Quanta (1) is currently on sale, is v2 imminent?

Not sure if I should pick it up now or wait a couple of days. What are the notable differences between the versions?

They normally do open betas for their apps on iOS, so I guess it isn't imminent as there is no open beta. Just a guess, though.

Thanks, makes sense! Any alternatives you can recommend that can take samples?

I already have UA Silo which I've bought in a bundle a while ago but never really used. I guess I could put it into a Drambo rack with a sampler but not sure if it would be comparable to a package like Quanta, if it needs "access" to the sample itself in a way that can't be achived with separate plugins and a sliced sample.

Maybe have a look at FRMS, Wavecloud, Fluss or Samplewiz 2.

10 cents short from being able to buy Fluss this month 😭 (I use gift cards on a monthly basis to control my app addiction).

Maybe FRMS? I never really used quanta much so I'm not sure what advantages it might have, but FRMS is definitely a decent granular and also allows live processing. Tardigrain is super cool too.

Gonna watch some videos I guess. Thanks again!

Quanta, SpaceCraft and Waldorf Nave are my favorite granular synths today I must say.
Spacecraft can sound super smooth and Quanta has the wider spectrum of sounds, a good set of filters, an additional classic oscillator and noise generator, a great mod matrix, 2 LFOs with nice tunable shapes and 4 very flexible and easy to adjust envelope generators. If I want anything better / more powerful, I'll switch to Serum or Pigments on desktop.

How usable is the Quanta 1 UI on the iPad compared to their newer UI iterations like Replicant 3 or Other Desert Cities that a Quanta 2 would also inherit I guess?

Spacecraft looks interesting as well, both are within my budget right now. Which of of the two would better programmamable/mappable to knobs in Drambo? I guess I could map quanta parameters to Drambos XY pads as well if I want to jam manually.

If the iOS music making community was a Seinfeld character, it would be George. ;-)

But we all know that sometimes it’s Kramer.

Spacecraft 2 has been “about to be released” for the last year or so - beta testers have confirmed it’s a major update but dev has said it will be separate purchase , so…..
    just so you know

Quanta is quite usable on the iPad. I find the controls to be sized sensibly, including the mod matrix.
On an iPad Mini in portrait mode it might be a little too small 😉

Both map well in Drambo, XY pads too so I would rather decide in respect to their features.
If by "jam manually" you mean touching and scrolling around the waveform directly then Spacecraft would be the better choice.
If you want a full-blown granular synth for dedicated sound design then I would grab Quanta.

You should see some of the ridiculous reviews and emails developers get. Some devs are able to shrug it off, some find it dispiriting. For some, it just isn't something they feel like dealing with. And I guess after a while some get jaded.

    ... and this

All to spend just as much effort on a product with a smaller market and less margin than desktop.

I know @Jamie_Mallender has mentioned several times that this forum is known as a dev shredder (my paraphrase, not his original wording) and this is one of the few threads I've clearly seen that, and with atypical players.

You may be paraphrasing me but you’re not far from my wording.

There are frustrations on all sides, but whatever our opinion, there’s always a nice way to express it, never any need to be horrible. And you know what, the vast majority of us are nice and this forum is brilliant. I’ve taken some flak for what I’ve said about this forum, so if I can clarify - I’ve never said that everyone at this forum is the same, quite the contrary- most people here are awesome. But there are a few who have done a lot of damage. People who really like to rip into developers, or YouTubers etc.. basically anyone who’s creating something that might possibly help them. And these people can be very harsh. The point I’ve tried to put across is, that’s ok if it’s someone like me - I’ve been in front of audiences my whole life, it’s my work, my skin is so thick - you’re not going to hurt me. But not everyone is made like that. I know developers and creators who used to use the forum who now will not come here. That’s our loss. Why am I always saying this stuff? Well, I knew a guy who took his own life for reasons that are hard to explain, but it began with cyber bullying. Something that got in his head that he couldn’t shake. Sure, there was something wrong in his head beforehand, but that could be anyone. You don’t know. Be kind. Be honest and forthright but also kind.

Being totally honest and open myself, I have no relationship with Audio Damage at all. When I hadn’t been making iOS videos very long I did message them, explained I was a full time muso in lockdown, zero income, making iOS YouTube videos. Asked if I could please have a couple of codes and I’d demo their apps. They didn’t reply. That’s ok, maybe I went to spam, or they looked at my videos and thought they were shite or I was an annoying hippie with too few subs. Whatever, no hard feelings. I didn’t tweet about it and criticise them either though. I do think that tweet shows some very poor judgement, and no matter how horrible a message you receive, you never share it like that, especially without disguising the persons name. It may feel like they deserve it and I understand the frustration but I think that’s out of order. It would be a shame to see any developer leave iOS behind but you know, there are some bigger developers coming. The apps will be bigger and more powerful, they’ll cost more, we’ll buy less but end up with more professional capabilities. The devices will continue to get better and better - and this platform is still in its infancy. The future is very bright. We are all part of an exciting, fast growing community so as we build it, let’s also try our best to make it a nice place to be.

I agree - well said. Also - I don't expect every app to be perfect. I would love to have updates, if possible, but I'm not going to start hating on the developer. At the worst, it just might make me start leaning towards other developers who do updates more often.

Dubstation2, Enso, EOS2, Other Desert Cities are not perfect apps, but they generally do what I need them to do. Any quirks (so far) haven't been enough to make me want to ditch them. They all are my first-to-open. They sound fantastic. The Dev can rant all he wants, doesn't change my sound design process at all.

Some other Dev apps have glitches that make me not open them again, however.

I got Quanta now and have been playing with it for an hour, like it a lot so far. Thanks for the help!

  • Love Quanta and have rarely had any issues with any of Audio Damage apps. Some of them are among my all-time favorite apps.

  • FRMS should not be excluded talking granular, it's excellent.

  • A long time ago, Quanta and Continua were the reasons I loved AudioDamage in the first place. When I heard news that Quanta2 would not be available on my main platform, I was utterly disappointed. I respect their decision, nothing actually changed, and everything from AD still rocks. But in the meantime, I acquired every single granular synth you can get for iOS, learned new things, the workflow has changed, and sadly, Quanta is going to fade away. The possible upcoming deprecation is not helping at all. But hope for Quanta2 on iOS will never die! 😌

  • Well, i hope Audio Damage continue to develop for iOS. They have a lot of beautiful sounding things 🙏🏽

TBH though, i was excited about Quanta 2 coming to iOS until WaveCloud came out. Now I'm not upset this is staying desktop only 🤷🏽‍♂️
