@Blue_Mangoo is there any chance you could make the user agent string of Web Audio Player customizable? Some sites don't play well with the current one for mobile Safari. Maybe even just allowing one to change between desktop and mobile Safari would be enough
Edit: also, could the URL be saved as part of the plugin state?
Hmmm, I was under the impression that you could not record this one. Records ok?
Yep, it does. In YouTube, there's no video playback, but the audio works just fine.
There's a lot of Shortcuts for the app that rip audio as well. I've been using the same one for ages if I want more than a song section.
Hm... I thought we did that already. I will look into it.
Bah, never mind, I just checked and state save worked, I must have done something wrong when I checked last week. Thanks!
This is what I’ve always used, I was gonna buy tube Au awhile back but blue Mangoo added YT to its list of working for Web Audio Player so I got that instead.
That’s a shame. I used it quite a lot for teaching guitar and bass covers in AUM. Really useful app.
Just in case this might help: there is a utility on Linux called “youtube-dl”. I believe the source code is available on github. In my experience, they update often and can download youtube videos.
Tube au still works. I just updated from I guess xmas. 60 updates. Also bought the devs other web record app ( based on this thread saying tube AU is gone ) but also realised I think I can use an iconnect audio4c. So can just send ipad to ipad. Thats if both apps disappear. Its easier at the mo. To just use the app rather than making decision of switching the sender and reciever ipad.
It sort of works. lol
Still works for me… I’ve been sampling audio into Koala
I know this thread is several months old but I’m wondering if there is any more info about Tube AU? It’s still available for purchase on the app store now so… Is it still working or has it stopped? Given how transparent and open the dev was about the issues Tube AU faces, I can’t them continuing to sell it if it doesn’t work. So, was a workaround found?
Did you know there was another developer that took on the name and keeps updating it?

What do you need TubeAU for? If its just for piping the audio then Web Audio Player can do the same thing, it just won't play the video.
The original TubeAU has been abandoned, but stranglely from the same dev (Blue Mangoo) Web Audio Player is still working
@dasgoods…thank you SO much for responding. That really helped me. I had no idea that another dev had taken over the name and kept it up. I had just seen the app name in older Audiobus threads recommending it and then found this one so I was surprised to find Tube AU still available. So is it the same app (as in was the original code transferred to someone else) but they’ve kept it updated now? That’s the app I had seen in the App Store and then again listed on Blue_Mangoo’s website as I was looking for an app to help get audio from YT.
I’ll try Web Audio Player first and see if that will do what I’m hoping. Does anyone happen to know if WAP will work with “live” YT videos? Since it doesn’t download it like other sites but plays it, I’m hopeful that it will.
Tube Audio is a different developer and different software from Tube AU. It is my understanding that it is new software from a different dev that does the same thing.
I’ve never tried it on a live video I can test it for you…
@lifereinspired I just tried like six different live videos and the maximum I could get it to play was five seconds. I believe the app needs to cache the audio, so a live video might not work because it has nothing to Cache, then replay. If that makes sense…
@Poppadocrock, how kind of you to try! And how disappointing, too!!! That’s the main reason I wanted to purchase the app. There are loads of ways to “download” separate audio on desktop but it doesn’t work with any live videos that I’ve found. Grrrr. Well, at least I know. I truly can’t thank you enough to giving a go on my behalf! I’ve actually been trying to purchase the app for the last 30 min but can’t. Some new iOS 16 family sharing issue where they want verification of the payment method. Only problem is, they aren’t sending the verification code. I’m going crazy.
I guess I’ll look at screen recording or try to figure out some way of analog line in. Thanks again!
Wow, that’s so confusing. I’m surprised it’s OK with the App Store for a second dev to do that. The reason I say this is because the App Store is showing Tube AU as being 17+ years old as an app. If it’s totally different code with the same name and different dev, that’s more than a little confusing for purchasers. I’m not upset or anything, just perplexed.
The names are similar but not exactly the same. That is quite common in the App Store. One was called “Tube AU” the other is “Tube Audio Unit”.
Sure thing, happy to help. After you mentioned the live video I was curious myself since I’ve never tried that before.
I recently had an issue adding an updated credit card, with the same number new expiration date. I tried a bunch of stuff but ultimately downloaded the apple support app, and used that. I’ve used the support app approximately 4 times over the years and every time it was quick, convenient and they fixed the issue. Turns out I had the family sharing turned on and didn’t even know I did. Plus I had to add a second payment method remove the first one, the re-add the updated card. I’d recommend trying the Apple Support app.
Also screen recording isn’t too bad, then you can use an app, there are many, I like MP3 Converter, it goes free every couple months, to convert the audio from the video to mp3, or whatever format you like.
@Poppadocrock, thanks so much! I’ll definitely reach out to Apple Support and try to get this fixed.
So, quick question RE: screen recording. It’s only going to record from the audio that gets played, right? So, if it’s using the iPad speakers, even thought the audio recording is fairly high quality, it’s still recording what’s being played via the iPad speakers, in this case (obviously, one could use a BT speaker or something else). Am I missing something or is this how it works?
@Blue_Mangoo this reminds me: is there any chance of providing an option for customizing the User-Agent string used by Web Audio Player?
Screen recording doesn't record from the speaker output. It is a digital recording internally, before the output.
Thanks @wim in stereo too.
@lifereinspired Screen recording is not my first option, but if I have to use it, and extract/convert the audio, it usually turns out pretty decent. Maybe pop it in twisted wave or audioshare for some basic trimming, normalization, etc…
I’m curious what do you mean by this?
@wim, I feel like a total idiot but is there a tutorial that explains how to do this? The only ones I’ve ever seen require turning on the mic and have the video play via the speakers and then the internal mic records it. It’s always been kinda kludgy and clearly isn’t the right way. I’ve searched for a tutorial that doesn’t use the internal mic but haven’t found it. I’m sure I’m just missing something. Any links that could help? Thanks SO much for letting me know! I clearly don’t have screen recording figured out at all!
EDIT: Is there a screen recording app that people are using and not the built in functionality? That’s what I’ve been trying to use…
EDIT #2: OK, now I REALLY feel like a complete idiot. I’d read all those tutorials showing how to record with sound (and they say turn on mic and play it via the speakers). I didn’t realize that all you have to do is screen record without the mic enabled and it records internally. Damn. It’s almost too easy. It’s not perfect quality, but it works for my purpose.
Thanks everyone!
The user-agent is how browsers identify themselves to websites, which can use it to customize the experience (for instance, desktop vs mobile version). Some websites I've tried block Web Audio Player based on its user-agent.
