Am I the only one who thought the penalty was fair?

You're certainly not the only one! The guy from Blackpool you post also agreed. :)

I mean, it's not Arjen Robben v. Mexico, but most of the commentators I saw thought it was a dive. But Sterling is not what you'd call a diver, and his determination made it happen. England just has to win by four against Italy for it to not have an asterisk. :)

  • The refereeing in this tournament has been very good overall but it was quite a soft pen. I’ve seen much softer ones given though.

VAR has been used sparingly and although it still sucks, hasn’t ruined games in the way they let it spoil things in the Premiership.

The penalty wasn’t a clear and obvious enough error to overrule the ref. It looks much more like a penalty when seen in real time.

Luck usually evades England in tournaments. What with metatarsals, soft sending offs, lampard’s non-goal, hand of god etc it’s nice to get the roll of the dice for pretty much the first time since a Russian linesman saw a ball cross the line back in the black and white days.

    So yeah it was lucky.

    About time. 🤣

Sorry, forgot the link. It's been a while :)

  • Can some give football a call, I'm worried, it's getting late and he's still not home ;)

  • Pretty sure it lives somewhere else 😆

  • Congratulations to Italy - they were the better team on the night. 🏆

This England team had a great tournament, but in the end they were outplayed by the Italians.

  • The online racial abuse of the England players who didn’t score their penalties is absolutely atrocious. There must be a way of adapting things in order that these people can be exposed. I see that the police are on the case. Hopefully a high media profile will keep it going to actual conviction.

The footage of fans attacking people and wrecking the place was disgusting also. The ugly side of English football always comes through at some point. The oi oi oiks raising their ugly racist heads. The opposite of what these young players represent

FWIW to me both teams were pretty balanced which was reflected in the FT/ET result. There seemed to have been stretches where one or the other team were dominating but on the whole they pretty much cancelled each other and general inability to finish made it a pretty average game if one excluded the ‘final’ hype. The pen shootout I think was anyone’s guess with slight advantage of Italy having a physically bigger goalkeeper. Having said that, well done to Italy for doing so well against the away crowd. Can’t believe the English fans had to resort to booing in an effort to get their team to win.

It was painful to watch how violent tackles are still tolerated in football. I would have run out of cards for all the dangerous slide tackles and shirt pulling if I was the referee. Especially shirt pulling. So flipping childish.

The highlight for me was having my wife on my right screaming in support of Italy and my 10yo daughter on my left supporting England. Loved it!

The actual final was played a few days back between Italy and Spain though, I think. The best game of the tournament ;)

  • Italy played scintillating football throughout the tournament and were a joy to watch. Many congratulations to them. Looking forward to them attacking next year’s World Cup. They’ll take some beating.

It seems that some older and more experienced players refused to shoot penalties. It would be very bad if true.

  • Switzerland vs France was the best game of the tournament...but hey, I'm Swiss !!

I don't think so, Southgate explicitly said that he decided on who was taking the penalties - and you could see him with a list at the end of extra time.

In 1984 Champion's League final, top star player Paulo Roberto Falcao refused to shoot the penalty, and Roma lost against Liverpool. I was 12 years old. I am sure that it's a big responsability, and history teaches us that even big champions are afraid of running risks.
Even if Southgate had a list, it doesn't mean that shooters were the ones on the list. Mourinho said that surely one player refused. It's not normal to ask a 19 years old to shoot the final penalty. It's logical.

  • I’m looking forward to pub quizzes in the far future which ask “In which year did Euro 2020 take place?”

  • Arsenal fans know why you might choose this particular 19 year old to step up - he has been our best player this last season, has played in 7 out of a possible 10 outfield positions and has been the player most likely to lead the fight in difficult situations.

Still might have been the wrong decision to pick him, and his devastation was heart-crushing, but Bukayo will get over this and continue to be the phenomenon he has been for some years now.

I really can’t understand why the players don’t just run up and hit the ball as hard as they possibly can. I used to play as a goalkeeper(albeit at a minor level) and these were the types of penalty I felt I had least chance with. Plus I can’t remember the last time I saw a hard hit penalty not go in.

    True

Because a good goalkeeper knows how and usually where players will shoot penalties. And shooting hard means low precision. It's easier for goalkeeper to get it.

I think accuracy is the main reason, and trying to get the ball into one of the top corners, which makes it near impossible to save. That’s definitely not easy if you’re hitting it as hard as you can.

  • Top corner with power is the best penalty you can take, easier said than done though from that range and under that pressure

  • Alan Shearer once said that he only hits the ball in one of the top corners, and would practice over and over just aiming for those corners. When it came to taking one he would never look at the keeper or anyone else - just the ball and the corner he was targeting. Can’t say I ever remember him missing a penalty.

  • Penalties are just a terrible way to decide a championship. Like, after 120 minutes of brilliant tactical play produced no winner? On we go to Rock-Scisscors-Paper!

This is why the National Hockey League, after adopting the "shootout" in regular season play (to avoid draws), abandoned them in the Stanley Cup. Playoff hockey is always sudden-death overtime — and however long it takes, that's how long it takes. When one team scores, it's over. And it has produced absolutely the most reliably exciting moments in sport. There's no playing for a draw; no bunkering, no 10 men behind the ball. It's incredibly intense and draining. The victory, though, is never hollow-feeling.

Hockey, of course, has free substitutions. Every shift is all-out and exhausting, and rarely lasts more than 45 seconds. Not sure how it would work with soccer players, who have run in excess of 6 and 7 miles in a game.

Or they could always do the ridiculous version of the American MLS shootout in the league's early stages. Ball placed 30 meters away from goal, and the shooter dribbles in as close as he wants — but the keeper gets to run out and meet him! It's absurd and entertaining. And this clip is worth watching if only for the insane and voluminous uniforms.
