  • The ilok grumbling is utterly bizarre imo. I’ve used it for many years and it’s been flawless. It seems there’s a few issues that individuals have had but they seem rare.

    YMMV of course.

  • Yeah I also mostly was lucky with iLok so far. The reselling fee sucks but better having a reselling fee than not being able to resell at all (like App Store purchases or companies like Spitfire Audio etc).
I completely avoided iLok when they had their usb drive. That really seemed ridiculous to me.

  • Regarding iLok: I can understand and appreciate how a software system that can potentially make your computer unbootable, and having a single point of failure for a variety of plugins not being an attractive proposition.

I haven't had any problems, but I've definitely read some horror stories. From what I gather, the problems are typically caused by installing an old version of the iLok License Manager which is integrated into plugin installers.

Many of the complaints I've seen have been about inMusic Brands (Akai, AIR Music Technology, SONiVOX, etc.). There was a time recently where Plugin Boutique stopped selling some of their plugins.

  • Every forum that has an interest in desktop plugins should have a dedicated iLok thread and that should be the ONLY place anyone can post about iLok. A bit like Off Topic but just for iLok.

ILok discussions are relentless and never ever get resolved. Banish them before it’s too late lol.

  • I agree. Such conversations should be rendered unable to cause any trouble.

    No, wait. That’s Loki

Yes, it's true... if you've wanted Imaginando's FRMS (hybrid granular synth) forever but couldn't afford it, now's the time to buy. Both the iOS and desktop versions are 80% off today only. And it should probably be noted that the big discount doesn't apply if you want to buy one of their bundles. Only applies to the single app purchase, plus the extra patches they sell are also deeply marked down.

New granular synth from Dawesome / Tracktion...Intro pricing plus extra 40% if you already own Abyss...

Got the demo and it's very interesting - possibly one of the best implementations of a granular synth available.

Very slightly over the top review / demo

Novum can be purchased for $90.22 using the code GROUP in JRRShop.

Seeing the things that people are achieving with this, I'm really impressed.

Look at this post by gondi in the KVR Forum, a sample of a single C key played on a piano with lush reverb, and then imported to Novum. No external processing.

    https://kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=582777&start=135

It's impressive how with single sounds, it's possible to create full orchestral arrangements with this thing.

I will wait until July to see if Audio Modelling does a summer sale, now SWAM Clarinets on desktop is my maximum priority to get.

But if not, I'm seriously tempted by Novum as my big purchase of July.

JRR are great and fully trustworthy. Personal service even if you have any issues (I once had a problem downloading a Toontrack thing and was helped through it by Mr JRR himself. Very professional and friendly).

I might be getting my first new laptop in like 11 years. Its amazing how long I was able to go almost exclusively using an iPad.
Anyway, now that I have returned to music making after an extended hiatus - but did so via iOS music it seems I have a bit of learning curve in terms of not only integrating the iPad and laptop but also duplicating the functions of certain apps that I probably wont want to do without on either platform now.

Right away, can anyone tell me if there are any midi plugins that duplicate the polyrhythmic functionality of Octachron and Polybeat for drums without spending $200 +/- for something like Geist (preferably pre-mapped for popular drum plugins)? I spent some time looking last night. Surprisingly elusive.
Also, the same functionality of StepPolyArp and Cykle is something I will be seeking as well.

Something similar to generative-type apps such as Polyphase and Xynthesizr would be nice too…

  • Incredibly, Waves has a new sale!

...Or, in what is perhaps a more precise wording, they are again recruiting unsuspecting users for their clandestine plugin subscription programme. 🤷

That’s probably a fanboy answer but I would just buy Bitwig. They have a summer sale right now. I think Bitwig is a good DAW of choice for an iOS musician because if it’s modular nature. If you love AUM and Drambo then you will love Bitwig. You can build your own sequencers with Bitwig’s Polygrid.

Of course you might miss the UI and the workflow of these apps but you can just continue to use them. Just connect your iPad and use them drive synths on the laptop. Ableton Link keeps everything in sync. I‘m doing this too, because it’s so much nicer to program step sequencers with a touch UI.

Oh damn… I’m one of them 😞 During a previous sale I bought two plugins. Waves Tune Realtime and CR8. Does it mean I have to pay again to continue using them after one year?

  • edited June 2022

Waves is the latest plugin developer I'm going to buy something. Indeed, I won't install their plugins under any circumstances, even if they were all free, or they pay me.

I only tried Trans-X, which I obtained for free with some promotion that I don't remember.

Waves installed a running process running in the background of my Mac, even if you don't open your DAW or open one of their plugins in your current session. This Waves Server thing is ALWAYS running in the background.

I tried to use Waves Central to uninstall the plugin. The server was still running in the background, even after rebooting my Mac and having uninstalled the plugin.

I uninstalled the Waves Central using their own uninstaller.

After having uninstalled everything single piece of Waves using their uninstaller, do you know what?

The Waves server was still running as a background process after rebooting my Mac. So I uninstalled this manually.

And months after that, hidden folders with Waves content, tens of them, keep appearing in the more remote locations of my hard drive, looking for other things.

Never again, Waves. You lost a customer forever with your "free promotion".

And lesson learned. Now, I will never install anything in my main hard drive, without having tested this on an external partition in an USB-C drive with Big Sur installed, that I use only for demoing things.

No. U only need to WUP when u actually need to update. For instance those with m1 computers and old waves licenses would want the WUP to have their collection become M1 native

Ah! Thanks. Never used Ableton Link. Sounds easy enough.
I’ve onky been involved with iOS music for a few months now - still on a fairly wild learning curve. Lots of apps :)
I havent learned Drambo yet but definitely plan to watch SFM’s tutorials and jump in.
I like AUM a lot, but to be honest, when starting out I would have preferred a more familiar DAW environment that did everything I wanted - well. While I have semi-resisted the modularity of AUM, it has gradually presented itself as an arguably better and more flexible solution, perhaps, in the long run.
I’ve looked at BW of course, but always assumed I would just upgrade my Ableton license for something like half the price of a new DAW if I got back into desktop. The main reason being that the initial buy-in for BW seems a little steep for me at this time. But then again I have to be honest with myself about whether caving and buying it is an inevitability anyway and save myself some time working against it’s allure.

  • Did we miss an Ableton sale?

If that is related to my comment about “half price” I meant upgrade vs initial buy-in of Bitwig.
I could be wrong but last time I looked into it I think my upgrade price from 9 would be more like $2-300 vs almost $500 for a fresh BW license.
I really should double check that. Maybe I’ll go do that now..

Update: Just did. Its $289 vs $299 because of the special.
    Tempting af.
