  • I’m getting this weird glitching inside Cubasis3. Anybody else getting this? It doesn’t happen in NanoStudio2.

  • thanks, everyone!

    Thanks for the update!

Just a small and egoistical request for any future updates: Would it be possible to include an “instant pattern switch” for the snapshots, just like Octachron does?

I suppose this would be a sensible setting, I will add it.

looks like somethings might be sending MIDI into polybeat, triggering the sequence operations. can you check this?

Hmm, you might be right. I just started a new project and wasn’t able to reproduce that problem. I’ll let you know if it returns but it all seems fine now. Thanks!

@cp3 just bought it and tried to use it with GR-16 and gave up, my comments:

1.- (USSABILITY) the bottom part should be collapsible, when using it as a window on AUM it takes over the notes and uses all the space, so the app it's only useful almos full screen for me (iPad 10.2")

2.- (USSABILITY) The custom mapping is cumbersome as it ask me a note number and I ussually work with note names lie D#4

3.- (USSABILITY) If I change the custom midi mapping while the pattern is running, it doesn't reflect the change, so I can´t solve N°2 by trial an error unless I change the number, close the custom midi mapping, and play the pattern again.

4.- (BUG) When changing the pattern while running, it sends the note on for the new value but the note off for the old value:

5.- (REQUEST) In GR-16 "polymode" I need to send one note to a different midi channel per drum part, so for the kick is C3 in channel 9, for snare 1 is C3 in channel 10 and so on, from channels 9 to 16, currently all lanes send info in the same midi channel.

6.- (BUG) when first trying the app and changing mappings there where phantom notes (I think its related to bug N°4) that stayed there even if I cleared all the notes of the pattern or if I selected "clear pattern" from the menu.

7.- It seem you can't change the track names on midi mappings?

I hope this issues get fixed, I guess once I have a mapping done this issues won't be present anymore and I'll be able to use it.

    Cheers!

  • We also really need an undo, I loaded a preset by mistake and lost my pattern.

And we also need midi mapping, at the very least for pattern change.

I'm sorry, it was a really frustrating first use :(

I can confirm bugs Number 4 and 6. It seems like they have a common cause.

thanks for the feedback, I'm sorry you had a bad experience. I will try to address the issues you encountered. to your points:
    1. indeed, I'm planning to make modulation view collapsable.
    2. polybeat was intended as a drum sequencer, and MIDI drum mappings normally work with note numbers, so I figured this would be the most useful.
    3. you're right, I suppose the mapping should change while you're editing it - will fix this.
    4. I can't reproduce this issue when switching patterns, however I do notice phantom notes when changing the custom mapping while the pattern is playing. Could this the underlying issue? If not, could give me the exact steps to reproduce the issue as it occurs when changing patterns?
    5. for now polybeat can only send data on a single channel, as changing this would add a lot of complexity.
    6. you're right, this will be fixed in the next release.
    7. for custom mappings you can set a name when adding a new track. track names for preset mappings can't be changed.

Yeah sorry, it happens when changing the mapping, having already mapped GR-16 all this issues are irrelevant except for the incapability to change the tracks name so I named them 01, 02, 03 and so on.

For transmitting in different channels I guess I will have to learn streambyter.

    Thanks for the detailed answer!

  • new update (1.1.2) out!

    • fixed bug where notes would hang after modifying custom presets
    • apply custom preset changes immediately
    • added option to switch snapshots instantly, instead of waiting for the current bar finish
    • save currently selected snapshot in preset and document state
    • added additional MIDI mapping presets

    Great, thanks for the update!

I found another "bug" if I make a track shorter and immediately go back to the default length I lose the steps information, it happens to me when resizing tracks

    Cheers!

Thanks a lot for your work and for the update! I just tried it and custom mappings now work on my end!

One thing though, regarding the presets: the "Korg Volca Drum" one is not working for me, since v1.0. I think it's mislabeled as "Drum" instead of "Beats", as the preset has 10 tracks like the Beats, instead of 6 that the Drum has.

On the Volca Drum, the tracks normally respond starting from C4(60). For reference, I just tried this custom mapping and it works with the Volca Drum (btw is there a way to change the tracks' names?):

Great little video that. Shows a varied spectrum of rhythmic acrobatics that's easily possible with polybeat. It's been great watching it subtly evolve since the initial 'soft launch' release.

  • Hi @cp3
I’m still loving Polybeat for its many possibilities and ease of use, and I also just purchased Cykle, so I have killer duo for rhythm/melody/bass lines now.

However, one small “bug” of a kind. When I use Polybeat in Cubasis 3, it tends to omit playing some of the notes in the grid. There is no apparent system or consistency to it, but it will miss a kick drum or a big hat now and again.

I don’t have issues with Polybeat in AUM, so it seems to be a problem between Polybeat and Cubasis.

Just thought I’d mention if anyone else experiences the same. It is a shame, because I tend not to use the app as much as I would like to.

Oh the frustration =/ I wish it was perfect ;) but luckily there’s always a workaround.
There are Mozaic script available for that use case.

Update: I played around with it again today without any of these issues. Only experienced one bug: when I tried to set up CC in the app, the playback suddenly began omitting every second beat. Again, I only experience these bugs when working with Polybeat in Cubasis.

On another note, is it possible to create a parameter called “wait”? If I program a fill at the end of a bar, I would often want it to play every 4th round, and that’s not possible with Polybeat.

Essentially, I would like the opposite of the “skip” parameter, where it plays e.g. a snare fill the first time around and then waits x amount of rounds before playing it again. With “wait” it would not play the fill before x amount of rounds have been played.

Thanks again for a great and creative app!

thanks for reporting, I'll look into it - I haven't tested extensively with Cubasis, only with AUM. let me know if you find a way to reliably reproduce the issues you are experiencing.

not sure about the 'wait' parameter, I see how it could be useful but I feel it's too close in functionality to skip. the way I envisioned users programming fills is by putting them in a separate snapshot (A, B, etc.), then you could sequence the snapshot switching by sending MIDI into polybeat from a sequencer track in Cubasis.

  • @cp3 said

Is that how you currently sequence snapshots (as in A B etc.). Sorry, only just got it and not even look at/for a manual.

Sounds quite a lot like this bug that I reported:

    https://forums.steinberg.net/t/3rd-party-issue-notes-dropped-when-generated-by-midi-plugins/720920/25

I had hopes that 3.3.3 was going to fix it but the problem still appears to be there.

  • I can’t seem to get polybeat to respond to mutes via incoming midi notes? Clearing, randomising a track etc works but not mutes for some reason? Is it bug or am I being dense? 🥸

Also, the fact that you have to select a track via a midi note and then mute it with another, it doesn’t seem possible to mute multiple tracks at once. Anyone have any work around? I’d really love to use polybeat as my main trigger sequencer for hardware but the way the midi control works might, seems like it just might not fit the bill

I'll look into the mute bug.

the track selection logic is on purpose, if I were to give every track dedicated MIDI pitches for every option, there wouldn't be enough pitches! maybe I can figure something out using different MIDI channels.

    Thanks mate!

I didn’t actually realise how many channels polybeat had 🤯 so yeah I get what you mean. Would it be possible to use CCs instead of note data? Tbh I’ve got a pretty easy workaround in Drambo for the time being anyway.
Such a killer app all in all. This and cykle are really great, had been meaning to try them for ages and I regret taking so long!

  • Hey @cp3 bought polybeat a few weeks back and love it. Congratulations On a great release. I was Hoping there were a few more options in the custom midi mapping. I would love to be able to delete or at least rename the 8 values that automation show up when you start a custom map. I couldn’t find a way to delete any of them even it was a new one I created. I made a kit of 808’s each in a different pitch and I wanted to reflect that in a custom map by naming each lane the pitch of the sample. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the custom map to rename the 8 the are preloaded.

It would also be cool if there was a way to see the actual midi mappings of the built in app presets, that way it also acts as a reference. That way You could easily see the midi mapping of each app that has a preset.

    Thanks, cheers.

Just slide them to the left to delete them

  • I didn't think I needed this since I have so many drum apps... but I changed my mind. It's just faster than most other apps to create something unique. It concert with FAC Drumkit, Klevgrand Slammer and Drumjam it makes some really unique beats.

But it so we get a lot more features overtime. You won't regret it.

Agreed, especially with fac dk, not every sequencer has all 16 lanes either.
