New problem - ipad will not charge
Update - after ten mins of u responsiveness the WiFi finally turned itself on and is now working. Anyone experienced this? What the hell could cause this?
Original message -
My WiFi network has no problem - my android phone is connected fine. Ipad looked like it was connected but I couldn't open any websites. I tried resetting my router etc. No luck. I restarted my device, no luck. I hard reset my device, now the problem is even worse - it literally wont even let me turn WiFi on. I try to turn it on and it just doesn't react. The elan slider is there but when I drag it right to turn on it just stays unresponsive. So now I can't even connect via my phone as a hotpot, which I was doing ten minutes ago fine. I'm on 14.5 for my sins. Any suggestions? This seems like a huge problem, have never experienced anything like it. Have tried multiple restarts etc since..... Nada....

The 'Wifi Private Address' thing can sometimes cause issues this since the device randomly changes MAC-Address and requests a new IP for the same host name before the previous lease-time has expired.
Check how many 'clients' your Wifi router maxes out at and what the lease-time is configured to.
I bumped into this problems when I noticed that both my iPad and iPhone both had 30+ entries each...
So when you're at home I suggest turning Private Address OFF in the settings for the network you're connected to.
(After I did this both my devices stay connected without any issues).
Cheers!
OK, so now the ipad will not charge. Charger is working - I tested it with my phone. Wtf? Any thoughts? I was using the anker USB hub I've been using for months when th is happened. Now it will not charge with either that on or without it
Have you got another charger you can try? One of my Anker hubs stopped putting out enough juice for an iPad but can still charge a phone.
The fancy mophie power bank I bought the other day is also not charging it
@tahiche I've got a horrible feeling I'm having a similar experience to what you had
Not only that, the ipad seems to be just turning itself off and restarting randomly
I strongly suspect this is relaylted to the anker hub. The hub is also no longer sending audio through its headphone jack, though when I attach the headphones I do hear a little clicky sound. Worst thing of all, I accidently let my apple care expire.
This does not sound good mate. Hope it fixes itself soon.
May need to get the battery replaced.
If you see smoke or flames erupting from your iPad, consider unplugging it. 👀
Have u heard of that being a thing? Is that what happened Tahiche? I'm kicking myself I let that apple care expire.
And does this mean going forward that I can no longer trust anker hubs? This is already my 2nd hub that either stopped working or caused problems. Ipad Pro with no headphone cable is just a money pit, I'm so pissed off
Ouch. Yeah, it’s costly to replace an iPad battery and it’s best done by Apple… Might be time to get a new iPad instead?
I guess this a USB-C iPad (model?). Try connecting only the charger, powered off if possible, and leave it alone for 24 hours.
Is your hub one of those that connects right next to the iPad, with no wire like other dongles? Have you experienced momentary connection glitches?
It just keeps turning itself on when I turn it off
It just keeps turning itself on when to turn it off > @NeuM said:
I've only had this ipad two years. New ipad Pro 2021 would mean new smart keyboard too..... Ouch. I don't need a new ipad
Yes, USB C. Powered off sounds good in theory except that it keeps turning itself on! Yes, it is a hub that connects with no wires etc, hard against the ipad and yes, I have experienced momentary connection glitches
Oh, man. Not a great situation. Sorry to hear that.
A new ipad Pro with smart keyboard would pretty much wipe out the entire money I have made from youtube and PayPal in the year I've been doing this channel. Not good at all 😉
Ugh. Of all the rotten luck.
Let's see, hopefully a battery replacement and a new hub (I thought anker were one of the approved ones ffs) will fix it
I have an ipad that can sometimes turn itself off around the 40% mark. I then go to turn it on and it gives the battery is dead 'charge me' indicator. I plug it in and let it charge for a minute then turn it on and boom it says 40% again. Ruh-ohh Raggy.
If it doesn't turn itself off it exponentially dies off. I can actually watch it tick down faster and faster to the point where once it is at 20% it goes in a couple minutes.
I had a repair shop replace my iPhone 4S battery once for around 60$. Been using it just fine for about four years since the replacement. Thinking once the pandy is over I will get this iPad battery replaced that way. It is only a base model and Apple prices are so crazy high I may as well give it a shot. Even if it just buys me an extra year or so that gets me to the next base model release. If they botch it, so be it, a cheap roll of the dice to not have to toss it in the bin tomorrow.
FWIW, I had a similar problem a few weeks ago with my 2018 12.9 iPP. My first clue was the headphone dongle stopped working, then it wouldn’t charge, then it started rebooting spontaneously. Took it into a Genius Bar with less than two weeks under AppleCare, and after lots of diagnostics, determined the USB port had failed physically, even though the diagnostics didn’t catch that. I learned that it’s possible to extend AppleCare month-to-month if you apply within 30 days of the two-year coverage expiring.
Opposed to (most ?) iPhones the iPad digitizer/glass is glued on - it‘s a true challenge to open. Local offer here is 99€ for iPad battery replacement.
I was planning to extend it during that 30 day period, but time flew and I never ended up doing it.
Yeah, I had a bad experience with my older ipad Pro which needed a new battery, where I took it to a place where they did a real shoddy job on it. I had to get the owner of the shop to do it in the end, he did a decent enough job and I ended up getting it for free, but it was a right pain in the arse.
I will check if my dongle allows me to hear through the headphones btw, good potential diagnostic too. So huh, the USB port may need replaced....
@uncledave what is the logic behind the 24 hour wait?
Hi!
I’m sorry you’re having problems. Really sucks.
Is it charging now?. Without the hub?.
In my case something (probably the hub but it’s unclear) caused damage to some chip or whatever and the iPad either wouldn’t charge or just went completely black and unresponsive.
As you I’ve gone through 3.
1st time thought it was just a faulty unit.
2nd time I saw a pattern or common scenario and blamed the powerbank, which seemed like the obvious candidate.
3rd time with a new powerbank I’ve blamed the satechi hub which I replaced with an Apple one.
I’d get an Apple original hub. I know it sucks, it’s expensive and has no headphone output... but it’s probably the safest bet. There’s something wrong with the usb c port.
I haven’t gotten any info from Apple so it’s all about guessing...
I'm also wondering whether and how the problem connecting to WiFi just before I noticed the non-charging etc was related...
Common factor: Both of you used a hub that attaches directly to the iPad, with the resulting magnified potential for twisting the connecter.
