Awesome. Looks like the 1TB model is the sweet spot for me.
Lol 😂
I know the feeling.
Unified Memory Architecture (I think it's called). TLDR; the way RAM is handled on the M1 is totally different.
Dual boot to MacOS, that would be pretty handy now it's on the same chip.
The pricing is eye watering on 12.9....1400 and you only get 512 GB
Standing ovation
Were you privy to the new iPad Pro for development?
In a case the bump is unnoticeable.
Which add's another $100 to the price
I always get a case or keyboard case. I like to protect my investments.
No, not at all. But I read something somewhere when the M1 Air, MBP and Mini launched about how the M1 uses memory and it's totally different to more conventional (for want of a better term) chip architectures. I'm assuming the same applies to the iPad Pro with M1.
The old way of thinking of RAM is dead. Welcome to the world of the Unified Memory Architecture.

iMacs are 8GB RAM base, "configurable to 16GB."
The iPad Pro's going M1 makes me wonder...
...what if even the 'lower-end' iPad's get M1 (Just clocked slower and less ram & storage options) before iPadOS15 ships?
Could it be that Apple plays it smart here and keeps the 'Ax' chips for iPhones and AppleTV and all 'new' iPad's will go Mx?
I'm in no rush what so ever to get a new iPad at the moment...
As far as I remember, that means that the CPU and the GPU access the same single memory pool. It’s faster but does not mean you need less memory for memory hungry tasks like editing huge video files
Time to start collecting cash for 12.9" 1TB 16RAM (512 would be completely enough, but 16RAM it's tempting). So far I had a max of 10.5 but I promised myself that the next one will be 12.9
M1 chipset supports two thunderbolt ports, why limit the iPadPro to just one????
Where do you put two ports on a handheld device such that you can use them both while still holding it comfortably, in any orientation?
Yes because the M1 Could just as easily have been called an A14Z turbo Pro. Or Nigel.
M1 is to A14 as the A12Z is to the A12.
One of the reasons it will be such a big jump over the A12Z in the previous iPad pros is because iPad Pros skipped the A13. And also because Apple have been making A series SoCs ever more suitable for Macs, and those developments are good for both systems.
But basically Macs got iPad chips. And iPad chips got really, really fast.
@moodscaper is right. Try an 8GB MacBook Air and you won’t even notice.
Right next to the other-one. On the desk it's most of the time in 'landscape mode' and 'portrait mode' when hand-held...
Yeah, that's part of it, but when you factor in lightning-fast NVMe drives, you end up with virtual memory performance that's comparable with actual RAM in an Intel-based machine.
Scrolling ovation
That's how you use it. Apple can't design just for your use case; they have to design for multiple use cases. I use my iPad Pro 12.9" in all four orientations at various times, while holding it. There's nowhere you could put another port that wouldn't get in the way at some point.
@drcongo - indeed! I know of several iOS developers who've upgraded their development Intel MBPs to M1 Airs - it's crazy.

With a cable connected?
Yes, since I still use wired headphones 99% of the time.
Then just use one of the ports if you don't need to other one
Curious if there is any AU performance improvements with these changes. 11'' looks tempting as a new primary iPad.
The fully maxed out iPad Pro is only £1,999 in the uk.
Whether intentionally or not, you're avoiding my point. The iPad is designed for use primarily as a hand-held device. There is no way to put two ports on a hand-held device such that they can both be in use while the device is being held, in any of its possible orientations, without in some way compromising the user's ability to hold the thing. ("Port" in this case includes a headphone jack - I sincerely believe that if Apple thought they could have gotten away with releasing the original iPad without a 3.5mm jack, they'd have done so, but they perceived that wireless headphones didn't yet have the necessary market penetration.) The iPad already supports USB docks, so anyone who wants multiple ports can have them, in whatever configuration you can find a dock for.
“only” is doing a lot of work there!
