundtestroom thanks for the vid!
Another great video...thank you
One question...in the connect panel.when you tap the midi symbol, you are told you can connect to 'network session 1'.
I set up a midi Chanel in cudasis,(network session 1)
I thought I'd be able to trigger imini from cubasis, but it doesn't want to play ball.
It can do this??or is it just for external keyboard?
Inreresting I'll have a look, but I think even if you could control iMini from cubasis I think all that would record would be the midi data and no sound, but let me see..I must admit that I only got the app today but I did not notice any detailed midi stuff going on there..
Ok thanks.
@thesoundtestroom How does it compare to Animoog?
Thats weird..I was thinking earlier that her are 2 synths born of the same company, I know Moog didn't develop the iMini but Arturia worked very closely with them..Animoog is the very latest in wavetable technology and here we have possible an emulation of the most famous synth of all time..and when you listen they both have that rich phatt Moog sound..thay are both great in different way...you will learn a lot about anologue synth programming from the iMini, if you wanted to go down that road or just play and tweak one the 500 presets..I wish it was on the bus.
