  • Can it be used as an FX unit?

I just tried: no. I would pay again for this functionality.

  • I’m a little embarrassed at how this is totally up my alley. But it’s cheaper than a Boards of Canada sound pack for Korg Module, and has ten times as many presets anyway.

Alas, no, but there are lots of apps that do offer the warble/degradation tricks. But if you want the sound of a vhs tape loading and ejecting, this is the only one.

  • Bought!

    Wow, this sounds pretty amazing!

Update: It's now also a Giveaway video, if anyone interested.

    It sounds fantastic, but....

Seems most of the samples were recorded up to C4. Play any higher and sometimes you get an octave down, sometimes the timbre of the sound is different.

edit went back to it this afternoon, most of the patches are playable between D2 and C4, move outside this area and the results are occasionally jarring.

Edit 2 - this is deliberate. Got in touch with Audiokit to check, they say it adds to it's charm. I'm inclined to agree now I've played with it a bit more.

At 3.99 its a bargain, some of the sounds are pretty epic.

  • How do you get the free OP-1 pack?

  • I'm in love...

  • I have two AUV3 running on different channels but changing a preset on one sets then both to the same preset! Is this a bug?

  • @Michael_R_Grant Just open the standalone, and the dialogue box should pop up.

@NimboStratus Yes, I see it too.

It only seems to be a display issue though, it doesn't affect the sound for me

I do already use CHOW, which is a great app. On desktop I use the 'VHS Degradation Suite' for Reaktor. And it's that wider-band noise, drop-out behaviour that I thought would be part of this app, from the FX section. However, having watched a few demos, I can see that that isn't the case.

I don't! Sadly I'm very much a modular noob... learning slowly, but very slowly. Could you give me a poke (no 80s BASIC pun intended) in the right direction?

I'll start sharing Instrument Racks for Drambo once the 1.5 update is out in the wild...

But think of it like this, the SID-Chip is very basic and most of the 'magic' happens when you tweak it.

The 'parameter update interval' on the C64 was controlled by the screen-refresh rate (50Hz on PAL machines) which equals parameter updates every 20ms, that's not set in stone but a good 'starting point'.

So a very basic 'chip-synth' consists of an Oscillator and an Amp Envelope.
Once you've got that up and running then the 'dissection' of the sounds begins, ie. what is changed and how often?

Ie. first question is what 'kind' of chip-sound is one looking for?

Does it have pulse-width modulation, does it have portamento, does it have delayed vibrato, is the pitch being altered in other ways or the basic wave-form changing over time?

The best app for now to experiment with this is by far Square Synth 2.

    Cheers!

Square Synth is absolutely fantastic. Love the sequencer.

Didn’t know about this one. Looks great!.
I have PAPU which is pretty nice. How does it compare?

PAPU has almost no 'control' apart from the basic oscillators and a simple sweep. SquareSynth allows a bit more control :sunglasses:

Ie. you can add 'sequencer lanes' to control pitch, filter, waveform selection, pulse-width which is a very BIG part of the whole chip-sound experience...

Very nice pads and warm basses from first play. It’s really quiet so throw some gain at it. Cool rompler! Deserves its own launch thread or title updated with the synth name at least, I reckon.

What’s you thought on the Heat feature? Have you tried gain with it?

Thanks for pointing Heat out. Sounds like decent saturation and yes, ups the DBs a little. The FX section is pretty fun. I think it needs an EQ as the FX lean towards a darker sound which you don’t necessarily always want.

I want this darker sound. The 80s slasher movie sound like someone else said and this comment convinced me. Buying it right now. Thank you guys 😌

    “The Next Thing.” 😂
    I heard stories about Beta-Max.
Apparently it sounded better than cassette tapes.

The stories are not “stories” Betamax was a much better stystem but it all depends on how, where and who you can infleunce. They cornered the market through publicity.
My father had one of the first reel to reel tape recorders before they had truly established wether they should run clockwise or anticlockwise. When they had made that decision his ran the “wrong” way round.

Honestly, that’s what I love about iOS music apps. Lot‘s of small but creative synths. Since I bought Bitwig I spend more time on the laptop. I love Bitwig, it beats all iOS DAWs out of the water and its stock synths are great but the desktop synth market doesn’t satisfy me. You either have replicas of classic synths (and the number of replicas per classic synth keeps growing) or the new synths are so complex and deep that they require a learning curve of several months.

I use iPad synths like an external HW synth from Bitwig. I love touch operation when tweaking them! VHS Synth is a great example why I keep coming back to the iPad for synths. Small creative synths that give you some unique sounds and just costs a few bucks. I love it. Instabuy.

What did he do? Was there a mod they could do to the machine to make it run the "correct" way?

Somewhere across the multiverse, Betamax Synth was just released and we’re all playing it with headphones plugged into our iPad Pro’s 3.5mm port.
