I’ll probably get one. I’m wondering how many of my apps won’t work anymore though.

Sorry, but why might your apps not work?

Yes, there’s no reason to assume there will be any unforeseen incompatibilities.

I’ll wait for iPad Pro 12.0” widescreen (I cannot stand squarish screen).

Better yet, I’ll wait for MacPad - a Surface-like touch-laptop with detachable keyboard and a kickstand.
(there you go Apple - I even gave you a cool trademark with my fertile imagination to start working on it)

Because iPads can never measure up to the raw power and performance of laptops/desktops with macOS and desktop apps.

Haha. No way I’d want that. The Surface is a horrible compromise. The iPad continues to evolve intelligently.

For me they could make an iPad twice as thick, completely wrapped in a heat sync so there is no heat throttling at all and I would be happy. Throw that sucker on a swivel arm and chill laying on the couch.

  • At least now, we can expect LumaFusion to have 10-12 video tracks

  • I should be able run a couple of instances of Model 15....if they don’t mess the code up again.

Never have to get up ... if only it could cook.

DIsagree. I WILL be getting a new 12.9, but for the way I use it this Surface has been a brilliant buy.

At the risk of derailing, how do you use it? I don’t know anyone with a Surface.

I used one and found it a bad blend of form and function and the UI was a complete mess. Your mileage may vary.

The only issue I can see is if there are any incompatibilities due to iOS 14.5. From the betas it doesn’t appear to be of any major concern.

Posh PC laptop, but has taken over from the 12.9 for televisual duties and also is my Maschine MK3 workhorse for which it and its touch screen works very well.

So laptop with occasional touchscreen use? It’s interesting to me how many of the reviews I’ve seen of the Surface basically treat it as a laptop, with little or no mention of the touch capabilities. That seems to suggest something about its usefulness (or not) as a primarily-touch device.

  • Apple now needs to justify all the hardware upgrades in the iPad Pro. Hope better pro apps will come to the iPadOS. I had lost hope for logic on iPad however I would like to use it to mix on the couch with an Apple Pencil etc. I just got a MacBook Air with the M1 chip for now. Logic is just thousand times better than any DAW on the iPad. At least for my use cases. I record with the microphone mostly and some Midi work. I need flextime flex pitch more synthesizers state saving, converting drummer tracks to midi, track stacks etc. These are all essential for me.
I guess the same thing goes for video and photo editing as well. Apps need to improve.
For me the basic iPad does what this new iPad Pro does in the music world for my use case.

iMacs are 8GB RAM base, "configurable to 16GB."

It looks like they just could not fit more memory on that tiny motherboard. Same thing happened with M1 MacBooks - up to 16GB RAM, up to 2TB SSD
For example, 27” Intel iMac can have up to 128 GB and 8 TB. I believe future 27” iMac and 16” MBP will have more memory too. Damn, I’ll have to sell a kidney to get one of those :D

There isn’t any memory on the motherboard, it’s all in the M1 package.

    https://www.macworld.com/article/234843/m1-macs-memory-isnt-what-it-used-to-be.html

The biggest difference is that in the M1, the memory is a part of the M1 architecture itself. There’s no memory slot or slots on the motherboard of an M1 Mac, nor is there an area where a memory chip has been permanently soldered on. Instead, the memory is integrated into the same package that contains the M1 itself.

I'm not alone wanting to have two ports on it ;)

I fully expect the new iPads Pro (yes, that’s grammatically correct) to start acting more like real heavy-duty production computers with iOS tuned versions of Logic, Final Cut, etc.

But something I heard yesterday intrigued me... if the new Macs can run iOS apps, why shouldn’t these M1 equipped iPads be able to run MacOS? ;)

From what I can tell with my limited experience touching devices / monitors is that Apple is miles ahead in that game. Some of of that may have to do with UIs simply not being designed for touch when they are born on desktop, but just on a hardware multi-touch level it seems to me that it will probably take a long time until the current Apple quality is standard across all platforms. Still, next time I need a tablet for commuting I may just sacrifice touch quality for better software.

Because macOS isn't designed for touch. "Capable" does not automatically mean "suitable."

My bad. I'm doing badly with tonal interpretation online this week, it seems.

    Pricing is up, y'all. https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-ipad/ipad-pro

11" Pros start at $799 for 128GB and go up to $1899(!) for 2TB.

12.9" Pros start at $1099 for 128GB and go up to $2199(!!) for 2TB.

For that kind of money you’d think they could at least throw in a headphone jack and a USB port.

$1,799.00 for the 1TB iPad Pro model is totally doable. And there’s a credit for turning in the old model (up to $550), which will be very helpful.

They only offered me $50 for my 12.9 2017 pro. Why would anyone take that deal?

  • @McM said:
    13” MacBook Air 256GB SSD $999
12.9” iPad Pro 256GB storage $1199...and I still have to buy a keyboard.

Just makes me pause and think, “why iPad pad pro?”

Animoog and Geoshred (or Velocity kb).

I get £235 for my mint condition 12.9 2017 pro, are you sure you entered the correct serial?
Still ridiculous though, they never give enough to make it worth a trade in.

As if I'd sell my 12.9 ipad for that!

Agreed. I would still buy an iPad to use all the great apps I’ve purchased over the years. I’m just not sure I’ll buy a Pro
