New problem - ipad will not charge

  • Yeah, no sound through dongle, I guess it is the USB C connector has the problem. Maybe caused by iffy hub weakening the connection?

  • edited May 2021

@Gavinski said:! Yes, it is a hub that connects with no wires etc, hard against the ipad and yes, I have experienced momentary connection glitches

If you haven’t fried your iPad already ditch that hub ASAP.
There’s long educated guesses at my post where some forum members that know their stuff contributed.
My impression, which I feel strongly, is that when the hub connects/disconnects frequently it causes a sort of “confusion” in the iPad. The usb c does both power and data. If the iPad (the dedicated chip) is “stuck” in data mode and it receives power it might send the power down the data lane and screw up the iPad.
My stupid metaphor, but useful, is food going down the air pipe...
This happens more often with those “brick” designs. I now have the apple one and you can tell the connection is a lot sturdier, less prone to disconnect.

Yeah, I followed some of that thread. I will get a new hub. But what the hell to get?

  • @wim yes, but I always felt it would surely be better to have something that sits flush against it rather than something heavy hanging off a wire. You just can't win. Apple, give us f***ing proper devices with enough ports and a headphone jack for God's sake.

  • Wireless Bluetooth maybe the only safe way ahead with these new devices which limits u style of music cos of latency!

I've got a bad feeling I am gonna have to make my video on my old lightning ipad, which means no audio interface which means no decent mic..... What a shitshow. Meanwhile the damn device is just turning itself on after I turn it off

  • Just now after a restart I also had the screen flash purple then it turned itself off. What could that be? That has happened a few times.... 😂 🤣😢

Does the "Pro" in iPad Pro stand for "Problems"?

  • If you open Settings | Privacy | Analytics Data, then look for the panic events, there may be a clue in there. When I was having the spontaneous reboots there were dozens of panic events, which convinced the Genius Bar tech that he couldn't rely on the diagnostics alone.

The issue here may be that the direct connection is magnifying any torque that gets applied to that connection when plugging or unplugging the hub, or when it's jostled. When you grab or bump a cable nub, you have a fraction of the leverage applying twisting force that you do with that big hub surface to grab. Twist too much and it might be possible to have a contact cross two connectors, resulting in a short. There's also the potential for a lot more static electricity to jump between the hub and the iPad with the increased surface area of your hand and the contact with the metal case of the iPad. You wouldn't get this with an insulated cable.

All I'm observing is that of the two people reporting this behavior recently, both have had this style of direct connect hub.

I hope your iPad ends up being OK. :|

Thnx, I reckon you are right. Well, what is the recommendation for a cabled hub?

I don't know that I'm right. It's just a guess that seems plausible.

I can't recommend any hubs as I'm still using Lightning/CCK and have a headphone jack onboard. For others' purposes though, you need one with a headphone jack?

At a minimum I need one with USB C charge in, a headphone jack (ideally which can receive mic input from inline mic, though none I have had so far do that, also ideally one with no weird artifacts when sounds release too) amd a regular USB A to connect an interface. Hdmi port would be good too. Or hey, I might just switch to desktop once and for all and be done with this kind of nonsense 😉

FWIW, I had a similar problem a few weeks ago with my 2018 12.9 iPP. My first clue was the headphone dongle stopped working, then it wouldn’t charge, then it started rebooting spontaneously. Took it into a Genius Bar with less than two weeks under AppleCare, and after lots of diagnostics, determined the USB port had failed physically, even though the diagnostics didn’t catch that. I learned that it’s possible to extend AppleCare month-to-month if you apply within 30 days of the two-year coverage expiring.

I will check if my dongle allows me to hear through the headphones btw, good potential diagnostic too. So huh, the USB port may need replaced....

@uncledave what is the logic behind the 24 hour wait?

Allow any protective logic to time out, and determine that a safe power connection has been made, then to fully charge the battery. Just a number, but needs to be long enough.

  • I don’t have any solution unfortunately but I wanted to ask, were you using the hub to charge your iPad? I’m asking cos I just want to avoid doing that myself, normally I just use the charging block but occasionally I’ll use my hub

both also use(d) a power bank.
Such items are controlled by software and with USB power negotiations not being a simple protocol things may go wrong in that part of the setup.
At least it makes tracking the culprit quite difficult, as @tahiche ‘s story told.

Does the "Pro" in iPad Pro stand for "Problems"?

Now that the single core of the base model has exceeded my 2017 Pro (and they support pencil now) I am firmly a base model forever dude from now on. Too many other Pro-blems (Hiyo! (thanks)) from Apple shenanigans to even bother with anything else. Oh and headphone jack, shit, too easy.

Apple put a real, honest to goodness headphone jack on their brand new iMacs. They should put them back on their iPad Pros… which, fully spec’ed out, can easily be more expensive than the iMac!

Update - after ten mins of u responsiveness the WiFi finally turned itself on and is now working. Anyone experienced this? What the hell could cause this?

    Original message -

My WiFi network has no problem - my android phone is connected fine. Ipad looked like it was connected but I couldn't open any websites. I tried resetting my router etc. No luck. I restarted my device, no luck. I hard reset my device, now the problem is even worse - it literally wont even let me turn WiFi on. I try to turn it on and it just doesn't react. The elan slider is there but when I drag it right to turn on it just stays unresponsive. So now I can't even connect via my phone as a hotpot, which I was doing ten minutes ago fine. I'm on 14.5 for my sins. Any suggestions? This seems like a huge problem, have never experienced anything like it. Have tried multiple restarts etc since..... Nada....

Problems with the iPad Pro pale in comparison to the problems I’ve had over the years with desktop computers. Just no comparison. It’s so easy to get spoiled when a product is really great.

  • I do wonder if the overall 'Quality Control' has gone down like a sinking stone over at Apple?!

I'd gone totally nuts if I had gotten a >$1000 iPad with all these crazy issues...
...especially considering my old iPad Air 2 is still kicking it even though battery capacity is not stellar and performances with newer apps is not 'amazing'. Considering it's age it's an amazing piece of gear with practically zero hardware issues.

I do wonder if the 'iPad 9' will still have a headphone jack or if the iPad 8 is the last one to include it.
(Apple is not totally eradicating the 3.5mm jack consider the iMac and other Computers still have it).

With Apples HD Audio around to corner they should proved something that can actually play it too :D
Maybe it's the return of the headphone jack or a new 'HI-FI Dongle'?

I'm looking at the Air now every day and still think removing the headphone jack is just absolutely, earth-shatteringly dumb. Even if I don't think of making music with it.

My original opinion was that Apple still makes great hardware but quite backward software these days. But looking at the lack of that jack, and reading about these pro-killing stories... I mean, no matter how cruelly I twist anything in and out of the usb-c connector of our basic Samsung tablet, it just works.

I guess the only thing that keeps Apple interesting for me is that they are still the only ones to handle audio properly for music making. 🤷

Yes, but I hadn't used a hub on this ipad for a day or more. Amd this hub was bought in an apple store itself, should be legit.

  • Sometimes it is lint/dust in the charger port. Some people say blowing into the port with an areosol of compressed air, but I think this can only force fluff further into the port. I have before now rigged a vac on low suck and created a tappered nozzle using a straw to suck out any trapped fluff. Obvously dont push anything into the port. Hope you are able to get it sorted soon.

  • @Toastedghost possible, I guess.

But yeah, the new things in the last few days were a) upgrade to 14.5 - don't ask 😅 - and b) using a power bank. Who knows
