England, Good Luck

OK, I know we have a lot of Englanders here, so let me say a qualified* Good luck today, guys! (Also, to the Danes, you're an inspiring squad and I wish you luck as well.)

OK. I have a lot of English DNA, and I've been an Anglophile since the moment I heard Elton John's version of "Pinball Wizard." It's kind of great being an American mutt when the Euros are on, because I can reasonably root for the Dutch, the Germans, the English, the Scots and the Welsh (should the need arise). And as much as I want the land of my forebears to win, you guys are going to be so insufferable if you do. You're like the Mexico of Europe: Insanely devoted sports monoculture that fields a reliably very good team but WAY overestimates its chances in every tournament. At least it's not the World Cup. You have no idea what was like to be in the presence of Red Sox fans when they finally won a World Series. Still, good luck! :)

  • Thanks! This is definitely the best England side I've ever seen, against Ukraine they were passing the ball around and keeping possession like they were Barca. I'm not used to seeing England playing with that level of control and technique, we're usually all about hoofing it up the field and getting it in the box.

But of course England have never won the Euros, unlike Denmark who actually have. And then Italy is another proposition altogether...

  • They've a great squad and a likeable squad but not sure I could handle the win being replayed and talked about through every major tournament for the rest of my life. Also being from one of the other countries in the uk and hearing 'we' all the time is a bit annoying.

So yeah, a bit torn but i do hope it's a great match whoever wins

  • It's coming home!

  • And if they win, imagine the cognitive dissonance amongst the fans who were booing them just a couple of weeks ago...

  • I hope Denmark wins 😊🇩🇰

Why were they booing? Was this a gesture for Black Lives Matter or something?

To highlight racism and inequality. The manager has wrote a letter to fans explaining why are they doing this and has been vocal about stamping out racism in football etc

  • I was born in England, so definitely rooting for them!

This is the reason for once that I actually care, it’ll stick it to the booers if they win, it even came up in Parliament today when the leader of the opposition ribbed the government member who said he wouldn’t be watching because of the kneeling 😆

Just goes to show what happens when you let people express themselves freely ✊✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

    Dear England

  • As I’m German I was sad to be kicked out of the tournament but I must admit that the English were better. Germany against England in Wembley has quite a history and the last English victory was the final of the world cup 1966. It’s probably the best English team since decades and they deserve to win the cup. Football is coming home!!! Of course it‘s also comfortable for me to say that the cup winner kicked us out 😜 I’m for England.

This is definitely the best English team I’ve seen too. They are not reliant on David Beckham or Wayne rooney’s metatarsal’s remaining intact for an entire tournament. The strength in depth, especially up front, is insane. Sancho, rashford, foden, Grealish — and that’s the bench!

For the rest of Britain, I think this sums it up:

I’m hoping for an Italy v England final. My old man was Italian so i suppose I can’t lose :-)

It does sum up the English attitude perfectly as once again they forgot the UK has another country ;)

I’m pretty sure No Englishman made that map! I found it on Twitter. If I wasn’t lazy I’d try and find the original source… ;-)

In the meantime I’ll change UK to GB above so as not to upset the other English soccer franchise clubs 😂 (hat tip @usasoccerguy)

The highlighted areas are GB though, and not UK, so it’s more accurate to say “the rest of GB.” UK would include Northern Ireland.

If my memory serves me right, most of England (except Wessex) used to be run by the Viking Danes. Scotland and Wales were not. So in a very remote kinda way, tonight’s game could be seen as New Denmark vs OG Denmark 😂

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
    In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
    Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
    Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

    (Rupert Brooke)

    Etc. Etc.

    Down in Albion
    They're black and blue
But we don't talk about that
    Are you from 'round here?
    How do you do?
I'd like to talk about that
    Talk over
    Gin in teacups
    Leaves on the lawn
    Violence in bus stops
And the pale thin girl with eyes forlorn
    More gin in teacups
    Leaves on the lawn
    Violence in dole queues
    And the pale thin girl
    Behind the checkout
If you're looking for a cheap sort
    Set in false anticipation
I'll be waiting in the photo booth
    At the underground station
So come away, won't you come away
    We could go to...
    Deptford, Catford, Watford, Digberth, Mansfield
    Ahh, anywhere in Albion
    Anywhere in Albion
    Anywhere in Albion
    Yellowing classics
    And canons at dawn
    Coffee wallahs and pith helmets
    And an English song
    Mmm... Reebok classics
    And canons at dawn
    Terrible warlords, good Warlords
    And an English song
Oh, if you're looking for a cheap sort
    All glint with perspiration
    There's a four-mile queue
    Outside the disused power station
Come away, oh say you'll come away
    We'll go to...
    Satsworth, Senford, Weovil, Woomoyle, Newcastle
If you are looking for a cheap tart
    Don't glint with perspiration
    There's a five-mile queue
    Outside the disused power station
Now come away (away), won't you come away
    We'll go to...
    Bedtown, Oldham, Nunthorpe, Rowlam, Bristol
    Anywhere in Albion
    Anywhere in Albion
    Anywhere in Albion
    Anywhere in Albion

BRILLIANT! My anthem for the day.

    Ingerland 2 : 1 Denmark

  • What a goal that was

  • And another, good match

  • What do you think? How many will die on Covid after these event? UEFA sucks! Only money counts.

  • It’s a joke that they select certain events under the banner of test events. It’s obvious these are selected as test events for the money they generate over the need for testing. Surely they should be running all types of events at all sizes to gauge what can run safely.

Here we have stadium of 60000 together but my local venue cant have a band play with 100 people sitting at tables

  • It’s a good excuse for mid week drinking anyway 😊

  • Finally A Soccer Post! I’m not afraid to say I almost started a thread about something Soccer related a couple times. Love it. I’m a massive fan, and coach. It comes in at a close second place for me, Music being first.

  • I am rooting for the 3 lions in this one, even though I like Denmark too.
