IDM doesn’t mean anything. It’s a bunch of artists at a certain point in history that were artificially lumped together under a dumb term. It’s just experimental electronic music. My advice would be to stop thinking about genres and just make music you like.

For Windowlicker type sounds look into FFT/spectral processing.

Is IDM as a name particular to the United States? I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone use the term in the uk in 30 years of raving.

Yeah I think it was mostly used in the States, the name inspired by Warp’s Artificial Intelligence series and popularized by a mailing list.

  • I swear, this is a treasure trove of knowledge and great music right here. :) It's strange how a whole variety of music is simply called IDM, just like when people used to call everything from Trance, House, Dance Pop, etc as "Techno".

In a sense, my Minimal Techno experiments could be lobbed into IDM from what I understand. Even though I don't consider those to be IDM since they lack glitchiness.

No, but seriously, that video was awesome! It was glitchy, without using glitching effects like Turnado.

  • Found this on Youtube.

    Absolutely fascinating.

  • @AudioGus the moment I saw the teacher, I knew where this was going. And it's still perfect

@Identor that video is pure awesomeness. It's by Meat Dept, if any of you dig this kind of weird stuff, they made animation for Love Death + Robots (on Netflix). I think it captures well the lovely mess that is Igorrr's music
