I know I’ve been asking for a lot but I’m really enjoying the app and I’m excited to see how it can grow.

Here’s my current list, some of which have been discussed above.
    1. Copy/paste bars
    2. Mass-backup capabilities
    3. State-saving or ability to set defaults (save last selected tempo on reopening app or a set number of bars each new generated beat)
    4. Ability to open an Init/blank project

    Edit:
    5. Allow user to lock Major or Minor when selecting key

  • edited December 2021

    Nice list, thanks!

    1. already working on this
    2. still considering the effort vs. added value
    3. last used BPM can be already remembered, just tap the lock icon in the BPM panel; remember the number of bars is a nice idea as well - I'm adding to my TODO list
    4. +5. excellent ideas; going straight to my TODO list
  • VERY excited for this cinematic update. thank you so much! +1 for the minor major suggestion from @DukeWonder

    Awesome, thank you.

Regarding number 3, the lock stays enabled but the numerical value doesn’t stay when closing and reopening the app.

  • When do the masses get to play with Cinematic styles?

@AntoninCharvat is there a backup option, similar to how Pure Acid lets you export a backup of al of your projects? It would be a great option as I have generated a significant number of loops that I want to modify before I export the audio, and I’m always paranoid that an update might wipe stuff.

I'm afraid that's not possible right now. I don't even have something like that in my TODO list. You can export your projects one by one and then import them again, but that would be time consuming activity. I will consider to add this for sure. However I'm always trying to avoid any breaking changes in track models, so this should really not happen, unless I screw something really bad

Did the update hit where you are or are you beta testing?

Cinematic style is still work in progress only on Test Flight.

Yes I am on the beta. I saw a couple others mentioned it so I thought it was probably out on the regular version. My mistake, typically I wouldn’t really mention anything on a beta unless it was ok’d, sorry about that.

Number 2 Maybe you could just back up the midi files of all saved tracks, way less space. Then people can export and back up their own audio if they want.

  • +1 on #5 as well.

Maybe a handful more scales to boot.

  • Loving the cinematic update. Very atmospheric, right up my street. Good work @AntoninCharvat

No harm done. Got the update today 😁

  • I love/hate this kind of app, I think they can produce nice sounds but at the end of the day I feel no satisfaction.

  • Cinematic style is out, as you've noticed :) Let me know if you manage to create something really interesting! Also let me know if you think it really sucks lol :)

Oh yes, you're right. That was intended behavior at first, but now I'm considering to change it as you've mentioned before.

No problem. Actually it was me who posted a video of cinematic style sneak peek two weeks ago. It was no secret :)

Well you need to avoid of using only the generator/randomizer in your setup. That will always be boring. I believe it can be satisfactory when you use these tools for inspiration only or as a "base layer" when creating. The same can be said when using loops. And let's admit that loops are used heavily and are commonly accepted, even in the commercial production. And what about MIDI packs with pre-created melodies even with "ready-to-be-used" accompaniments? There is a really great conversation on @MobileMusicPro YT channel about A.I. music future which I really recommend everyone to listen to. Beatly is not based on A.I., it actually is just a randomizer with some predefined algorithms, but still I'm sure this topic is relevant and guys have some reasonable points why and when use or not to use these tools.

    A few thoughts/questions:

What is the thinking behind the bpm in the app? I’ve noticed especially with the Cinematic update, I’m getting bpms as low as in the 30’s. Is it all in half time? Is there a specific reason for this? For example in many daws, the bpm is set by default to 120. Now if I start generating patterns in Beatly at that tempo, they typically sound way too fast. If I’m using nothing but Beatly that’s probably no big deal, I can lower it to taste, but I’d imagine if I tried to combine a project I started in NS2 at 120 bpm with a Beatly project at that same tempo, things would sound very busy. And since Ableton Link is in the mix, it sort of begs the question.

The midi out update is a total game changer for this app and much much appreciated, however I do find the built in sounds to be quite nice, especially with some rudimentary mixing via the faders. Meaning sometimes, I find myself just wanting to build things up all within Beatly. Which brings me to my point: it would be nice to have ALL of the built in sounds available across genre modes. Like what if I want to generate some chip tune patterns, but see what they sound like with the default mode sounds? Or default patterns but with cinematic sounds?

Not saying any of this is right or wrong or that it should be this way or that way, just got me thinking. Thanks again for your awesome work

My understanding is that most modern songs are in double time. 120 in regular time is actually pretty fast. Think about your drums, do you use one or two bars for a single pattern? If you’re doing 4 on the floor, is your first snare on 1.1 or 1.3?

  • Anyone else getting RuneScape vibes from the cinematic mode? Very interesting stuff.

@AntoninCharvat I will say that the algorithm for cinematic feels a bit more chaotic at times than Default or Chiptune. There can be some very sharp transitions between measures and bars that make sense in more energetic music. But the slower, softer cinematic can become pretty jarring. Lessening the frequency of time signature changes and chord changes in the middle of a bar would possibly help.

  • @DukeWonder you could be right I never considered that to be honest. Interesting

The thinking behind the tempo is basic musical theory. Here's the thing - I am accidentally also a (sort of) symphonic music composer and as an app developer I tend to stick to some patterns I'm used to respect from composition. The cinematic style is targeting the slowest tempos possible (not faster than adagio) on purpose. Simply put - it's easier for me to implement slow tempo music generator when talking about "orchestral" music. As of now the range is 30 to 60 BPM. I will increase the upper bound to 70 - that will suit better to the adagio tempo. Of course all other apps you use in your setup must respect this value, otherwise it will be mayhem

it would be nice to have ALL of the built in sounds available across genre modes.

Funny story - until the last released version, this was possible - but by mistake, it was a bug I fixed. I hope.
But considering you would find it useful I will think about how to implement it as a feature. I agree it would be a great expansion of the sound palette.

I agree. Sometimes the result sounds pretty raw. I believe I will improve these algorithms yet. I just wanted the generated tunes to be really diverse, so I set the constraints maybe way too "benevolent". Luckily there's like millions of possible combinations that can be generated - all of them can't be so bad, can they?

I agree that being able to select any instrument for any genre would be nice. Also being able to lock the selected instrument as a parameter would be fantastic.

Haha yeah don’t get me wrong, certainly not all bad. I have some nice tunes generated and saved for tweaking.

I’m curious if you’ve played RuneScape and if that was at all an inspiration for the cinematic mode. It reminds me very much of some of the tunes from that game.

Never even heard of this game.. but I'm curious about the soundtrack! Could you PM me some youtube links (if available) of this music?

It’s a great game. I much prefer Old School Runescape which is significantly closer to what I played in high school than the successor Runescape 3.

Damn you got some aloe to go with that burn? Lol it’s all good

  • Haha sorry, I didn’t mean it to sound bad like that lol. It’s just my clumsy english. It causes these… situations… time to time :) Sure we’re all good

I need to remember the aloe thing. I’m literally laughing now here…

  • I'm amazed every time I open this app up to see how it's grown since the start (but I'm also usually amazed how much it's grown in the last week as well!). Well done! There aren't many apps where you can be excited to see what's this frequently!

  • On little annoyance in the app:
After every update, the first time you open Beatly, it has a pop up notification about a new update.

I will remove this "new version" notification anyway, as it has no real added value now and it's nothing else than overhead to me.

  • Thanks guys!

Btw it's already on Test Flight. There is still room for beta testers.
If anyone here interested, drop me a PM.

  • Live improvisation and fun with Beatly in my basement. All was fun and games until my beloved wife interrupted me calling me for dinner lol :)
