Such a shame Beatmaker 3 is likely a very dead app soon…

That's fine but for $30 or whatever, I expected some sounds built-in

Not comparing with gadget or other apps with loads of other sounds. There is 1-3 sound packs that are actually free.
They did that as an awesome move because some apps have huge footprint regarding storage from the get go.
(Those apps with 1-2 GB without even downloading iAPs)

And Beatmaker 2 was like that. The base app would always have 700-800 MB, even if you never liked or used the default sounds.

And third, if you want ease of use, start using the the built in browser and tagging system, you can easily tag and save fx chains, plugins, routings and etc.

Oof... that reminds me I gotta do some cleanup some time soon. Have loads of packs converted from BM1 to BM2, and these plus loads of BM2 stuff sent to BM3. (I'm using 6 GB of my device. Beathawk is second with 4GB and finally Garageband and Gadget on the 1-2GB spectrum with no projects saved atm)

And regarding Tags, gotta admit i'm a total noob and never used it

Gadget and BeatMaker aren’t really similar apps , using included sounds as a basis of comparison doesn’t seem relevant. If what Gadget does suits one needs better than BeatMaker…BeatMaker probably wouldn’t make someone happy no matter how many sounds it came with.

Gadget does certain things well … but it (and really no other app on iOS) does not do what BM3 does well. If one isn’t interested in BM3’s sampling workflow (which is peerless), BM3 probably isn’t going to be an app one loves.

People annoyed by the change of the development pace probably don’t realize how little profit most of these apps make. As developer’s get older and have obligations in life, it gets harder to pour time into development since that time might not put more bread on your table. This is particularly true of big ambitious apps.

    I still use BM3.

I actually think part of the problem is that it was ahead of it’s time and too ambitious. With the newer powerful hardware you can really push the capabilities.

My only real peeve with it is the same overlapping midi notes issue that has been there from day one. You can finger drum some very realistic fills but can’t record them properly. 🙁

    Yep. This one is maddening.

I think even with all the missing convince features that would make making music way easier, bm3 Is still the best and most inspiring DAW for me. It does things for me that no daw (on iOS or desktop) does and if you know your workarounds you can pretty do anything you need (at least for me) It’s also super stable since the last update for me.

Would be super nice if there would be a update with new features, as the potential on this thing is insane in my opinion.

My biggest problem always was a good vocal app. And now that AEM comes up with the vocal tune studio I don’t see anything missing for me to make great and professional tunes (even though it takes a little more work on some parts as on desktop).

Isn't that related to disabling the quantize of the note-ends? (ie. if quantize note end is enabled it's impossible to record multiple fast notes within one 'grid slot' even with quantize disabled).

Then again I program most of the stuff or play with double-time metronome so I never bump into these kind of issues.

I believe in the next update when I see it. "Stay tuned..." is an overused PR phrase used to give people hope without any promise on delivery...

Same here. Although I had to share to keep the faith strong
Because we know how long we've been waiting for universal BM3 and NS2 (+audiotrack)

Yeah, I hope for the best as well since BM3 is still unbeaten in many areas after all these years.

They may be some chatter over at the BM3 discord or something...
(DIscord is one 'social media platform' I will never enter. It's a bigger time-stealer than IRC was back in the days).

This is when all quantize is off. Luckily with things like Drambo and MIDI tape recorder you can avoid the issue and take advantage of the powerful pads section.

  • Can someone point me to a good video or someone using beatmaker well? I tried it again and the workflow just seems convoluted. Also, I ran into bugs immediately as I couldn't delete samples or load new ones in.

I'd like to see someone succeed at using it. Would help me find a good starting point to give it another shot as I'm not one to discard music tools entirely.

  • For me, BM3’s ability to do real-time keyboard playable pitch-shifting is so cool and nothing else does it on iOS that I can think of.

Koala Sampler does that, unless you mean legato-style pitch shifting in the middle of the sample.

Koala doesn’t do the same pitch-shifting when playing notes…it changes the speed. Very different.

Koala sort of does if you set the stretch algorithm to Retro (which works in real time with the keyboard) but you do have to define a stretch length of course, but once defined all samples will have that same duration on the keyboard.

Can’t remember, doesn’t Sampleverse in Zenbeats have time stretched pitch shifting?

  • I will just add this. I was one of the first BM adopters, when it was only available on iPod Touch! I guess it must’ve been 2009 or so. Anyway, this app has been the first to do what it does, and even now there is no app which does what BM does. Now BM3 is an amazing sampler sequencer. I was one of beta testers and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I have to say I didn’t know Mathieu has left the building, I guess I was a bit busy last three years and wasn’t paying attention what’s happening with Intua. I think the app is as good as it is right now and whoever is working on it should only make sure it survives iOS updates. Anything more significant they should do some in-app purchases so they get some money out of it. It was never an expensive app to start with and it isn’t expensive now what for what it does. I only reacted to this thread because I thought it really IS dead, but fingers crossed, it will survive.

Nope , currently only on audio clips

EDIT; To the extent Koala does it, it isn’t up to BM3’s level when pitch is shifted while doing time-stretching.

I'd be more than happy to stump up for a major update, just like others have said I've really enjoyed using it and in many respects it's still way out in front of other apps in terms of audio quality and utility.. Ive definitely had some stability issues but it's been with auv3 plugins that already have less than stellar reputations for stability themselves..

  • I agree. Let’s hope they continue with it.

This can often be true. However, this developer doesn't seem to be actively building hype and then disappearing. Hence this thread. Why now? Could it be that there actually is a decent update around the corner?

    I hope there is! :sunglasses:

  • Well I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed, after an extended break exploring other avenues I fired up beatmaker for a little couch sesh tonight and it was like coming home, had a nice beat going in no time and I really had forgotten how much I enjoy the process.. I'm glad this thread happened.

Whenever we say we don't need anything else, you recognize the power of pairing stuff up

    Drambo + Megalit? BM3 + Drambo? Drambo + GR-16?
    So many options
