@NeuM "Can't wait til you start posting some videos with your new patches. ;)"

A thought crossed my mind today about possibly starting a new thread here dedicated to Nambu and the different ways I'm discovering of using it. I would post a patch each time with a description underneath of what is going on in it. People could then install the patch for some reverse engineering and studying if they were at all interested in the workings and possibilities of Nambu. Maybe give others some ideas for programming it themselves, you know?
I wanted to show how it is so much more than just an FM synth. It is in fact a very hybrid synth of FM, Subtractive and with all those extra texture sound sources and a resonator too! All of those elements can be combined and mixed in different ways in the Op Matrix to go much further than just FM. It's so good with hybrid sound potential, it came at just the right time and completely cured my recent rising GAS for chasing down a Roland D50. LOL.

But then, if I created that kind of thread, you'd all already have my patches collected individually over time, and there wouldn't be any point in me releasing a bank of them! 😆

Any route you choose is cool with me. If you do post patches, please make sure you include your famous Spider icon in the description so they're easy to find. ;) I've never been crazy about the patch organization of this developer's apps. As far as I know there is no way to move patches. You have to duplicate a patch and then save it in a new location.

Ah. You can move patches around to different folders in all the Icegear synths, it's a few steps and not immediately obvious though. You have to highlight/select the patch first and then select the strange line icon at the end of the options in the presets window. Then select the icon with two files overlapping which copies the patch to an invisible pasteboard, so to speak. Then go to another folder you want to paste in and select the icon with two files overlapping with a + on it. That worked for me. It doesn't really move the patch though, it creates a copy for pasting and leaves the original where it was too. I just tested that function again, it worked that way first time but then locked up when I tried moving another one. Same behaviour with the other Icegear synths I just tested it on. But you can unfreeze it by selecting the curved/looped arrow and then it will open the folder again that you are trying to move to, and it still remembers the last patch you copied for pasting.

Anyhoo, it's a bit of a fiddle around, but definitely possible to 'move' (it's really copy/paste) patches between folders the same way in all Icegear synths. I'm just not 100% sure I'm doing it completely correctly, or could be a bug. But yeah as you say, it is duplicating rather than moving.

I've never done it that way. I've just always loaded the preset, then navigated to the folder I want to save it in, and saved it there. Never did suss out what that odd line icon is. Thanks for clearing that up.

Of course then you have to navigate back to the original folder to clean up the old file. (Or probably you can do it before re-saving the patch. I've never wanted to take the chance of losing the original until I know it's saved where I want it.)

  • Here is a short video I made to illustrate the kind of sounds Nambu excels at : plucked strings, flutes…

Of course, I am sure Nambu can produce other kind of sounds. But I first started exploring textures and resonators and this is where ended up !

  • And the corresponding presets to load in Nambu, for those interested.

The plucks are very nice but that flute! Wow

Outstanding! You should see about getting these added as standards in the app by the developer. Very solid. I'll bet given the time you'd be able to craft a very convincing Saxophone patch.

  • I have so many synths that I rarely touch — and just a small handful that are goto synths on nearly every project (Namely, Zeeon, Synthmaster 2 and various Moogs) … I think I finally found a new “goto” synth — especially for pitched percussion and plucked sounds, which Nambu dazzles at.

I’m nearly useless at sound design with FM synths, but Nambu is surprisingly easy to get a vast array of useful sounds with just a few small tweaks. Love it!

I’m certainly a lot less inclined to spend bookoo bucks on HW like Syntakt when I have powerful apps like this Drambo at my fingertips.

    Yeah!
Darn it, I can't remember who it was on here a while ago asking for any good synthesized flute sounds. I hope they come across this thread and @Paulo164 's demonstrations here. Best flute sounds I've heard from an iOS synth! 😲😃

  • Yes! They sound awesome.
Can’t seem to load the presets though(?) How’s everyone doing it?

Unzip folder. Click icon of preset. It will open in standalone. Go to patch browser>user. Repeat for the other two patches. They may not show up immediately and you’ll haveto go back to the main browser page then select “user” again. They’ll be there waiting when you do.

  • Thank you every one ! 😊
Yeah, I will try to explore more in that direction and try to collect some very few but top sounding and expressive presets.

  • Cool. Got them, thanks @oat_phipps

  • I believe this synth is named after the developer's favorite physicists, but in the course of searching for more Nambu videos on YouTube, I learned Nambu is also the name of a style of WWII Japanese pistol. Who knew?

  • Is it possible to make a glockenspiel like sound with Nambu? Not sure where to start. I guess why start with a sine wave with a short attack and a long decay, but not sure about the rest.

How are the glockenspiel sounds in Decent Sampler? Better than Beathawk?

I'd do a web search for recipes for creating bell sounds and glockenspiels with an FM synth.

  • I’m just playing around with one of the existing presets, key 003 I think it’s called. I like the changes I’ve made and want to save this as a preset, but when I click on the presets box at the top, the usual option to add a new one is greyed out (?) Please advise!

  • When i made my vid on Nambu, saving user presets was one of the first things I covered. Hope it will help:

  • Just watched. Crystal clear, thanks man

Sweet - it's still not the best preset system. Why do so many devs have trouble making a f**king decent preset system? 😂

One of the best preset systems I ever came across in an iOS synth was on Mitosynth. And that synth dates back to something like 2014! It allowed you to create and name your own custom tags for applying to presets for grouping and filter-searching them. So good!

New update for Nambu. @Spidericemidas is going to like these new improvements!

Change out of the Factory folder to another one, such as the user folder, and the option will be enabled.
[edit] oops. I see that was already answered by @Gavinski's video.
