  • iPad Pro vs. Mac Air seems a little muddy now...

The fully maxed out iPad Pro is only £1,999 in the uk.

“only” is doing a lot of work there!

Indeed. If I bought one my misses would use my scrotum sack as kickboxing practice.

I might sell a few things and get the £999 one though.

iPad Pro with M1, wait for MacBook Air 2 with M2.

When comparing the top end iPad Pro to the bottom end MacBook Air, and the iPad Pro is more expensive than the MacBook Air with I think the same processor and memory specs, it “muddies the water” :s

  • So we really benefit from 16gb ram? Or is it just some dead ram because audio apps don’t really need ram or the ram is used for the storage management

@yug said: As far as I remember, that means that the CPU and the GPU access the same single memory pool. It’s faster but does not mean you need less memory for memory hungry tasks like editing huge video files

Yeah, that's part of it, but when you factor in lightning-fast NVMe drives, you end up with virtual memory performance that's comparable with actual RAM in an Intel-based machine.

Swap is always slower than RAM, in this case several times slower. But I guess if you are not working with huge files, you will be alright.
Try opening a 10 GB file in Photoshop and running a couple of VMware VMs at the same time... But that’s what new M1 Mac Pro’s will be for I guess

The top-end iPad Pro has the same specs (M1 with 16GB RAM and 2TB SSD) as the top-end MacBook Air, and costs about US$150 more.

If one has a need to deal with legacy files and systems, the Air might be the choice. If one has chosen to go the iOS/iPadOS route, iPads are the way to go.

The way I see it, either you want the tablet experience or you want the laptop experience. Those two choices are now closer than ever in the under-the-hood specs - and at very nearly the same price point - but the fundamental laptop vs. tablet decision still applies.

    Right?
    13” MacBook Air 256GB SSD $999
12.9” iPad Pro 256GB storage $1199...and I still have to buy a keyboard.

Just makes me pause and think, “why iPad pad pro?”

If you have to buy a keyboard, then I have to question whether a tablet was your best choice in the first place.

I’ve got an iMac and a MacBook Pro and I use my 12 inch iPad Pro all the time. Easy to use and easy to lug around.

Not necessarily...just comparing apples to apples for what you get for the money.

It’s a good point...missing spec in the comparison is touch screen vs. no touch screen

And the iPad Pro screen has a higher pixel density. And there's all those additional cameras/sensors.

Indeed. I make music on an iPad to escape my laptop which I’m tied to all day for work. Definitely going for a 1TB 12” iPad, will be getting the 16” M1 MBP for work as soon as they’re available though, and if the music iOS apps on desktop thing ever gets any better I might get a mini for the studio too.

  • $2400 for a tablet is just _______________.

iMacs are 8GB RAM base, "configurable to 16GB."

It looks like they just could not fit more memory on that tiny motherboard. Same thing happened with M1 MacBooks - up to 16GB RAM, up to 2TB SSD
For example, 27” Intel iMac can have up to 128 GB and 8 TB. I believe future 27” iMac and 16” MBP will have more memory too. Damn, I’ll have to sell a kidney to get one of those :D

  • Sorely tempted to try the larger iPad finally. I like the portability of 11”, but if I’m honest I rarely travel with it anymore.

  • Somehow I missed that the M1 is going into the 11” as well... that will be an amazing device.

The only hesitation right now is the unknowns for iPadOS 15. Will external displays be better-supported? Will the OS support the extra capacity of Thunderbolt 4? If there are enough improvements I could see this eliminating my need for any desktop beyond a network connected older Mac Mini that I remote into.

Also I wonder, if there’s ever a convergence in the future where an iPad can run MacOS, then maybe these devices would be on the compatible hardware list.

I can complete that sentence: "a little more expensive than a similarly-specced MacBook Air."

Question: if people don’t blink at the fact that laptops cost about as much as desktops, why should we be perturbed that laptop-sized and laptop-specced tablets cost about the same as laptops? Is everybody just mad that their tools are increasingly priced like tools and not toys?

  • Now I need to juggle some money and sell my trusty 2018 pro. Wow M1 and 8GB Ram is SICK!
I was stunned as the rare case happened and the leakers were all wrong and Tim apple took the M1 into the iPad Pro boom

It’s just a tablet. It’ll throttle speeds really quickly, it depends on its battery, which won’t last long when doing resource heavy tasks (even with the throttling). Different operating system, different possibilities. Etc..

    Bed

    Why bed?

    Car
    Motorcycle
    Why motorcycle?

If you want a keyboard and a mouse get a MacBook.
If you don’t, get an iPad
I don’t get you guys comparing a MacBook with an iPad, I find it intriguing.

  • Putting the M1 chip in the iPad Pro will help developers unify their apps for both platforms. I’m sure a lot of developers will have apps on both now. Lumafusion has already promised some amazing updates such as editing directly from external media. I’m sure thunderbolt 4 has a lot to do with that.

I wonder what’s to come on the audio side of things. Overall I’m excited to see what happens over the course of 6 months or so

  • I am pretty happy they took the step of putting the M1 chip in the iPad. I will be waiting for gen 2 or 3 before upgrading my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5. I do not want to spend that money to be a beta tester.

The real world result may not be what we are expecting but I sure hope so.

That’s pretty cool. They’re saying the new iPads will allow using an external drive for video editing work with large files. That’s really impressive.

  • I’ll probably get one. I’m wondering how many of my apps won’t work anymore though.
