The term “soundscape” really bothers me.

I usually call my music “stuff”. Sometimes I think of it as improvised stuff. All the subs fit into that bag of stuff.

I’m not saying others should think that way, though I often think of the music of others as “their stuff”.

I’m very much pro stuff I use it all the time too.

Words are the problem. Like lawnmowers, there should simply be an icon of a throttle with a tortoise on the slow side and a hare on the fast side to indicate tempo.
The same animals will have different emojis dressed according to genre. The fashion statement of the emoji would allow the music to show how dated it is, allowing it to be more easily distinguishable, especially if the song is lumped under a broad genre that has spanned decades.

There’s always been a hip hop element to that tortoise’s trousers.

Would you call a painter using the term "landscape" as pompous and lazy? There's nothing wrong with a word that's been used for decades to describe a type of Ambient.

EDIT: I use the term "soundscape" loosely to describe the more "atmospheric" and "atonal" sfx-type Ambient I produce whereas I use the term "melodic" to describe the more tonal Ambient I produce.

And that's all fine, mate - but for the verb "produce"!!! 😁 That one I can't even. I mean, why can't we just go forth and make music like normal people do?

I'm about to start hyperventillating here, so I'll go and produce a cup of tea to calm down.

  • "Soundscape" = "sonic landscape". I have zero problems with this and think it's a fair characterization of some pieces.... namely ones that eschew traditional song structure and instead adopt a more painterly approach and construction (think ones composed of field recordings, found sounds, and non-traditional instrumentation). Some pieces are "music" and some are "'scapes". :) (note: I favor the latter!)

Yeah, 'I'm a music producer' would definitely be a flex too far for most of us here lol.

Hahahaha, those are funny clips. I think the problem is that the word ambient is a hard one to use without getting the ambient purists angry if you're doing something that is not backgroundy enough. I personally have no issues with the use of the word soundscape, or with very loose uses of the word ambient.

I have a problem with following the word ‘ambient’ with the word ‘music’…

    ….just kidding!

  • Great thing about making (or producing as @ervin likes to call it) soundscapes, ambient, droning or anything with the word “texture” is that you can proudly get away with or avoid failure 🙃
If you’re doing pop, rock, indie, dance or your general styles that “people are supposed to like” you feel miserable with your 3 Facebook likes and 4 comments on this godly forum. Now, if you’re doing ambient, abstract or glitchy 7x13 soundscapes it’s OK cos the ‘public” won’t understand. In this sense I envy the soundscapers, it’s liberating. Also you’re deliberately and obviously putting yourself in a different category, where you’re not even close to all the reggeaton (can’t even spell it and I don’t care) and current crap.

Chalk up another one for “stuff”. I find it hard to call my stuff “songs”, as there’s usually no singing involved, I’ve occasionally used “pieces” while curling up inside as it feels pretentious.

*Edited to make it clear that the next bit isn’t aimed at @LinearLineman *

In a similar vein, on calling myself a musician: depends on whose definition is being used. I would call myself a musician, and call my stuff music. YMMV.

  • Perhaps ambient is meant (intention of the creator) to be more of a background sonic experience where as soundscape doesn’t necessarily care about being in or out of your face. Regardless of interpretation, then it would really come down to the creator. Can anyone comment on that statement please? And correct me? Thanks!

  • Also: “Do music” & “Workflow”. Aargh.

Guilty! Back when MySpace was around, whenever I “released” something, I was the self-proclaimed “writer, producer, mixing and mastering engineer.” 😎😂
