ScaleBud 2 - AUv3 MIDI Keyboard with +100 Scales [Out!]
Hi all, I'm super excited about announcing the ScaleBud 2 - AUv3 MIDI Keyboard. While maintaining the core functionality of ScaleBud, ScaleBud 2 adds a lot of new features.
- It has more than 100 scales (x2.5 times more than ScaleBud 1)
- You will be able to create your custom scales and share them between other Bud apps (MelodyBud, SnakeBud, ChordBud etc)
- Unlimited keyboard rows (ScaleBud 1 has only one row of keyboard)
- You can assign different key/scale/octave to each keyboard row and switch between scale and chord modes.
- Each keyboard row has their own MIDI in/out setting - which is huge because you can split your MIDI keyboard and control multiple ScaleBud keyboard rows, for example;
- You can split and use C3-B4 notes to play A-major chords, C5-B6 to play A-phrygian notes, use C6-B7 to play E-mixolydian notes and transpose them -2 octaves so they will be sound in the same level with the A-phrygian part.
- ScaleBud 2 also has the new "Round the off-scale notes" feature which rounds an off-scale note to the nearest key in the scale, so you can use all of your MIDI Keyboard's keys and play in-scale. That feature works on both Scale and Chord modes.
- Create unlimited patterns so switch between the different keyboard configs easily in a single project.
- Save the state as AU presets.
- You can edit the active keyboard's key/scale/mode/octave/velocity settings and the selected pattern with AU parameters.

This looks fantastic. Would happily test it out (vasily.milovidov at gmail.com)
That looks great! Happy to help - tatqoo at gmail
I'm wondering if 'patterns' is the right term for the saved states for keyboards? The way my brain works it makes me think that you can 'arrange' the notes / chords in a sequence which isn't the way Scalebud works (or am I missing something?) I'm not sure what would be a better word - maybe 'layouts'?
I got excited that maybe that was referring to implemented ChordBud functions, but alas. I bet it's to keep verbiage consistent across his apps where Pattern means "page" in the 'Bud world.
Yes, I see that but it could raise expectations with potential customers...
@cem_olcay - what do you think?
Oh yeah, a “pattern” means like a page or a tab in ScaleBud. Is that confusing?
BTW I sent quite a few beta invitations, please post your thoughts/feedbacks on the app
This sounds awesome.
Feels like a solid upgrade from the original, the only thing that confused me for a moment was that there’s two places to change the key, but I’m guessing that the simpler one by the keyboard is for convenience when you have the window smaller…
@cem_olcay - I can see that you're using "pattern" to identify a page in ScaleBud but in the other buds that feature patterns they are like sequencers where you create a custom sequence or pattern of events whereas ScaleBud is storing 'preset' keyboard layouts. Don't know if it's just me that thinks this so feel free to ignore me...😉
Otherwise I've not found any problems so far - looking forward to the official release...
Hi @cem_olcay, Scalebud 2 is looking fantastic, owning all your other’s still has me scratching my head why just SnakeBud and MelodyBud remain completely motionless when used as MidiFX in Logic Pro, on the Mac. All of your other plugins work great, stand-alone SnakBud and MelodyBud both have the play button and operate fine, I may have missed something, if you have any suggestions that would be great, thanks.
I don’t know how iOS MIDI AU apps behave in Logic Pro, it could be a Logic issue as well.
I will release another build soon and release the app on the next week.
Can’t wait @cem_olcay did you see @Jamie_Mallender video using all your apps, pretty cool.
Any eta on this beta?
Thank you for watching! Those kind of app jams tend to go one way or the other. 😂 I wasn’t embarrassed by the end product this time. 🤓
Hi Cem, if you need any more beta-testers, here’s my email: Fampriem at gmail.com 😎👌👍
Hey all, the app is in the App Store!

Actually yes, it is possible! Create 3 rows of keyboard with the same key&scale. Assign their MIDI channels to the channels you want to control, then play a note on each one of them at the same time. You'll play a chord but each note of the chord will be sent a different MIDI channel.
Somehow it doesn’t register any notes played coming from my Arturia Keystep. I’ve also checked with Launchpad X and it works here but when I try recording the notes into Atom 2 (step record) I get double notes recorded every step plus with Round Off feature enabled it records the first note out of scale and the second one seems to be properly corrected.
It works perfectly fine with Korg’s Nanokey Studio via bluetooth though.
It’s out. Hooray.
Good to know about Korg nanokey studio Bluetooth
I’ve been spending sooo much dough on apps now I gotta buy another one. Lol.
@cem_olcay really cool you made some of the code open source too. Cheers mate.
Totally missed the beta invite. My fault. I’m trying it out today.
So unstable when guest inside Cubasis3. Crashes too often.
@cem_olcay Where can I send crash reports to? I can’t use the app like this, this is completely useless to me in this state 😢
EDIT: okay after a few minutes of use I’m getting less crashes. So it might not be so bad after all. I want to still send crash reports, though. Also I just had a ScaleBud2 instance UI just disappear on me but there’s no crash report for it..
Is that only happens on Cubasis or is it happening on AUM or other hosts too?
Hi,
I haven’t tested other hosts, only C3.
