The worst thing about YouTube has always been the criticism, which is abstracted and disconnected from the person doing the criticising. If I could know who is pressing dislike on my videos I at least have a chance to go after them and administer retribution, which at least is possible with comments. I would far prefer no means of pressing like or dislike – it isn’t important and only serves to cause me to hate my viewers, and hate not being able to punish them.

You have just won this thread, sir.

Oh trust me, I'd love to know who the people - most likely from this forum - gave me a bunch of thumbs downs on a perfectly good video just because i had the audacity to experiment with posting it as a link rather than an embedded video. I definitely give them a thumbs down, whoever they are 🤪

I did identify one arsehole who criticised in a very offensive way, and reported all their own videos on their account. After a few weeks I ran out of energy trying to get their own account deleted, but now you’ve reminded me I’m going to go after them again until they’re gone. I think 2022 needs to be that kind of year for me – remove the enemy.

I’m starting to hate twitter, youtube etc because it’s essentially too democratic. I don’t like that. I preferred it when I was teaching and lecturing, with the defined and accepted power differential between me, the lecturer, and them, the students. If I post a video, I simply don’t expect or tolerate peers deciding to critique it on the spot. That’s unacceptable given the work I put into it and the lack of work they put into criticism.

You could just post them as unlisted, embed them in your own html on your own site and spread it word of mouth.

  • I haven't read the thread, but here's my unsolicited evaluation: that decision obviously makes the whole feature completely useless (as the only relevant figure for judging the value of a video was the ratio between "Likes" and "Dislikes"), so they can now go and remove the "Like" button as well :)

I thought you were joking... now I’m not sure :D
