Those apps were absolutely unprecedented on iOS.

Agreed! I haven't had an AUM session that didn't feature an Unfiltered app since the first beta came out!

  • Time streching in AudioLayer.

    • Larger iPads
    • Organic sample instruments
    • Getting apps outside the App Store
    • Improvements for iPadOS
    • Creativity

But if only Logic comes to iPad I’ll also be happy

I also think iOS as a viable music production OS needs some big name artists to champion it, we’ve had Damon Albarn, Flying Lotus and also ahem Jordan Rudess, but I can’t think of any others.

    What did Damon Albarn do?

Gorillaz stuff featuring iPad apps, if I’m not mistaken. Though that could be any of the members - I wouldn’t know which one. :p

As for my hopes for 2023: Pianoteq. And whatever other world-changing apps happen to appear, assuming I have a use for them.

    Atom 2 ‚Automation Update’

Logic for iPad will be here before the next Atom update...

I’d rather it was Bitwig (although I also always mentioned here I’d like to see Logic come to the iPad - I don’t really care which one as long as it’s a DAW with features on par with it’s desktop counterpart)

But - I’d love to see midi timeline/automation for AUM as well in some form but one that makes sense and is ergonomic to use from the user’s perspective and one that has a handful of editing tools (hopefully something similar to FL Studios pianoroll and tools/quality of life features that you can find there) Also an audio clip timeline…

  • More reverbs and compressors :-)
Seriously, iOS feels great already with synths, samplers, effects, and a good choice of workflows.
It's going to take me most of 2023 just to explore what I've scooped up in 2022.

But I think I'm most excited about the possibilities for generative music.
Already some good foundations here and looking forward to what's next for things like Piano Motifs or Riffler.

  • Hoping for more competition in the arena for modeled instruments. This is the way.

Confirmed a couple of years ago as well. Hoping for a 2023 drop. :)

That's the year they think the beta will come out. They will release the iOS version after they release an upcoming plugin.

It would be nice to hear from @blueveek I agree. Am thankful though, for what we have in Atom 2 already. It’s been perfect for what I use it for.

    What did Damon Albarn do?

He did a whole gorillaz album on his iPad.

  • I would like the 3,5 jack back or low latency bluetooth audio.
Do i beleve that it is going to happen? No

Apart from that i wish for better self diciplin to finish tracks and practice my piano/keyboard playing skills….. but that is on me 😜

  • An exact copy of Simpler from Ableton Live.

  • I would like to see more desktop devs coming to iOS but doing it properly, like Unfiltered Audio are doing. I'd like to see more open betas. Some devs need to get a bit more marketing savvy. I want to see more devs properly taking advantage of the touch screen and, in general, doing better UIs than some of them do. Also more iOS devs making their stuff available for M1 Macs - these are things that will make iOS music thrive. We need to convert more desktop users to iOS users.

Would like to see more devs making their own spoken YouTube tutorials available at or before release. More sponsoring of youtubers by devs if they have the means to do it. More viewers donating to youtubers they like to help support the iOS youtubers - Doug's plea for help a month or so ago showed how necessary that can be and also how deserved it is.

Proper manuals, ideally available in-app, which remember the position the reader left off at and which are easily exportable to iBooks.

More devs adding tip jars. More devs reaching out to the sound design community and getting them to do IAP preset packs.

Devs, stop burying essential features like key and scale in the settings menu.

Apps that resize well - like FAC Medusa or Bandit, for example.

I really want more mpe instruments, with mpe properly implemented and more mpe presets among the factory presets.

In terms of synths, I'd love an mpe physical modeling synths of the calibre of something like Plasmonic.

  • I hope Logic Pro DOES NOT make it to iOS. I hope things pretty much the way they are.
Would I love and do we need a pro DAW?. Sure!. But I’m afraid the iOS music ecosystem is too fragile. Prices are very reasonable, sales are not too big as this is a niche market. The amazing indie devs we all love hardly make a living. The irruption of Logic would be too much of a stress test. And I wouldn’t trade Logic for what we have now. So my hope is that this fragile market survives.

Madlib stated that he has been making beats on iPad, especially Bandana album.

@tahiche great post, I fully agree. What makes the iOS niche interesting are the creative indie apps, the modular approaches, for instance with AUM, touch operated instruments. After two years being iPad only I personally gave up on an iOS DAW, settled with Bitwig and I don’t regret it. It’s more like that I’m relieved from the constant frustration that also blocked my creativity.

I also wish that Drambo evolves. It’s already the best groovebox on the planet. It would be great if Drambo would have a deep and powerful controller integration API like Bitwig has. An API that allows bi-directional communication. I‘m sure the iOS community would pick that up. The controller scripts from the Bitwig community are truly amazing and some are very creative. For instance the script of Ritchie Hawtin that turns the inexpensive Akai Fire and Bitwig’s drum rack into a device that resembles a hardware drum machine.

My dream is that Drambo would export to Bitwig and that Drambo devices would be translated to Bitwig‘s Grid. The best modular groovebox paired with the best modular DAW - a match in heaven. Okay, Bitwig fanboi out. 🙄

  • I'm hoping for more "tactile" instruments that make sense on touch screen and take advantages of it, such as
    Ondes Martenot
    Buchla stuff
    Turntable for scratching
And more odd unique but well thought out instruments, simple, focused, with proper UI and connectivity.
I don't think direct porting of big desktop VSTs is a way.

  • Regarding AUM future evolution, Jonatan Liljedahl wrote me the following:

"I'm planning to add a way to tag AU's and apps, so that one can browse by tags. Tags would be user defined and could be "Favs!" or "D&B" or "Death Jazz" etc :)"

This is what I expect the most in 2023

    Goddam yes!!!!!

Man, reading you I’m tempted by Bitwig…but it’d have to be mouse-less. My company laptop is a MS Surface with touch screen, if they would just let me install it. Highly unlikely.

IMO modular is definitely the way to go on iOS. AUM is indeed the star in this department.
This modular approach could also mitigate the DAW situation. Problem with a niche market is that big developments don’t have a clear monetary return. Look at Auria, NS2… massive efforts that stall, struggle or even die because the iOS music market is what it is…
So what makes sense is to split these efforts. There’s no proper audio editing in any iOS DAW, right?. Implement proper app integration, seamless drag and drop and let a dev work on that specific solution. For example 4Pockets audio editor is way more powerful than any daw audio editor. But without drag and drop or easy daw integration every workflow is overly complicated, boring, inefficient and frustrating. It’d maybe make financial sense for a dev to work on say good audio transient editing as an auv3 and sell 1000 units, whereas Steinberg would have no financial incentive to put that effort into Cubasis… team work!.

    Turntable for scratching

This has been available for a long time now. The Mixfader also added a Bluetooth physical crossfader into the mix. YMMV but it's very much possible to scratch with it on some levels

    • The new 4-Operator FM synth by DesignByPaul
    • RYM2612 (Inphonik confirmed it with me)
    • A 90s-style virtual analog synth similar to the MicroQ, Nova, AN1X, and/or Virus
    • BLEASS modular or additive synth
    • MicroKorg or something else from Korg
    • A fun new additive synth
    • A frequency-shifting plugin like Echobode (I am aware there is BLEASS Delay)
    • Something like Reason or Bitwig for iOS
    • Implementation of CLAP plugin format
    • Waldorf Nave 10th anniversary AUv3 reboot
    • An AUv3 Amiga-style tracker sequencer
    • Logic Pro for M1 and M2 iPads

Other frequency shifters on iOS= frevkens and Bandshift

I didn't expect we'd get 3 excellent tape delay emulations, didn't foresee the likes of Scaler and Unfiltered Audio bringing their apps to iOS and had no clue that Riffler was even possible. 2022 has been a damn good year on that front!

My hopes for next year? An iOS Buchla Easel, RNBO allowing people to convert MaxForLive devices into AUv3s and Madrona, Madrona, Madrona!

There’s a Buchla emulation in Audulus 4 beta

  • Very interesting indeed!

LogicPro for iPad! There I've said it...

And well Gadgets and Korg apps as AUv3's including the KORG Collection 4 and WaveState and OPSix...
...but I would also not be too surprised by 'Roland Cloud for iOS AUV3s'.
(They may even use ZenBeats as a container to host the AUv3's that can be used in with other apps).

But all in all it would be nice with some BIG surprises when it comes to complete DAWs.
I'm happy I've got Logic on the desktop but wouldn't mind being able to run it on my iPad when I'm on the go.

Will this happen? I don't think so...

@Sabu : “Roland Cloud for iOS using Zenbeats for a container.” From your mouth to @MatthewAtZenbeats ears, lol.
